Flyers flying high and FanDuel now streaming NFL games

The Philadelphia Flyers have soared over the past month. After a 5-0 loss to the cellar-dwelling New Jersey Devils on Feb.6, the Flyers were a team on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Since then, the Flyers have won nine of eleven and are three points out of the lead in the Metropolitan Division.

Across the state, it’s been a different story for the sinking Pittsburgh Penguins. Feb. 20 marked the start of a six-game losing skid during which they were thoroughly dominated 24-8. The Penguins defeated the Ottawa Senators on March 3 with a score of 7-3 to get back into the win column.

The skid proved costly. In the span of ten days, the Penguins went from first place in the Metropolitan Division to fifth in the Eastern Conference.

With a playoff push in full effect, online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania have plenty of hockey action to offer.

FanDuel adds in-app live streaming of NHL Games

FanDuel started live streaming NHL games within its app on March 2. The online sportsbook plans to show up to two live streams each day throughout the NHL regular season.

FanDuel live streaming NHL games in-app

It’s a part of a new partnership with IMG Arena which recently obtained the rights to give legal sports betting operators live streams of certain out-of-market NHL games. Sorry Penguins and Flyers fans, you won’t be able to watch the PA teams in the FanDuel app. Blackouts apply to local teams and national broadcasts.

How to watch NHL games on FanDuel:

  • You must be in a state like Pennsylvania or New Jersey where legal sports betting is available
  • Login into FanDuel
  • Click on the “live” tab, then the “watch live” icon next to the NHL game
  • If you have a funded FanDuel account (i.e. there is money in your FanDuel account) or placed a wager on the event, you’ll be able to view the game.

Live streaming in a sports betting app might seem like a monumental leap in the new world of post-PAPSA sports betting but it’s common in Europe and around the world. FanDuel says in 2019, 56 million unique viewers around the world watched more than 10.5 billion minutes of IMG Arena content.

Live streaming a pro sport like the NHL is a first for FanDuel in the United States. Last year in New Jersey, users were able to view live European soccer and tennis.

The new live streaming feature only adds more fuel to FanDuel’s arsenal. FanDuel has led all PA sportsbook operators in handle and revenue since August. FanDuel’s $153 million handle represented about half of all mobile wagers placed in Pennsylvania in January.

Niall Connell, GM and SVP of FanDuel Group commented in the press release:

“As we continue to innovate and expand nationwide, the ability to further enhance the live game and live betting experience is increasingly important to our customers. Our goal is to become a one-stop-shop for all sports and betting content, and live streaming professional sports like hockey is one of the many ways we are reaching that goal.”
