McGregor vs. Poirier 3 preview

In their first bout in 2014, McGregor scored a first-round TKO against Poirier that ended with some controversy.

McGregor’s biggest punch landed on the back of Poirier’s skull and MMA rules prohibit strikes to the back of the head. However, the referee believed Poirier stepped into the strike, so McGregor’s victory was allowed to stand.

In their rematch at UFC 257 in January, McGregor entered the fight around -300 on the moneyline. But Poirier unleashed a flurry of punches in the second round to win by TKO. As noted in The Guardian, it was the first time McGregor (22-5) had been knocked out in his entire MMA career.

Now, fans are anxiously awaiting the deciding match. The UFC released the trilogy fight’s poster via a tweet in May. And this week, the fight preview video arrived, which incorporated highlights of both fighters interspersed with Teddy Roosevelt’s famous “Man in the Arena” speech.

It has the effect of stirring fans into a fervor, manufacturing even more excitement for the upcoming fight.

The featured match is perhaps the most anticipated fight of the year, a bout that should settle the McGregor-Poirier rivalry once and for all.

Excitement keeps building. The odds are nearly even. And the fans can hardly wait.

Insight from sportsbooks for McGregor vs. Poirier 3 UFC 264

At William Hill, McGregor has the advantage with 62% of the total bets. However,  Poirier has the edge with 53% of handle. One Nevada bettor staked $52,500 on Poirier -105 for a total potential payout of $102,500, which is the largest UFC 264 wager taken thus far at William Hill.

Nick Bogdanovich, Director of Trading for William Hill commented:

“Poirier and McGregor is going to be a monster handle. Sharps are on Poirier. We opened Conor as a small favorite, now Poirier is -130. McGregor was a huge favorite in his last fight against Poirier [in January]. So how much can you cut it? We opened him near pick’em after he was over three dollars (-300) the last time. The sharps are telling us that we didn’t adjust enough.

“There will be McGregor money this weekend for sure. I don’t think the masses have quit him completely. At one point, McGregor money was unstoppable. But since he has just one win over the past few years, it’s slowed down some. Poirier is no chump, Conor is going to have to have a serious camp and have his A-game to beat him.”

Reps from FanDuel said UFC bets tend to come in closer to the match, especially at retail sportsbooks.

At FanDuel, 54% of the moneyline bets are on McGregor, but 55% of the handle is for Poirier

The Top 2 selections by handle in the Method of Victory market are:

  • Poirier by KO/TKO is 33% of the handle
  • McGregor by KO/TKO is 33% of the handle
