NCAAB Conference Tournaments Odds in PA

Let’s run it back.

The pandemic arrived last year right in the middle of college basketball’s conference tournaments. It was a mortar shell that landed with a thud, disrupting perhaps the best time of the year for sports bettors.

The conference tournaments never reached their rightful conclusions. That cornucopia of mid-day basketball never happened. It was a heavy dose of March sadness – and some of it still lingers.

But early on Thursday, the Horizon League conference tournament tipped off in Indianapolis. On Friday, the America East tournament begins. And bigger conferences will follow soon, bringing back so many of the beloved things we missed last year.

It’s our chance to run it back. And it all starts this week. Let’s take a quick look at the conference tournament schedule and some of the odds available at the best PA sportsbooks.

FanDuel has Villanova favored to win the Big East tournament

Pennsylvania’s college basketball fans will have to wait a little longer for the action that’s closest to home. The Big East conference tournament doesn’t begin for almost two weeks, tipping off on March 10 in New York. FanDuel has Villanova as the favorite to win at -105, with Creighton next at +170.

In the ACC, Pitt, who had a couple of players recently plan to transfer, is a long-shot at +5500. Florida State is the favorite at +250. Virginia (+400), North Carolina (+500), Virginia Tech (+600) and Duke (+700) round out the top five. That tournament is also a later one, starting on March 9 in North Carolina.

Latest Villanova Wildcats futures odds

Tourney action will get pretty heavy by next weekend

By next weekend, a number of the mid-major conferences will have begun. Most sportsbooks have restricted futures betting to the bigger conferences, but individual game betting is always an option. And there will be plenty of it.

ESPN’s roundup of the conference tournaments can help keep you informed. Most of the major conferences will begin their tournaments around March 10.

Here’s a quick rundown of the remaining conference futures, with the odds provided by FanDuel.

American Athletic Conference odds

  • Houston: -290
  • Memphis: +550
  • SMU: +600
  • Wichita State: +750
  • Cincinnati: +3500

Atlantic 10 Conference odds

  • VCU: +240
  • Saint Louis: +250
  • St. Bonaventure: +350
  • Richmond: +400
  • Davidson: +1100

Big 12 Conference odds

  • Baylor: -185
  • West Virginia: +550
  • Kansas: +700
  • Texas: +700
  • Oklahoma: +1000

SEC Conference

  • Alabama: +250
  • Arkansas: +310
  • Tennessee: +400
  • Missouri: +450
  • Florida: +950

Beyond these, the Big 10 should also have odds posted sometime soon, the delay a result of late games Thursday night.

New DraftKings users can get 100-1 odds with a single three-pointer

It’s fair to also assume Pennsylvania’s sportsbooks will roll out some promotions in conjunction with the abundance of college basketball that will soon take over our televisions.

Currently, DraftKings Sportsbook has a boost that will pay any new user 100-1 odds if the basketball team they bet on makes a three-pointer. And other promotions for current users should be available soon.

Put simply, it’s a splendid time of year for sports fans and something even better for those who enjoy betting on college basketball.

We missed it all last year.

And we had to wait a while for the return. But the redemption tour is upon us.

It’s time to run it back.

UFC fight night odds during betting drought

Well, this is depressing.

Some people are calling it March Sadness. The coronavirus has decimated the sports calendar, laying waste to all kinds of sports coverage – and perhaps a little bit of our hearts too.

The NCAA Tournament, the biggest sports betting event of the year, has been cancelled. The same fate befell the Masters. The NBA‘s season has been suspended and Major League Baseball is delayed too. Pretty much every major league and every major sport in America is on hiatus, with the return dates likely to be at least a month away.

UFC Fight Night in Brazil can fill the sports void

It’s a dark time in the sports world. But one beacon of light will arrive on Saturday in Brazil.

The UFC is holding its Fight Night as scheduled, albeit with no fans in attendance due to coronavirus concerns.

Beyond that, the PA sportsbooks are full of futures bets, with both the MLB and NBA expected to resume their seasons at some point.

So there’s hope on the horizon, with some betting options available to keep you busy until our beloved sports return. Let’s start with this weekend’s action in Brazil.

Kevin Lee, Charles Oliveira meet in the main event

Preliminary fights for the UFC card begin at 3 p.m. Saturday with the main card following at 6 p.m. The matchups and their betting lines according to BetRivers Sportsbook app are as follows:

  • Francisco Trinaldo (-175) vs. John Makdessi (+138)
  • Johnny Walker (-148)  vs. Nikita Krylov (+117)
  • Rani Yahya (+150) vs. Enrique Barzola (-190)
  • Demian Maia (+151) vs. Gilbert Burns (-190)
  • Kevin Lee (-148) vs. Charles Oliveira (+119)

A number of the online sportsbooks also have specials for Saturday’s fights. FanDuel Sportsbook has posted a number of parlay options. FOX Bet has boosted odds on numerous fights and DraftKings has some boosted wagers as well.

If you’re looking for something to bet on this weekend, the UFC event will give you plenty of options.

MLB futures are available while season is on hold

Although there won’t be any baseball games played anytime soon, bettors can still make wagers on the MLB season.

Future bets are available at a number of sportsbooks featuring the World Series champion, the American and National League winners, as well as some player awards and props.

FOX Bet has the Philadelphia Phillies at 20-1 to win the World Series. On the other side of the state, the Pittsburgh Pirates are major underdogs at 100-1.

The New York Yankees are the favorites at +350. And the Houston Astros, who spent the offseason embroiled in a cheating scandal, are next at +600.

In other odds, PlaySugarHouse has the Phillies at +900 to win the National League. The Pirates are 100-1 on that front too. The Los Angeles Dodgers are heavy favorites at +170.

Bryce Harper is 16-1 to win the NL MVP

Some player futures are also available at FOX Bet. Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts is the favorite to be the National League MVP at +550. Phillies outfielder Bryce Harper is 16-1. Teammate Rhys Hoskins returns 50-1 odds.

Furthermore, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom (+333) is the favorite for the National League Cy Young Award. Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola has boosted odds at +2800.

In the American League, Mike Trout (+125) is the favorite for the MVP and former Pirate Gerrit Cole (+300) is the favorite for the AL Cy Young Award.

Keep the hope, power through

Thanks to the coronavirus, there’s no denying March is a little depressing this year. But that doesn’t mean it’s devoid of hope. A few UFC fights and a few futures bets might help you shake off the sadness.

Before long, the sports will return.

And happiness will arrive right with them.

NFL week 2 lines at pa sportsbooks

NFL Week 1 was rough for some bettors who decided not to fade the public.

At DraftKings, the largest percentage of moneyline bets went to the favorites (and eventual losers) the Indianapolis Colts (98%) and the Philadelphia Eagles (89%).

For Pennsylvania-based NFL teams, it was literally a tale of two cities. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger started his Comeback Player of the Year campaign strong. The Steelers (-5.5) handled the New York Giants 26-16, with Roethlisberger tossing three touchdowns.

The Eagles jumped out to a 17-0 lead in Washington but saw it all slip away in the second half. The Washington Football Team (+5.5) sacked Carson Wentz eight times and rallied for a 27-17 victory.

Week Two action brings a full slate of NFL games and more ways than ever to bet on the NFL in Pennsylvania. The Barstool Sportsbook app had its three-day test period this week and is available 24/7 for anyone 21+ physically located in PA.

Week 2 NFL betting lines at PA sportsbooks

Here is a look at the current betting lines at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetRivers (select PA in the drop-down menu).

[odds-feed sport=nfl default_region=pa sportsbooks=DraftKings,FanDuel,RiversCasinoPA odds=pointspread limit=25 controls=false]

Chiefs and Buccaneers biggest Week 2 favorites

Despite a Week One loss, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the biggest favorites (-9) in Week Two when they host the Carolina Panthers. Quarterbacks Tom Brady and Teddy Bridgewater are looking for their first wins with their new teams.

Coming off an impressive 34-20 win against the Houston Texans, the Kansas City Chiefs (-8.5) are big road favorites against the San Diego Chargers. The defending Super Bowl champ Chiefs have won 10 straight (which includes two victories against the Chargers).

The Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys, with their talented receivers, boast the matchup of the highest over/under (54).

Los Angeles Rams vs. Philadelphia Eagles Week 2 Betting Preview

The Eagles hope to have some reinforcements for their Week Two showdown versus the Los Angeles Rams. The Eagles say Derek Barnett, Lane Johnson and Miles Sanders are on track to make their season debuts on Sunday. Defensive end Brandon Graham (concussion) and defensive tackle Javon Hargrave (hamstring, pectoral) were both limited on Thursday at practice, and wide receiver Alshon Jeffrey (foot) did not participate.

The Rams beat the Dallas Cowboys 20-17 to open the season. Early Week Two lines, however, had the Eagles as 4-point favorites. Since then, the line has fluctuated a bit.

Los Angeles Rams vs. Philadelphia Eagles betting stats and info:

  • Each of the Eagles’ last seven games at Lincoln Financial Field have gone UNDER the total points line.
  • Three of the Rams’ last five games have gone OVER the total points line.
  • The Eagles have won six straight versus Los Angeles dating back to 2005.
  • In Week One, Rams running back Malcom Brown rushed 18 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns.
  • At DraftKings, 82% of bettors favor the Rams at +1. The Rams (-107) are getting 68% of the moneyline handle. The majority of the handle (66%) for the over/under is going to the UNDER (45.5).

Denver Broncos vs. Pittsburgh Steelers Week 2 Betting Preview

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger returned in a big way. He threw for 229 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Steelers to a 26-16 win over the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster benefitted from Big Ben’s return, hauling in two TDs. They take on the Broncos on Sunday.

After missing three attempts, Stephen Gostkowski‘s field goal with 17 seconds left gave the Tennessee Titans a 16-14 win over the Denver Broncos. The Steelers defense intercepted Daniel Jones twice and will look to rattle another second-year QB, Drew Lock.

The Steelers are favored by a touchdown at most PA online sportsbooks.

Public betting splits at DraftKings. The Pittsburgh Steelers have:

  • 71% of the point spread handle (-7).
  • 62% of the moneyline handle (-335).
  • A mixed bag when it comes to the over/under of 40.5: 62% of the bets placed are on the OVER. But 56% of the total handle is on the UNDER.

Denver Broncos vs. Pittsburgh Steelers betting stats and info

  • Eight of the Steelers’ last nine games have gone UNDER the total points line.
  • The Broncos have covered the spread in five of their last six games following a loss.
  • The spread opened with the Steelers as 5.5-point favorites, hit 7.5 and is now 7.

For Sunday’s games at FanDuel, popular plays include:

Kambi’s role in sports betting

Since processing the historic first legal online bet post-PASPA, Kambi has been studying its vast network data to build an early picture of the US sports bettor. In a webinar, Kambi presented some of its key findings, including data on wagering, in-play pick-up, the differences between the online and on-property players, and the most popular sports and markets.

Kambi CCO Max Meltzer commented:
Kambi’s high-quality network of US partners gives us valuable insight into the betting habits and behaviors of US players from state-to-state. Although the webinar takes into account data to June, we are continuously monitoring the information we receive to ensure our product is as good as it can be. For instance, just looking at data over the past two months we can see that the average online stake in Pennsylvania is roughly 10% larger than in neighboring New Jersey, and despite online in Pennsylvania being launched 10 months after New Jersey, the in-game to pregame wagers ratio is roughly the same.”

Let’s take a look at Kambi’s findings about sports bettors.

Basketball is most popular for new bettors

Basketball is the most popular sport for first-time bettors. This can be attributed to the number of games. NBA (82 regular-season games) and college basketball (35 games, plus the NCAA Tournament) have longer seasons in comparison to NFL (16 regular-season games) and college football (12 games).

Following basketball in popularity are:

  • Football
  • Hockey
  • Baseball
  • Soccer

New bettors not afraid to dive into live action, futures

A quarter of new players bet in-game right away.  Players are looking for an exceptional in-play offering when choosing an operator.

Additionally, bettors spread their cash on futures markets. One out of every four bettors wagering on teams to win the NBA Championship backed more than one team.

Kambi has even seen a player back as many as 23 teams to win the NBA Finals. Bettors are looking for a dynamic futures offering that is continually updated with the appropriate prices and odds. They also take advantage of the option to cash out futures bets and open new ones.

Bettors in the US raise the stakes more than UK counterparts

US bettors stake 41% more per wager than UK players. There are a few factors that may contribute to this, such as exchange rates or pregame buy-ins. Typically, US bettors don’t bet as much in-game as UK players.

The majority of bettors wager on other sports

Sixty-nine percent of bettors wager across five sports or more. Basketball, football, baseball, and hockey aren’t the only things that interest bettors. Based on the data Kambi’s collected, they have an appetite to wager on tennis, golf, and soccer.

Basketball and football are clear favorites for sports bettors. However, they enjoy soccer and tennis as much as hockey and baseball. Here are the most popular sports among sports bettors:

  • Basketball
  • Football
  • Baseball
  • Hockey
  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Golf
  • Boxing
  • UFC/MMA
  • Motorsports

Parlays are a popular play

The majority of US bettors have played parlays compared to the UK. Over 60% of US bettors played parlays, whereas just under 50% in the UK did. This goes against what industry experts say about US bettors only betting prematch or single wagers. Bettors want the ability to bet cross-sport or cross-player.

Betting doesn’t stop when the game starts

Two-thirds of bettors play in-game. Many experts suggested that bettors don’t wager in-game. However, it’s not the case. Kambi expects in-play wagering to grow. Over 70% of bets on tennis occur during matches. People are looking to bet outside the usual point spread and moneyline markets. They have an interest in betting on the next point in tennis or the next score in football. It presents a golden opportunity for operators to keep users engaged and in-app over the course of a game.

US bettors wager on more days than UK players. US bettors wager about every three days whereas UK bettors wager every four days. This affords operators the opportunity to have more touchpoints with bettors and attract them with more offers.

Bettors prefer kiosks to tellers

Bettors are foregoing face-to-face interaction for the familiar touchscreen. Seventy-five percent of on-property bets are placed at kiosks.

Kambi’s US Director Max Bichsel said:

“This enables them to go at their own pace and wager without the intimidation of having to interact with a teller which can be especially intimidating for a novice bettor.”

Kambi stressed that retail is still an important component in sports betting. Kiosks need to present the full offering available online for retail sportsbooks to remain competitive.

PA sportsbooks have Super Bowl props galore

The Super Bowl isn’t a popularity contest. If it were, it would be a matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and the New England Patriots.

According to Emory professor Michael Lewis, who ranked the NFL’s best fan bases on economic and marketing factors in a USA Today article, the Cowboys and the Pats are tops in terms of popularity. Pennsylvanians can take solace knowing the Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers cracked the top five.

Earning a spot in the Super Bowl takes more than a winning smile, a Miss America wave, or a rabid fan base.

Since the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs punched their tickets to Super LIV, public opinion became a factor at sportsbooks. Not just with which team garnered bettors’ favor, but what markets are popular.

At Pennsylvania online sportsbooks, the Chiefs are 1.5-point favorites. Point spread, moneyline, over/under, and alternate spreads are the top plays in any NFL game, including the Super Bowl.

Here is a breakdown of the most popular Super Bowl betting markets at some PA online betting apps.

PA sportsbooks take a hit on Super Bowl

The first Super Bowl Sunday with online sports betting in Pennsylvania resulted in a win for the Kansas Chiefs and a loss for operators.

Numbers released on Tuesday by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) revealed that PA sportsbooks took a $3.3 million loss as a result of the big game.

Bettors in PA wagered $30.7 million on Super Bowl LIV. Operators forked over about $34 million in payouts.

Super Bowl handle in PA

Last year, Pennsylvania only had six retail sportsbooks in operation during the Super Bowl and no mobile operators.

There were more options by kickoff of the 2019 NFL season, and its finale as the state now has eight online sportsbooks and 12 retail sportsbooks. A whopping 78% of wagers on the game were placed online, which is in tune with the monthly revenue numbers that show an overwhelming preference for mobile betting.

Additionally, the PGCB reports nearly 200,000 unique users logged on to PA online betting apps on Sunday. Previous NFL Sundays attracted closer to 100,000 unique visitors, so Super Bowl traffic was about double online.

Pennsylvania Super Bowl LIV handle and revenue:

  • Online Super Bowl handle: $24,035,942
  • Online Super Bowl revenue: ($2,840,675)
  • Retail Super Bowl handle: $6,728,544
  • Retail Super Bowl revenue: ($450,894)

How PA bet on Super Bowl LIV

At BetRivers Sportsbook, the Chiefs accounted for 70% of spread-ticket money. The Chiefs had 49% of the moneyline handle on Friday, but it jumped to 60% by kickoff.

At FanDuel as of Jan. 31, 53% of the moneyline handle was on the Chiefs in Pennsylvania.

More details on how PA bettors fared on the big game is available at our Playin Pennsylvania Super Bowl betting recap.

New Jersey second Super loss

For the second year in a row, New Jersey operators took a loss on Super Bowl Sunday. In NJ, $54.2 million was wagered and sportsbooks paid out $58.5 million. It resulted in a loss of $4.28 million, slightly less of a hit than last year’s $4.5 million loss.

Nevada fell just short of last year’s record. However, Nevada led all states in terms of Super Bowl handle with $154.7 million. It was one of the few states with a positive hold (12.1%) or $18.8 million in revenue.

The total was just short of 2018’s record of $156.8 million.

While many books took a hit on one of the biggest wagering events of the year, there will be plenty of opportunities for operators to rebound. DraftKings is running a Daily Double Up promo in PA for the week after Super Bowl, and with March Madness and Kentucky Derby around the corner, more betting action awaits.

Parx Sportsbook kiosks

Minutes before its temporary sportsbook opened Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles were the hot topic of the Parx Casino Sportsbook conversation.

Yes, they’re playing the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, with the winner moving on to the NFC Championship Game. Now, thanks to this new space located in the former 360 Lounge, fans can add some sports betting action to the fun. Yes, money on the Eagles seemed to be the theme of the day, but there was plenty of other excitement too.

After all, the bigger news of the day was that Parx successfully completed the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board’s (PGCB)two-day testing period. As of Thursday afternoon, the Parx Sportsbook is fully operational.

From Matthew Cullen, senior vice president of interactive gaming and sports at Parx Casino:

“We are super excited about finally opening. It’s been a lot of work to get to this point. The test period was nearly flawless, that’s why we are open right now.”

Parx Sportsbook layout

The current Parx Sportsbook layout is a teaser for something much bigger and more expensive to come. The $10 million, 10,000-square- foot permanent space is set for a summer opening. For now, here is what the Parx Sportsbook has to offer:

  • 20 HD television screens of various sizes
  • Two 16-by-9-foot screens that can be split into four
  • Up to 28 games shown at once
  • Seven live teller windows
  • 45 self-service sports betting kiosks
  • Full-service bar
  • Comfortable seating

Betting hours

  • Monday: 1 p.m.-12 a.m.
  • Tuesday-Friday: 1 p.m.-1 a.m.
  • Saturday: 9 a.m.-1 a.m.
  • Sunday: 9 a.m.-12 a.m.

Parx + Kambi

Parx is the latest casino to make use of the sports betting technology software from European-based KambiSugarHouse Casinoin Philadelphia, and Rivers Sportsbookin Pittsburgh, are doing the same. The industry-leading DraftKings Sportsbook, at Resorts Atlantic City, does the same.

One of the significant differences with Parx is Betslip Builder. This sports betting app enables players to fill out their bet slip when on the move and streamlines the betting process via a QR code. It is accessible on desktop computers as well.

But the temporary sportsbook and the bet slip app are just part of the initial phase of the Parx-Kambi plan.

More sports betting plans

The focus now shifts to launching Kambi-powered sportsbooks at the South Philadelphia Turf Club and Valley Forge Turf Club. Like Parx, both are owned by Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment. The former, located footsteps away from where the Philadelphia EaglesSixersFlyers and Phillies play their home games, could go through regulatory testing as soon as next week.

A Parx-branded online sportsbook is coming, too. The exact date for Pennsylvania online gambling is to be determined.

Max Meltzer, Kambi chief commercial officer for Kambi, offered his thoughts:

“We’re very excited to have launched our on-property sportsbook at Parx Casino, a brand which shares our commitment to providing unique and exciting wagering experiences to players.

“Today’s unveiling marks Kambi’s fourth brick-and-mortar sportsbook launch in less than three months and cements our position as the leading online and on-property sportsbook supplier in the burgeoning US market.”

Setting the sports betting lines

The Rivers and SugarHouse sportsbooks, along with the SugarHouse sports betting app in New Jersey, share the same betting lines. Parx and Kambi are working together on setting the odds at Pennsylvania’s fourth sportsbook.

Cullen says it’s a coordinated effort between the two companies.

“My team here upstairs, they work very closely with Kambi to set those lines and to adjust things based on what’s happening in the games themselves, as well as prior to the game starting.”

Eagles are the talk of sports betting

Being that Bensalem is located just outside of Philadelphia, there was no doubt about the first official bet. There were actually two: $50 straight up on the Eagles to beat the Saints, and $50 on the Eagles with the points.

If the Eagles win and head to the NFC Championship Game, the Parx Sportsbook is guaranteed another weekend of substantial business.

Of course, there is always a but:

“It could adversely affect business as well if they cover the spread because there is going to be a lot of money on the Eagles, for sure,” Cullen said.

NFL Divisional Playoff Turf

The NFL playoffs continue with the divisional round this weekend and the list of places Pennsylvanians can bet on the games is a growing one.

Of course, there is a ton of local interest in the games with the dream of back-to-back Super Bowl wins still alive for the Philadelphia Eagles, one of eight teams playing this weekend. This weekend’s four games will decide who moves on to the AFC and NFC Championship games. The games are:

  • Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs (Jan. 12)
  • Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams (Jan. 12)
  • Los Angeles Chargers at New England Patriots (Jan. 13)
  • Philadelphia Eagles at New Orleans Saints (Jan. 13)

Legal PA sports betting launched in November 2018. There are now four retail sportsbooks open across the state offering various lines on NFL playoff games:

Plus, Harrah’s Philadelphia in Chester is planning to launch a sportsbook of its own sometime in January. Additionally, Valley Forge Casino Resort in King of Prussia will follow suit in March with partner FanDuel.

You can check each of the retail sportsbooks’ lines online, that way you know what is being offered before you get there.

Online and mobile sports betting

Online and mobile sports betting has yet to launch in PA. However, Pennsylvanians are free to download mobile sports betting apps from New Jersey and use them to bet on the games once they are across the state line. The NJ apps use geolocation software to make sure all bets are made inside New Jersey. However, you can always check the lines from inside PA.

There are there are currently eight NJ online and mobile sports betting operations offering lines on NFL playoff games. These are:

  • DraftKings Sportsbook
  • FanDuel Sportsbook
  • William Hill
  • 888 sportsbook
  • playMGM
  • Caesars
  • BetStars
  • PlaySugarHouse

Since several of these apps are powered by the same Kambi and William Hill software the four retail sports betting operations in PA are, players should find similar lines on the NFL playoff games among them all. However, it’s always a good idea to shop around.

How to bet on the NFL playoffs

Of course, knowing where to bet is only half the battle. You’ve also got to know how to bet on NFL playoff games.

However, PA sportsbooks and NJ online and mobile sports betting apps offer a series of simple and easy ways to get on on the NFL playoff action. These basic bets include:

  • Moneylines
  • Point spreads
  • Over/unders

Moneylines and point spreads

Moneyline bets are as easy as it gets. All you have to do is pick the outright winner of the game. The bets then pay according to a team’s probability of winning.

Moneyline odds are expressed as either a positive (+) or negative (-) number. A negative number means that team is the favorite. The number negative represents the amount you’ll need to bet to win $100 plus your bet back. Positive numbers are for underdogs and represent how much a $100 bet can win.

Most PA sportsbooks will have the Saints as the heavy moneyline favorite over the Eagles. The line should hover somewhere around Eagles +330 and Saints -400. That means a $100 bet on the Eagles will win $330 plus your bet back. Or, you’ll have to bet $400 on the Saints just to win $100 and your bet back.

Point spread bets are almost as simple. These bets require you to pick the winner of the game with a line set by oddsmakers factored in.

Most PA sportsbooks will have the Saints (-8) as about an eight-point favorite over the Eagles (+8). That means the Saints need to win by nine or more for Saints point spread bets to pay off. If the Eagles win, or the Saints win by seven or less, Eagles point spread bets pay. All point spread bets booked at eight points are a push if the Saints win by exactly eight points.

Of course, these lines can and will move throughout the week based on how much is being bet on either side.

Over/under, parlays, futures and advanced NFL betting

Finally, the third basic bet on NFL playoff games at PA sportsbooks is the over/under. These bets require you to choose whether the total points scored by both teams in the game will be over or under a number set by oddsmakers. It really is that simple.

PA sportsbooks will likely set the over/under at around 55 points for Eagles-Saints.

Of course, you can always combine two or more of these basic bets for any of the NFL Divisional Round playoff games to create a parlay. Parlays pay better than single-game bets. However, the trick is you have to win all the bets that are part of your parlay for it to pay.

If you want to go beyond the basics, most PA sportsbooks will also offer a variety of advanced betting options on the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs.

This might include first and second half point spread bets or single team over/unders. It will almost certainly also include NFL futures, allowing you to pick a team now that you think will win the NFC and AFC championship or the Super Bowl.

Most PA sportsbooks will also offer live in-play betting on NFL playoff games. This allows anyone watching games at a sportsbook to make in-play point spread and moneyline bets with changing odds as the action continues.

Finally, a number of PA sportsbooks will also offer proposition bets on NFL playoff games. These propositions allow you to bet on things like who will score first, or which team or individual player will lead the game in rushing yards.

Presque Isle Downs Cuts 2021 Racing Days

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission agreed this week to a nearly 50% reduction in planned 2021 racing dates at Presque Isle Downs. That will mean just 52 racing days, down from the originally proposed 100.

According to Todd Mostoller, the Erie track’s horsemen leader, the reason is “Casino slot revenue has not recovered.” He is of course referring to months of virus-caused casino shutdowns that lifted in early January, and continued limited capacity restrictions.

Presque Isle meet pushed back until July

Originally set to resume racing in May, the track’s trimmed meet will now not begin until July 5.

Mostoller, executive director of the Pennsylvania Horsemen’s Benevolent Association, which represents horsemen’s interests at both Presque Isle and Penn National’s track, first raised the prospect of a reduced meet in a Jan. 28 tweet to his members.

The tweet cautioned:

“As the pandemic continues, it is very difficult — if not impossible — to project purse revenue resulting from slot revenue. We expect to conduct 50 days of racing. We will add days at the end of the meet if purse revenues exceed expectations. Bottom line: We will run as many days as the purse account can support.

Back-to-back reduced schedules for Presque Isle Downs

A 52-day meet for Presque Isle Downs was approved by the race commission this week.

The track owned by Churchill Downs also hosted just 50 race dates in 2020, half the 100 dates originally planned.

A dramatic decline in slot revenue cited

Mostoller told the racing commission on Tuesday that the typical horse racing set-aside from Erie’s Presque Isle Casino land-based slot revenue – tracks get about 10% of the retail slot revenue – was typically between $240,000 and $260,000 a week.

He added that the amount of casino revenue filtered toward racing purses was just $522 for the entire month of January at the small casino in the northwest corner of the Keystone State.

He cautioned during the commission meeting that a reduction in race days could also come eventually at Penn National. Still, revenue figures there were not yet clear enough to make a call.

Balance purse level to assure interest of bettors

Pete Peterson of the Pennsylvania Equine Coalition said low purses mean less interest from horse bettors and a lower quality field of horses on tracks.

Financial support from casino-based slot machines pays for between 95% and 98% of the purses paid at PA tracks. That’s part of the 2004 deal which ushered in casinos in PA.

Less slot revenue support means less horse racing, added Peterson.

Despite the pandemic pressures, Peterson said recent sampling had shown a year-over-year uptick of interest in racing. And an increase in wagering across the board.

PA man wins $2 million in MD for Jan. 20 drawing

They say “third time’s a charm” and that certainly is the case here where a PA resident from Pittsburgh made a trip to the Maryland Lottery to claim a $2 million Powerball ticket from the Jan. 20 drawing.

Unfortunately, the severe winter weather and storms kept the winner from making the trip to Baltimore twice to claim his prize. However, his third trip was a success, so he dubbed himself ‘Third Time’s the Charm” for claiming his prize.

Overall, the winner stated “I’m looking forward to a nap and paying off some bills” as he no longer has to worry about the physical possession of the ticket.

No need for physical tickets for online lottery play

There’s good news for Pennsylvania players because you can buy lottery tickets through the PA online lottery. Best of all, you receive automatic notifications if any of your tickets are winners. Then, your winnings are available in your player account.

There are also other states that offer online lottery sales as well:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Keep gambling fun, please play responsibly.
