Injuries are a fact of life in the NFL. They impact teams and sports betting lines.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles both suffered defeats and injuries during Week 2.

The biggest blow was dealt to the Steelers. They lost quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for the season and are 0-2. Mason Rudolph now steps into the starting role.

Pittsburgh Steelers  vs. San Francisco 49ers preview

It’s only Week 3 but the Steelers are entering gut-check time. They got wrecked by the Patriots 33-3 in Week 1. They gave up 21 second-half points at home and lost 28-26 to the Seahawks.

To add injury to insulting losses, Roethlisberger will miss the rest of the season and running back James Conner is “day-to-day” with a knee issue. Now, they get to travel cross-country to San Francisco. Pittsburgh hasn’t beaten the 49ers on the road since 1999.

The 49ers appear to be one of the league’s most improved teams. Both of their wins came on the road. Their Week 1 victory was fueled by defense and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tossed three touchdowns to key their Week 2 win against the Bengals. Matt Breida ran for 121 yards and San Francisco rattled off a number of big plays to put together 572 yards of total offense.

The Steelers are 6.5-point underdogs. At first, seeing that +6.5 attached to Steelers causes a double-take. But their disastrous start and uncertainty about Rudolph puts them at that number.

Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles preview

The Eagles were without offensive weapons Alshon Jeffrey, DeSean Jackson, and Dallas Goeddert for most of their Week 2 matchup against Atlanta. Even after taking a brutal hit to the ribs early in the game, Carson Wentz nearly led the Eagles to a win on the road but the fell to the Falcons 24 – 20. Tim Jernigan suffered a foot injury, further depleting the defensive line.

During Week 2, the Lions relied on a well-balanced offensive attack – even with Matthew Stafford’s two interceptions. Their defense held the visiting Chargers in check and the Lions pulled out at 13-10 win.

In Atlanta, wide receivers Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley burned the Eagles for a combined 211 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Will Detroit’s playmakers Kenny Golladay and Marvin Jones have the same success?

The Eagles open as 7-point favorites at home. As the status for injured Eagles unfolds, the line might shrink.

Keep an eye on the under (47) for this game. The under is 4-1 in the Eagles last 5 games and 8-1 in the Lions last 9 games. The Eagles are most likely contributing to the “under” by slow starts. They have been held scoreless in the opening quarter of 12 of their last 18 regular-season games.
