Wentz Stellar for Bettors in 2020 Somehow

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz didn’t just have the worst season of his career. It was a historically awful campaign for a signal caller.

He had one of the biggest dropoffs in NFL history for passer rating and was on pace to be sacked the most times in a season. He was benched at halftime in Week 13 and didn’t play another snap the rest of the season.

It was a brutal 2020 season for Wentz. However, it was a profitable one for Wentz bettors.

Wait. What?

According to DraftKings sportsbook‘s 2020 season recap, Wentz was the second-most profitable player for bettors at the online sportsbook.

Wentz a winner for bettors

Johnny Avello, head of sportsbook and gaming operations at DraftKings, said:

“Carson scored the first touchdown in a few games at pretty big odds so that’s where the players profited.”

Wentz scored the first touchdown at odds of usually +1400 in the following games:

  • Week 2 vs. Los Angeles Rams (first Eagles’ TD)
  • Week 4 vs. San Francisco 49ers
  • Week 7 vs. New York Giants

What’s next for Wentz and Eagles?

Rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts replaced Wentz in Week 12 with the Eagles at 3-8-1. Hurts showed flashes of potential, but an aging roster decimated by injuries ultimately doomed the Birds to a 4-12-1 record and last place in a historically bad NFC East.

Before their Week 17 game against Washington, a report from Adam Schefter stated that Carson Wentz would seek a trade in the offseason and that his relationship with head coach Doug Pederson was “fractured beyond repair.”

Pederson was fired on Jan. 11. FanDuel listed Pederson as the favorite (+300) to be named the New York Jets head coach. In the “Philadelphia Eagles next head coach” market, Robert Saleh was the favorite (+300). The New York Jets hired him on Jan. 14 to replace Adam Gase at the helm.

Currently, Duce Staley (+300) is the favorite for the Eagles head coach position. Find updated odds on the next head coach market here (available in NJ, not PA).
