How To Bet on Penguins Games in Pennsylvania

Betting on the NHL in Pennsylvania has never been easier since the state legalized sports betting. Gone are the days of asking friends in other states to place bets for you or using an overseas website or an illegal bookie.

Now, it can all be done from your phone on your couch legally, simply, and securely. here are the typical steps to sign up for an online sportsbook.

  1. Locate a bonus or signup promotion offer on this page. Look for one that appeals to your needs. You can use multiple sportsbooks to broaden your scope.
  2. Register an account with your selected sportsbook. You’ll probably need to select a username and password and provide some information such as your birthday. If you are required to verify your identity, that can be done at this point too.
  3. Download the app from the sportsbook. Both iPhone and Android users will find separate download buttons directly on the sportsbook landing page.
  4. Once you’ve downloaded the app, log in with your account, and claim your promotional offer or bonus bets.
  5. Fund your account. Use the available deposit methods to add money to your sportsbook account.
  6. Bet! Check your various payouts depending on your bet amount before confirming your bet.

Penguins Betting Lines Explained

Below is an example of typical betting lines set before a hockey game that you might find at Pennsylvania sportsbooks, such as the PointsBet betting site:

TeamMoneylinePuck-lineTotal
Pittsburgh-150-1.5 (+140)Over 5.5 (-125)
NY Rangers+150+1.5 (+140)Under 5.5 (-105)
  • Moneyline: Moneyline betting is simply betting on which team you think will win the game.  A -150 favorite requires a $150 bet to win a profit of $100. A +130 underdog would net a profit of $130 on a $100 bet.
  • Puck line: Puck line betting is the equivalent of spread betting for other sports. In sports like football and basketball, the spread will vary based on the talent discrepancy between the two teams. However in hockey, due to the low-scoring nature of the sport, the puck-line is almost always 1.5. Betting on the favorite to cover the puck-line is almost always a plus-money proposition.
  • Total: For a totals bet, you wager on the number of goals both teams combine to score in the game. This includes overtime goals. If the game goes to a shootout, one goal will be added to the winning team’s final tally but individual shootout goals do not count. Most totals in hockey are between 5 goals and 6.5 goals.

Penguins Vegas Odds vs. Online Odds

The lines found on online sportsbooks are not that different compared to the lines found in Vegas. Both online sportsbooks and Vegas use similar computer models to figure out their lines. These models use the same data and have the same information, meaning the results will be similar.

If a sportsbook develops a significant liability on one side of a game, they may move the line to try to attract action on the other side. This is a concern if everyone in Pennsylvania is betting on the hometown Penguins. The line in Pennsylvania may move, but the line in Vegas wouldn’t change much.

Penguins Live Betting

Live betting means betting on a game after it has already started. If you’re getting home from work late and you missed your opportunity to make a bet before the puck drops, it’s no big deal. You can live bet the game, and depending on what’s happened up to that point, you might get even better odds.

Live betting adjusts the lines based on what has already happened in the game. If there have been no goals in the first ten minutes of the game, the pregame total of 5.5 goals might now drop to 4.5. If the favored team has a 1-0 lead early, the live puck line might now be 2.5 instead of 1.5 goals.

With all of the sportsbook apps, live betting is easier than ever. You can place your bet while on the move from anywhere in the state. Odds adjust in real-time so you’re never out of the loop.

Penguins Prop Betting

If you’re not sure how the game will go, you can still get in on the action with a prop bet. A prop bet is a bet on whether something will occur within the game. Some examples of prop bets in hockey include:

  • Team to score first: This is a self-explanatory bet. Do you expect the Penguins to come out flying in a big game and get the first goal? You can bet on Pittsburgh to score first and cash your bet early if you’re right.
  • Player Over/Under points: Sidney Crosby has had a lot of big games in his career. You might think Sid the Kid has another monster game up his sleeve, and therefore you’d look toward betting over on his points scored. Some lesser players’ point total over/unders might be 0.5 points (basically a yes/no on whether they’ll score a goal or record an assist), but with a player of the caliber of Crosby, a typical over/under would be set at 1.5 points.
  • Who will win the second period?: Maybe you missed the opening period due to being stuck at work late and then during the third period, you have to pick your kid up from practice. You’ll only be able to watch the second period. No worries. You can bet on which team you think will win the second period. Whatever happens in the first or third period is irrelevant for your bet.

Best Penguins Betting App

Rivers Casino Pittsburgh and owner Rush Street’s online gaming arm BetRivers are the official casino and official sportsbook of the Pittsburgh Penguins. That means BetRivers is likely the best place to bet the Penguins online.

Plus, BetRivers takes credit cards and deposits via PayNearMe and the cage at Rivers Casino Pittsburgh, making it super convenient. Finally, BetRivers will give you a great first deposit match bonus when you sign up using our exclusive bonus code. That’s money you can use to bet on the Pens, plus it comes with only a one-time wagering requirement attached, making it an easy bonus to get your hands on.

Penguins Schedule 2022-23

The NHL plays an 82 game season where every team plays every team at least twice.

The Penguins will play in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division in 2022-23, and their 82 games will consist of 26 games against divisional rivals, 24 games against non-division conference teams, and 32 games vs. non-conference teams.

The Penguins have had heated rivalries and playoff series with many of the Metropolitan Division teams over the past decade, so every game should be intense. The Penguins season runs from mid-October to mid-April.

At the end of the season, the top three teams in the division will make the playoffs, with up to two others claiming wild card spots. The playoffs begin a few days after the end of the regular season.

Brief Penguins History

Mario Lemieux might be known as one of the best hockey players to ever play, but he’s also the current owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The former superstar of the team originally bought into team ownership in 1999 with Ronald Burkle.

At the beginning of Lemieux’s ownership, there was concern about the long-term prospects of the Penguins and how long the organization could survive in Pittsburgh. Thankfully, the team drafted some kids named Crosby and Malkin, started winning a lot of hockey games, and got a new arena built in 2008.

Pittsburgh has won five Stanley Cups in their history, and they’ve come in two distinct eras. The 1991 and 1992 champion Penguins were led by the aforementioned Mario Lemieux. Lemieux is considered by some the second greatest hockey player to ever play the game behind only the great Wayne Gretzky. The Penguins of the early 1990s also featured players like Jaromir Jagr, Mark Recchi, Kevin Stevens, Paul Coffey, Ron Francis, Bryan Trottier, and other legends of the game. Tom Barrasso was the team’s goalie and he helped backstop the team to back-to-back championships.

The Penguins also won the Stanley Cup in 2009, 2016, and 2017. These three championships fall under the Sidney Crosby era. Crosby is considered to be one of the greatest players in the current generation. Crosby has been joined by names like Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Kris Letang, Phil Kessel, and others to help win three rings in 8 years.

Here are some of the all-time leaders for the Penguins in some major statistics:

  • Games Played: Sidney Crosby (1,190)
  • Goals: Mario Lemieux (690)
  • Assists: Mario Lemieux (1033)
  • Points: Mario Lemieux (1723)
  • Wins: Marc-Andre Fleury (375)
  • Saves: Marc-Andre Fleury (17,774)

Best Moment in Penguins History

Worst Moment in Recent Penguins History
