Phillies Odds

Snow has blanketed parts of Pennsylvania and it’s been a frigid winter so far for the Commonwealth. And it’s not just limited to the weather outside.

The Philadelphia Eagles relationship with their franchise quarterback turned bitter causing a divorce. Joel Embiid is having an MVP season…when he isn’t taking time off to ice his sore back. And the Flyers‘ season was literally put on ice for 11 days as they dealt with a COVID outbreak.

Let’s think warm thoughts. Perhaps nothing invokes feelings of sunshine than Spring Training and the start of the 2021 MLB season.

Here is a breakdown for everything you can wager on right now when it comes to MLB betting.

“Giant” underdogs and no-value favorites

At William Hill online sportsbook, the defending World Series champion Dodgers opened at +450 to repeat and are now down to +200.

Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill, commented:

“It’s very rare for a baseball team to be that low before the season. The thing about baseball is that things can crumble fast—one injury, one bad stretch, another team gets hot. The Dodgers have all the pieces, but the Padres have plenty of talent too. At +200, there’s no value in it, you might as well wait for the playoffs if you think they’re going to repeat. That way you avoid catastrophic things happening in the regular season and you’ll get around the same price anyway.”

The NL West has garnered the majority early money for 2021 World Series winner. The Dodgers are first with 21% of the total dollars wagered and the Padres rank second at 15%. For total number of tickets, Los Angeles and San Diego have each racked up 10%, the most of any team.

In the early goings, the biggest World Series futures wagers at William Hill are on the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals.

A New Jersey bettor placed $5,000 on Mets (25/1) for a total potential payout of $130,000. An Iowa bettor laid $5,000 on Cardinals (25/1) also for a total potential payout of $130,000. The Mets have attracted the third-most total dollars wagered at 13%.

One current long shot has been receiving noteworthy action at William Hill. The San Francisco Giants are currently listed at (200/1) and have collected 4% of the total number of tickets and 2% of the total dollars wagered.

Sports Betting Partnerships

Every Spring Training is filled with old faces and new faces and it’s no different when it comes to teams and their partnerships.

The Philadelphia Phillies extended their radio deal with Entercom, which owns WIP-FM 94.1 FM and broadcasts Phillies games.

Jeff Blumenthal of the Philadelphia Business Journal first reported the extension. Another notable change mentioned in the PBJ exclusive is an increased role for DraftKings.

“DraftKings will be presenting sponsor for the pre-game show and have a two-minute segment dedicated toward sports betting analysis of that night’s game and others around Major League Baseball.”

Phillies radio

The Phillies radio broadcasts have aired on CBS Radio Philadelphia stations since 2004 and have aired on 94WIP for the past five seasons. Scott Franzke and Larry Andersen, and Kevin Fransden will continue to call the games on 94WIP.

The Phillies and CBS Radio signed a three-year broadcast deal at the end of the 2016 season. Entercom purchased CBS Radio in Nov. 2017.

Entercom and sports betting

Since the fall of 2020, Entercom has made big moves to establish its presence in the sports betting industry.

Oct. 2020: Entercom and FanDuel announce a six-year partnership which makes FanDuel the official sportsbook partner across its sports broadcast stations and Radio.com. It’s touted in a press release as a pairing that “brings together America’s #1 Sportsbook with the #1 sports audio company in the United States.”

Said Matthew King, FanDuel’s Chief Executive Officer:

“In the two years we have been doing business with Entercom, it is abundantly clear to us that their authentic connection to sports fans is one of the best ways for us to engage FanDuel customers. We will work together to offer sports fans access to information wherever, whenever, and however they consume content, providing them with the tools to learn and win.”

David Field, President and Chief Executive Officer at Entercom commented:

“We believe this is the largest advertising commitment ever made within the radio industry. We are focused on delivering the best sports betting experience for our audiences in markets where legalized sports betting will be pervasive.”

More Entercom sports betting deals

Nov. 2020: Philadelphia-based Entercom acquired QL Gaming Group, a sports iGaming affiliate platform. It was an all cash deal for approximately $32 million. The acquisition brings data, analytics and insight-driven content to Entercom’s sports broadcast stations, podcasts and Radio.com.

Jan. 2021: Entercom launched the “BetQL Audio Network” which will be home to sports betting programming that can be heard across Entercom’s stations. Network headliners included “You Better You Bet” with Nick Kostos and Ken Barkley and “BetQL Daily” with Joe Ostrowski and Ross Tucker.

Feb. 2021: Entercom announced a content agreement with Locked On Podcast Network, which was recently acquired by TEGNA, Inc. Locked On’s roster of pro and college sports podcasts now airs on Radio.com.

Feb. 2021: Founder and CEO of QL Gaming Group Justin Park pens “Sports Betting and The Future of Audio” at Entercom.com. It reads in part:

“The global COVID-19 pandemic has driven up digital gaming and gambling interest, accelerating ten years of change into a matter of months. Legalized betting will dramatically alter the landscape for fans, entertainment providers, and any brand invested or even interested in sports enthusiasts. Through partnerships with BetQL and mobile betting operators, Entercom is the initial audio-first company to recognize and seize this moment.”

Live! Casino and the Phillies

The Phillies’ new neighbor, Live! Casino Philadelphia will join the list of team sponsors this year.

According to representatives for Live! Casino Philadelphia, the partnership with the Phillies includes:

  • Field signage
  • Phillies Radio Ads
  • Digital and Social Media Inclusion
  • Season Tickets
  • Suites
  • Merchandise
  • VIP Hospitality Experiences
  • Commemorative Live Rewards Card

During Live! Casino Philadelphia’s soft-launch and grand opening, people signing up for a Live! Rewards Cards were given the option to choose a Philadelphia Phillies Commemorative Card.

Located about two Bryce Harper home runs away, Live! Casino Philadelphia features a state-of-the-art FanDuel Sportsbook with a 52′ media wall display, 24 TVs, betting kiosks and betting windows.

Are fans allowed at Phillies games?

The Phillies open their 2021 season on April 1 at home against the Atlanta Braves.

Will fans be allowed at the Home Opener or at any games at Citizens Bank Park this season?

On Tuesday afternoon, Philadelphia Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said:

“I can’t guarantee anything, but I can say that it’s likely that there would be some fans in the stands at the Phillies home opener. How many is going to depend not just on us, but also what the state decides.”

Last week, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Sixers also requested to have limited fans in attendance. The Phillies requested limited capacity, also.

Dr. Farley noted that the requests need approval from the State of Pennsylvania since the city of Philadelphia cannot be less restrictive.

Philadelphia Phillies 2021 odds

The Philadelphia Phillies have not made the playoffs or finished above .500 since 2011. The Phils missed the expanded eight team postseason during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season largely due to a historically awful bullpen.

Pennsylvania online sportsbooks put the Phillies over/under win total for 2021 at 80.5.

Philadelphia Phillies futures markets at DraftKings:

  • World Series: +4000
  • National League winner: +2000
  • NL East: +875
  • To make playoffs: Yes (+285)/No (-385)

Phillies Win Total

The Philadelphia Phillies and the rest of the MLB return to a 162-game schedule after a pandemic shortened season.

The Fightin’ Phils face a tough test in 2021.

  • They are in the NL East which is being touted as the toughest division in MLB.
  • The Phillies haven’t made the postseason in nine seasons, the longest drought of any NL team.
  • 2011 was the last time the Phils finished above .500, marking a long stretch of mediocrity.
  • Did the Phillies revamp a historically bad bullpen? Last year, Phillies relievers’  combined ERA was 7.06, dead last in the MLB. And second worst in the MLB history.

The Phillies will once again rely on big contract stars Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto. Aaron Nola gets his fourth straight Opening Day start and Zach Wheeler showed last year he’s a solid No. 2 starter.

The Phillies offense has the ammo to be explosive, but the big questions about the team revolve around starting pitching depth and of course, improving the woeful bullpen.

Sports betting apps in Pennsylvania expect more of the same from the Phillies as their win total is set at 80.5 and odds to win the World Series at +4000. (As always, shop around, see varying odds below.)

Before Opening Day on April 1, let’s go around the horn at PA online sportsbooks and take a look the Phillies odds, team betting markets, and player betting markets.

Phillies Bettors

Spring brings optimism. Flowers in bloom. Longer days. The return of some fans to MLB stadiums.

However, in Philadelphia, it’s harder for optimism to blossom than it is to see tulips sprout from the plethora of potholes.

The start of the 2021 MLB season and a Philadelphia Phillies lineup led by Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto should help shake the winter doldrums. But, just like April showers, the naysayers swoop in and point out that the NL East is stacked and the New York Mets made the big money moves during the offseason.

The first lesson in baseball is “keep your eye on the ball.” In sports betting, a great lesson is keep your eye on the money.

Just because the Phillies aren’t attracting the headlines or World Series futures handle, doesn’t mean backers think this season will be a dud. Early futures money reveals bettors think the Phillies will win more than 80.5 games and make the playoffs. The Phils haven’t finished above .500 or made the playoffs since 2011.

Optimism seems to be in full bloom for Philadelphia Phillies bettors.

2021 World Series Betting Splits from DraftKings

DraftKings 2021 World Series Futures betting handle as of March 30:

  • 20%: Chicago White Sox (+850)
  • 15%: New York Mets (+1000)
  • 15%: New York Yankees (+550)
  • 13%: Los Angeles Dodgers (+350)
  • 10%: San Diego Padres (+800)
  • 6%: St. Louis Cardinals (+2200)
  • 4%: Atlanta Braves (+1000)
  • 2% Chicago Cubs (+4000)
  • 2%: Philadelphia Phillies (+4000)
  • 2%: Boston Red Sox

Will the Phillies break .500?

The Phillies have been mired in mediocrity and shut out of the postseason since 2011. With Harper and Realmuto, the Phillies have star power in the lineup. But the major questions are about starting pitching depth and fixing a bullpen that was one of the worst ever last season.

Nearly all the money (98%) at DraftKings is on the OVER for the Phillies win total (80.5) and for the Phillies to make the playoffs (yes, 98%).

Home team bias rings true for Phillies

For the Phillies, it’s “Bet, bet, bet on the home team…”

NL East splits for wagers placed in Pennsylvania show the bias:

By handle

  • 78% Phillies (+875)
  • 12%: Mets (+140)
  • 9%: Braves (+120)
  • 1%: Nationals (+600)
  • <1%: Marlins (+2500)

Across the whole DraftKings network, the NL East betting splits look different:

  • 40%: Mets
  • 30%: Phillies
  • 21%: Braves
  • 7%: Nationals
  • 2%: Marlins

PA and NJ bettors don’t think Phils will make deep postseason run

DraftKings recently provided a state-by-state (where the app is available) breakdown of World Series handle.

Here’s a look of where bettors’ early World Series futures money went in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Pennsylvania:

  • 17% New York Mets
  • 17%: San Diego Padres
  • 15%: Los Angeles Dodgers
  • 11%: Philadelphia Phillies
  • 10%: New York Yankees

New Jersey:

  • 36%: New York Mets
  • 28%: New York Yankees
  • 16%: Los Angeles Dodgers
  • 7%: San Diego Padres
  • 2%: Atlanta Braves

When it comes to the National League pennant, Pennsylvania bettors show their regional bias with 19% of the handle for National League winner futures on the Phillies, the second most in the state behind the Dodgers (34%).

What the books are saying

The Mets made one of the splashiest offseason moves, trading with the Indians to acquire Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco. After the trade, the Mets World Series odds moved from +1600 to +1200. Currently, the Mets are at +1000.

Johnny Avello, head of sportsbook and gaming operations at DraftKings, weighed in on what he thinks about the upcoming season and if the Phillies have a chance in the NL East.

“I think baseball is going to have a really strong year. Last year we had a shortened season and it went well, but I think people like a full season of baseball.

“I wouldn’t count the Phillies out totally. I think the Braves are the class of the NL East. The Marlins had a pretty good run last year. The Nationals and the Phillies are still competitive teams. Even though their odds reflect they won’t do as well, I wouldn’t count them out because I still think there are quality players (for the Phillies) and if Atlanta fails there is room for anyone in that division.”

FanDuel 2021 MLB Betting info

Bettors at FanDuel have faith in the Phillies.

The top two selections by handle in the NL MVP market are Bryce Harper and Corey Seager.

The top two by handle in the NL CY Young market are Jacob DeGrom and Aaron Nola.

Bettors are expecting the NL East to pack a lot of firepower this season. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Pete Alonso have garnered the most money in the “Most Regular Season Home Runs” market. FanDuel reports that of the 25 players in the “Most HRs” market, none has the majority of money on “Under” their home run total.

The top 4 teams by handle in the Regular Season Wins Total (O/U) are:

  • Philadelphia Phillies 81.5 (91% over, 9% Under)
  • Pittsburgh Pirates 58.5 (54% Over, 46% Under)
  • New York Mets 91 (53% Over, 47% Under)
  • New York Yankees 95.5 (86% Over, 14% Under)

BetRivers believes in the Phillies

At BetRivers retail sportsbook, bettors believe the Phillies will finally break .500.

98% of the money is on the “Over” for the Phillies win total (80.5) games.

Also, the early money from Pennsylvania points the Phillies winning the NL East.

Jim Llewellyn, manager of BetRivers Sportsbook, shared some insights from the retail sportsbook in Philadelphia.

NL East winner (PA only) by handle:

67%: Phillies (+875)
22%: Mets (+140)
6%: Braves (+120)
3%: Marlins (+2500)
2%: Nationals (+600)

NL East winner (all of BetRivers retail sportsbooks):

37%: Mets
29%: Braves
26%: Phillies
4%: Nationals
3%: Marlins

Pirates Stadium

Even as baseball season resumes for the Phillies and the Pirates, attending a sporting event in person remains a potential virus petri dish many fans are not ready for yet, according to a recent poll by the Washington Post and the University of Maryland.

Fewer than half of Americans feel comfortable seeing a live sporting event, according to the story, due to COVID-19.

Jeff Lyons, a true Philadelphia Phillies fanatic, is cautiously attending his 42nd home opener on Thursday, bundled against a temperature in the low 40s and a brisk wind, plus a virus mask and glasses.

“I’m so excited!” said Lyons, who works in corporate communications.

Lyons summed up the pull of watching live in person:

“This is my personal religious holiday. Fans are the power, the electricity. The swell of the crowd can’t be manufactured.”

He remains cautious and vigilant, though, not anxious to see sports indoors yet.

“There are so many knuckleheads.”

Virus worries by the numbers

The detailed findings are:

  • Just 42% of Americans are comfortable attending a live sporting event.
  • But 40% are not.
  • And 18% are unsure.
  • People say their own comfort levels vary widely based on conditions.
  • 54% say they’re comfortable attending sporting events if coronavirus case levels are low in the region.
  • About two-thirds feel comfortable attending an outdoor event such as baseball, which opened its season Thursday.
  • But less than a third feel comfortable attending an indoor event such as basketball.
  • Nearly 2 in 3 people, or 64%, would feel comfortable if all spectators were required to wear masks.
  • Only 22% would feel comfortable if there was no mask requirement.
  • Nearly two-thirds or 63% say it is a large or moderate risk to attend a sporting event now.
  • That includes 26% who say it’s a large risk.
  • Nearly two-thirds say they feel comfortable going to a sporting event after they have received a vaccine.
  • There is a sharp partisan divide on the issue of mask mandates with 96% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents supporting them.
  • By comparison, among Republicans and Republican leaners, 52% support wearing masks.

Baseball is the test for returning fans despite the virus

As America continues the rollout of vaccines, the first test of returning fans to stands is baseball.

After staging its entire 2020 regular season in empty ballparks, capacity limits now range from 12% for the Boston Red Sox to 100% for the – you guessed it – Texas Rangers.

Virus caps for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia

For Philly’s Citizen Bank Park, where the Phils hosted the Atlanta Braves for their opener, the capacity is capped at a quarter, or 8,800. Virus cases in Philly rose sharply over the past two weeks, twice the numbers of cases in February.

The Pirates played away on Opening Day at the Cubs Wrigley Field, which is capped at 20% capacity, or about 8,270 fans.

The Pirates meet the Chicago Cubs again for their home opener in Pittsburgh on April 8. The park’s capacity is also capped at a quarter, a maximum of about 7,600 fans. Allegheny County is seeing a spike in virus infections over the past two weeks.

One ball game, the New York Mets vs. the Nationals in Washington, D.C. was postponed on Thursday after a Nationals player tested positive for COVID-19.

Philly fans are “insane”

Having fans at games makes a huge difference according to former sports journalist Tim Kelly.

His take on PA sports fans:

“Philly fans are insane. Pittsburgh fans are nicer, they don’t go for the jugular.”

Spectators make a huge difference in a game, especially indoors, he added. “They incentivize a team.”

Though fully vaccinated, he’s not ready to return to the bleachers because as the primary caregiver for his elderly mother, the risk is not worth it.

For now, he is contenting himself with quickly slipping into a casino with retail sports betting and placing a bet to soak up the atmosphere, and quickly leaving.

“The best way I can control the virus is by staying home.”

Attitudes vary by region

Fan sentiments are regional. Americans in the Midwest are most comfortable attending a live sporting event at 47%. That compares with 42% in the South and also West, and just 34% in the Northeast.

Sixers and Flyers capacity

Attendance at Flyers and 76ers games can be about 3,000 in early April under state standards – but only if the city adjusts its capacity regulations.

The PokerStars Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker reaches its climactic finale this weekend with the PASCOOP Main Events starting Sunday, May 23. With it comes the end of the site’s first major tournament series for PokerStars PA‘s newest ambassadors, Keith Becker and Mark Foresta.

Both Becker and Foresta had been dedicated PokerStars PA players and Twitch streamers prior to becoming official site ambassadors earlier this month. They’ve each notched some impressive results in PASCOOP as well while entertaining their audiences over their livestreams.

Playin Pennsylvania reached out to Becker and Foresta to share a few PASCOOP-related thoughts heading into the Main Events.

PASCOOP awards $1.82M ahead of final weekend

So far the (now) 41-event, 123-tournament PASCOOP has performed especially well. Turnouts have been consistently large, with tournaments routinely exceeding their guarantees.

Heading into tonight, 90 tournaments have completed with over 35,000 total entries and $1.82 million awarded. The entire series had guarantees adding up to $2 million. That mark will surely be exceeded before PASCOOP ends on Monday.

As noted, Becker and Foresta have been playing PASCOOP events throughout with both making several deep runs.

Becker, also known as “AccidentalGrenade” online, plays as “whoopsboom” on PokerStars PA. Among his cashes so far are two third-place finishes, a fifth-place finish, and a ninth.

Foresta goes by “NaigoPA” on the site, and he, too, has made multiple deep runs. On Tuesday this week Foresta took third in Event #26-H, the Super Tuesday Special Edition. Joining him deep in that event was fellow PokerStars Ambassador Jennifer Shahade who finished ninth.

Foresta again went deep last night in an event added to the schedule just this week. In the “Medium” version of Event #41 (pot-limit Omaha hi-lo), NaigoPA finished fifth.

‘Poker is a game and it’s meant to be enjoyed’ says Mark ‘NaigoPA’ Foresta

“The series is amazing,” says Mark Foresta. He particularly likes that PokerStars PA has “buy-ins available for everyone,” ranging from $5 to $2,000 during PASCOOP. “There are some who have never been able to play a poker tournament with the prestige of a PokerStars SCOOP title on the line, and now they have that chance.”

Foresta recalls feeling similarly when living in New Jersey. While there, he managed once to win a NJSCOOP title on PokerStars NJ. “I can tell you from that experience, the first series win is magical.”

“For PASCOOP primarily I have been hitting the poker books,” says Foresta. He adds he’s prepared more for streaming PASCOOP in part so he can be better prepared mentally to play.

“I have been carefully planning out my days, giving myself enough time for my day job” as a software engineer, he says. That includes exercising regularly as well.

Indeed, for Foresta streaming his play is partly about entertaining and helping others improve. But more than anything, Foresta focuses on community building.

“My main goal in streaming is to add to the social part of poker which, to me, can certainly be the best part,” he says. “Poker success is always more fun when you get to share it with others.”

When giving advice to PASCOOP players, Foresta points out the importance of playing within your bankroll and always striving to improve your game.

But first and foremost, he says, remember to have fun.

“Poker is a game and it’s meant to be enjoyed,” he says. “These tournaments do have amazing guarantees and huge opportunities to show you are one of the best players in the state, but I am a firm believer if you aren’t having fun you’re going to make mistakes and you won’t play your best game.”

Competition and camaraderie motivate Keith ‘whoopsboom’ Becker

Keith Becker works as a software developer and business analyst. A natural entertainer, he enjoys sharing his poker playing with audiences. But he also relishes the tangential discussions and the extracurricular entertainment streams can produce.

That includes sometimes poking fun at his streaming partner Foresta — “harmless jabs,” Becker grins.

Keith Becker>Like Foresta, Becker especially values the variety of stakes in series like PASCOOP. “As a lower stakes player, I am loving the affordable variety that this series has to offer,” says Becker. “PokerStars is so clearly listening to players,” he adds. Supporting the point, he notes the “many small tweaks” PokerStars PA has recently made to the regular schedule.

Like Foresta, Becker also talks a lot about practicing sound bankroll management with his viewers, some of whom are just starting out in poker.

“Even the best players go through downswings, and even more likely when you’re still learning the game,” he notes. “But with the proper bankroll management, you afford yourself the time to learn this great game, and it can be a fun hobby!”

With so many near-misses at PASCOOP titles between them, the competition is heating up between Becker and Foresta entering the final weekend.

“My goal for the series was to win a PASCOOP event,” says Becker. “While I have many wins on PokerStars PA, I have yet to acquire one in a series. If Naigo gets a win before me, I will never hear the end of it!”

“I’m joking, of course,” he adds. “I’d be ecstatic for him, but we do compete constantly.”

Busy days ahead for PokerStars PA players as PASCOOP concludes

As Foresta and Becker continue to grow their poker communities on Twitch, the addition of those two as ambassadors indicates PokerStars’ growing commitment to their US sites.

Meanwhile the next few days should be plenty busy for Foresta and Becker as well as for other PokerStars PA players. There are still 33 PASCOOP tournaments left to play out from Friday to Monday. Twelve of those tournaments happen on Sunday, May 2, including the three PASCOOP Main Events at 6 p.m.:

  • $300 NLHE PASCOOP Main Event, $200K gtd. (Event #36-H)
  • $75 NLHE PASCOOP Main Event – Mid, $40K gtd. (Event #36-M)
  • $30 NLHE PASCOOP Main Event – Mini, $20K gtd. (Event #36-L)

Earlier on Sunday as well is the PASCOOP Depositor Freeroll at 2 p.m. PokerStars PA players who deposit $30 or more using the bonus code “PASCOOP” prior to then receive an entry into the freeroll. The top 50 finishers will win seats into the $300 “High” version of the Main Event, meaning $15,000 worth of tournament tickets are up for grabs.

It will be interesting to see just how many come out for this weekend’s Main Events, and whether Foresta and/or Becker can break through to capture a title.

Derby PA Odds

A year ago – or should we say, eight months ago because the Kentucky Derby was moved to Sept. 5 because of COVID-19 – the Run for the Roses featured a seemingly unbeatable morning line favorite Tiz the Law.

However, Tiz wasn’t the case as the 3-5 favorite finished second to Authentic.

This year, there is no overwhelming favorite. In fact, the horses handicappers thought were the cream of this 3-year-old crop won’t be in the gate Saturday for the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville. Life Is Good (injury) and Concert Tour (trainer’s decision) have missed their chance.

Following this theme of who won’t win, we turn to the leading trainers who are hoping to break through.

Trainers looking for their first Derby win in 2021

One shocking statement is that no Louisville-born trainer has won the Kentucky Derby. Enter Brad Cox, who has two entries (morning-line favorite Essential Quality at 2-1 and Mandaloun at 15-1).

“It’s about time,” said Cox, 41, of making that happen. He’s been training horses for 16 years. Nothing like snapping an 0-for-147 all-time streak.

Another who’s been shut out is Steve Asmussen, who sits No. 2 all-time on the list of most wins in the history of the sport – a mark he’s expected to break this year. So why not chip away on Saturday by having Midnight Bourbon (20-1) or Super Stock (30-1) stand in the winner’s circle?

Then there’s renowned trainer Chad Brown, who has a spectacular track record on turf. He brings Highly Motivated (10-1) to the gate Saturday.

Also among the most respected trainers is Wesley Ward, known for his outstanding ability to work with young horses. Not only has he not won the Kentucky Derby, he’s never had a horse enter. Ward is superb at getting horses to win at 5 or 6 furlongs, but not 10, as will be the case Saturday. His Like The King (50-1) has two wins in six career starts, and will be making his dirt debut.

Pace Scenarios and the Top Four Contenders

Key to winning the Kentucky Derby, like most races, is the pace. There doesn’t appear to be any true speed horses entered this year. Many assume that Soup and Sandwich (30-1 from Gate 19) will go to the front. Horses that prefer using a closing (rallying) running style need a hot pace to succeed.

Down the stretch, consider this:

  • Winners in 27 of the past 31 Derbies ran 13 seconds or better in the final furlong or 38 seconds or faster in the final three furlongs of their most recent race.
  • Since 1992, 26 of 29 Derby winners recorded a Beyer Speed Figure of 95 or more in at least one of their career races.
  • Since 2000, 18 of 21 Derby winners have delivered a 100+ Brisnet before the Kentucky Derby.

Four horses meet these criteria (according to TheLines) and can’t be ruled out:

Essential Quality (2-1):

Undefeated in four starts, he’s going for the rare Breeders Cup/Kentucky Derby double, something only Street Sense (2006-07) and Nyquist (2015-16) have achieved. Renowned super-bettor Mattress Mack has said he’ll be placing a $2 million bet on the favorite – so if it’s Essential Quality come the 6:57 p.m. ET post time, payouts could be miniscule.

Rock Your World (5-1):

He’s the only horse with a 100 Beyer on his resume (Hot Rod Charlie and Medina each have 99s) and has shown to have tactical speed over a long course. Trainer John Sadler’s best Kentucky Derby finish was sixth (1993, Corby). A top-rated jockey Joel Rosario (one lifetime Derby win) will be on board, mounting this horse for the first time.

Hot Rod Charlie (8-1):

He has strong tactical speed and can find a good position early in the race. He has a strong foundation with plenty of solid 2-year-old form. Given six weeks off, he comes into the big race relatively fresh and ready to fire his absolute best. These are the thoughts of HorseRacingNation’s Brian Zipse, and make a compelling case for me.

Highly Motivated (10-1):

A strong argument can be made that the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland April 3 was this year’s top prep race. It certainly was the deepest as it featured Essential Quality, Hidden Stash (50-1), Rombauer and three other stakes winners. Highly Motivated finished second behind Essential Quality in that one. This distance might not suit Highly Motivated well, but he has posted Brisnet Speed Ratings of 102 in three straight races.

The No. 1 Post Position

Known Agenda (6-1) would have been given better odds had trainer Todd Pletcher not drawn the 1 hole. TV analysts all day will discuss the perils of being stuck all the way inside. But a year ago, Churchill Downs changed its gate so that it sits 15 feet further from the rail. Known Agenda added blinkers in an allowance race a few months back and “the light went on.” His stalking style should do him well.

Under the Radar

Dynamic One (20-1): In the Wood Memorial, he made a strong closing move, took the lead in the stretch and looked like a winner until his stablemate and a 72-1 longshot that day, Bourbonic (30-1 on Saturday), caught him at the wire.

Bob Baffert’s Only Chance

It’s been a rough 3-year-old season for elite trainer Bob Baffert, but he does bring in Medina Spirit (15-1) so bet against him at your own risk. (Baffert trained Life Is Good and Concert Tour). Baffert called Medina Spirit a “top 10” horse in this field. A win Saturday would be Baffert’s seventh in the Derby, making him the winningest Derby trainer all-time.

Live Long shot

Looking at the longest shots on the board, one that could shock the field is Sainthood (50-1). Perhaps he’s the horse that could turn your trifecta or superfecta bet into a huge score. He’s one of four horses racing for trainer Todd Pletcher.

Who’s Going to Win?

Hot Rod Charlie.*

Just in time for the Derby, racing fans will find enhanced betting features on the TVG app, which should help with making informed horse bets.

Right on the app, bettors can now access past performance data for every horse in the race. You’ll also find starting prices, runner comments, trainer and jockey information, betting trends, and other insights. The enhanced “bets” section now includes a re-bet feature for multi-race bets (Pick 5 and Pick 4), approximate payouts, personalized will-pays directly on the betting ticket, and improved navigation.

The upgraded app also allows fans to watch live video, check pools, access handicapping data and place wagers all on one screen.

“A lot of hard work has gone into these improvements over the past year by the team,” VP of Racing Product, Stephen Kennelly, said in a press release. “We’ve focused on two key themes with our app, ease of use and presenting the right info at the right time. Customer research and feedback has been great on both the handicapping info and Bets improvements and we are looking forward to even further improvements later this year.”

Mistreatment Allegations

It’s not the kind of news restaurants want to make.

According to multiple news outlets, some former employees of the Guy Fieri restaurant at Live! Casino Pittsburgh in Westmoreland County protested outside the facility Monday, calling for more equitable pay among workers and highlighting some alarming allegations made by former employees.

In particular, Nathaniel Ridley, a former cook at Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar, said a manager used a racial slur when confronting kitchen staff about some music playing one day. According to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4, both Ridley and fellow employee Kendra Gillcrese witnessed the alleged slur.

“It was just mind-blowing,” Ridley said. “He just stood there and he never said ‘I’m sorry,’ or showed any remorse.”

Added Gillcrese: “I was just shocked and I went home and was like, ‘Did he really just say that?’”

Allegations against American Kitchen + Bar at Live!

According to Action News 4, Ridley and Gillcrese said they reported the incident to human resources, but nothing significant happened.

And so, employees planned the protest. In addition to the alleged slur, Ridley said he later learned he was being paid less than other employees for similar roles and responsibilities.

One of the goals for Monday’s protest, along with an online petition that has been circulated, was to encourage management to consider racial sensitivity training for its staff. The protesters are also seeking back pay for employees who may have been mistreated.

In response, a spokesperson for Live! Casino issued the following statement to Channel 4:

“Live! Casino Pittsburgh and Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar are proud of the jobs we have created in Westmoreland County, are committed to our Team Members, and are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The allegation that our compensation varies by race is simply false.”

Live! Casino Pittsburgh opened in November

Guy Fieri’s American Kitchen + Bar opened alongside Live! Casino Pittsburgh in November 2020 at the Westmoreland Mall in Hempfield Township.

In a press release announcing his restaurant’s opening, Fieri said: “Pennsylvanians know great food and I’ve seen it all around the state shooting (the Food Network’s ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’) and with my own restaurants, so I couldn’t be more stoked to bring my American Kitchen + Bar to Live! Casino Pittsburgh. Get on board Pittsburgh, we’re heading to Flavortown!”

But a few months into its first year, the American Kitchen +Bar has encountered some bad publicity.

And it’s not the kind of news any restaurant wants to make.

$150k PA Lottery Powerball winner

While no one won second place in the last Powerball drawing, there was one big winner in Pennsylvania. This particular winner matched four of the five white balls drawn plus the red Powerball. As a reminder, the winning numbers were 22 – 36 – 48 – 59 – 61 with a red Powerball of 22.

Normally, a third-place prize in Powerball is worth $50,000. However, this ticket tacked on the optional $1 Power Play option. Moreover, the multiplier drawn was three, boosting the prize to $150,000.

Al’s Market located at 24 Braddock Ave. in Braddock sold the winner and earns a $500 bonus. Remember that in Pennsylvania, you have one year from the date of the drawing to claim any prizes. Make sure to sign the back of the winning ticket and keep it secure. Then, contact the nearest PA Lottery office.

Lottery tickets online

Just for the last Powerball drawing, the PA Lottery reports that more than 22,600 tickets sold were winners of some amount. Of those, more than 6,700 tickets added on the $1 Power Play to boost the winnings.

Also, in Pennsylvania, you can buy Powerball tickets online directly through the PA online lottery. Receive a welcome bonus and ongoing promotions plus new lottery games are unveiled constantly.

Finally, there are other states where Powerball tickets are available online:

Steelers Draft Odds

It’s pretty hard to believe.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, built for years upon the pillars of power football, finished dead last in rushing last season. They had just 1,351 rushing yards all year and averaged just 3.6 yards per carry. Both marks were last in the league.

The bleak reality of their run game is pretty hard to believe. And that’s the exact reason most of the mock drafts this offseason have focused on upgrading the rushing attack.

Alabama running back Najee Harris has been a frequent match. So have some of the draft’s mid-tier offensive linemen, such as Oklahoma State’s Teven Jenkins and Alabama’s Landon Dickerson. But whichever player gets picked at No. 25 will likely be an asset for that league-worst rushing attack.

“We’ve got to be a lot better in running, and certainly, we don’t want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers being last in the league in rushing ever again,” Steelers president Art Rooney II told CBS Sports. “I think it’s something that our coaches are focused on, and we’ll be focused on ways to improve in the draft. It’s something we’ve got to fix, and we’re working on it.”

The answers will arrive Thursday night, when the first round of the NFL Draft begins at 8 p.m. Rounds 2-3 start at 7 p.m. Friday. And rounds 4-7 begin at noon on Saturday.

There’s no draft betting in Pennsylvania, but that could change someday soon

Unfortunately, betting on the draft is not yet legal in Pennsylvania. As noted in a recent article at Playin Pennsylvania, Act 42 of PA’s gambling expansion law limits wagers to live sporting events.

“The business of accepting wagers on sporting events or on the individual performance statistics of athletes in a sporting event or combination of sporting events by any system or method of wagering, including over the Internet through websites and mobile applications. The term includes, but is not limited to, exchange wagering, parlays, over-under, moneyline, pools and straight bets.”

The draft is not considered a sporting event and so, the law would need to be amended before wagers would be allowed.

But that day could arrive in the future. That same PlayPA article noted that draft betting continues to grow in popularity.

According to Johnny Avello, head of sportsbook and gaming operations at DraftKings Sportsbook, more states could soon add non sporting events such as the draft.

“Eventually, states will get comfortable with it,” he believes.

Draft betting odds are live in New Jersey and other select states

Pennsylvania’s next door neighbor New Jersey is one of the states that already allows draft betting. So Steelers fans can find odds for their first-round draft pick at the sportsbooks there. And if they’re willing to drive, they could even place a wager.

Recent odds via BetMGM for the Steelers’ first round pick focused as expected on positions that might bolster the rushing attack. Previously, the offensive lineman was favored for the Steelers’ first pick. But that has flipped to running back being heavily favored. The position odds according to BetMGM at the time of writing are as follows:

  • Running back: -150
  • Offensive line: +240
  • Cornerback: +800
  • Linebacker: +2000
  • Defensive lineman: +2000
  • Quarterback: +2500
  • Wide receiver: +3000

DraftKings Sportsbook has free NFL Draft pools

And if you’re looking to add some excitement beyond a single pick, DraftKings Sportsbook has a free pool for each day of the draft.

The pools have prop-bet style selections based on certain picks, positions, and trades as well. There’s a total prize pool of $50,000 with a first-place payout of $1,000. And best of all, they are all free to enter.

So even though Pennsylvania doesn’t allow draft wagering, DraftKings is providing another avenue into the action.

And for Steelers fans especially, who will be waiting a while Thursday night before the team picks at No. 24, a pool seems like a perfect diversion.

Eventually, Pittsburgh will get its turn.

And that running game should get some attention.

The NFL Draft may provide plenty of entertainment for the fans, but it certainly helps each team too.

And there’s no doubt the Steelers need it.
