Brief Flyers History
The Philadelphia Flyers have been in the NHL since 1967 and were the first expansion team in the post-Original Six era to win the Stanley Cup (1973–74).
The Flyers have played home games in an arena on Broad Street since the beginning. It was the Spectrum from 1967 until 1996, and then Wells Fargo Center. The team’s Broad Street Bullies nickname was born out of a team reputation for toughness and the address.
The Flyers won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1973–74 and 1974–75, but those remain the franchise’s only championships. Those teams were led by Bobby Clarke, who played his entire 15-year career with Philadelphia. Clarke is a three-time Hart Trophy winner and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee. He also won the Frank J. Selke Trophy one time.
Clarke helped the team return to competitiveness in the 1990s as general manager. Eric Lindros won a Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP in the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season for a Flyers team under Clarke’s management.
The Flyers were competitive again in the late 2000s and have won, all told, eight conference championships and 16 division championships.
