Small town of Lonaconing, MD waits in suspense for $731M winner

Lonaconing, MD, has a population of around 1,200 people. According to the Washington Post, the population comprises around 400 families, has dropped by over half in the past 50 years. Yet, the past few weeks brought a new life and excitement to this little town because someone bought a Powerball ticket that won the $731 million jackpot in January. This jackpot broke some records, such as Maryland’s biggest jackpot win and the fifth-largest payout in US history.

According to the owner of Coney Market, Richard Ravenscroft, the winner is someone local. However, MD is one of seven states where lottery winners can remain anonymous. The town saw a sudden influx of visitors, and lottery sales soared for a brief period of time at Coney Market. However, now that the excitement is dying down a bit, locals are impatiently waiting for the winner to donate some winnings towards improving the town, where the poverty rate is 24%, double the statewide number.

Yet, the question remains, “Who won?” Remember that a group of winners called the “Power Pack” claimed the jackpot in late May. While the group opted for the lump-sum payment of $367 million in May, townspeople are still scratching their heads and looking for any inclination that someone struck it rich in their town.
