Beware of scam messages with Powerball winners’ names

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Wisconsin issued a warning about messages purporting to be from a Powerball jackpot winner. Back in April 2019, Manuel Franco of West Allis, WI, claimed a $768 million jackpot.

Apparently, the BBB showed an uptick in activity using Franco’s name to phish out personal information. Recipients allegedly have been selected to receive money from Franco.

Accordingly, Franco did give out Target gift cards to random shoppers because he worked at the retailer prior to his big win. Therefore, a few people did fall prey to the phishing scam.

Overall, be mindful and protect yourself from lottery scams:

  • Be suspicious of new texts, emails or phone calls.
  • Do not provide personal information or money in exchange for the promise of a lottery prize.
  • Report scams to BBB Scam Tracker.

PA online lottery winners receive automatic alerts

There is a better way to ensure that your lottery winnings are paid out, even automatically. Here in Pennsylvania, you can buy lottery tickets through the PA online lottery. Typically, most wins are paid out directly into your player account. However, for larger amounts, you will have to head into one of the PA Lottery’s offices.

Even if you are not located in Pennsylvania, there are other states that allow online lottery sales:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Please play responsibly.
