Less interest in lottery tickets after jackpots hit

Historically speaking, there is less interest in draw lottery game jackpots, such as the Mega Millions, after a sizable jackpot hits. Certainly, this trend applies to tonight’s Mega Millions jackpot drawing.

To begin with, the last drawing on Friday, Feb. 19, the jackpot reset to $20 million. Nationwide, no ticket matched five white balls for the second-place prize. Only four third-place tickets were sold matching four white balls and the gold Mega Ball.

However, most telling of all, the estimated jackpot for tonight’s drawing only grew by $2 million. Definitely, the small increase to the jackpot indicates lower sales following a large jackpot.

Try out online lottery tickets

Meanwhile, just because interest is waning for now means that it may be time to try something new. The PA online lottery does more than just offer a way to buy lottery tickets online. New players can receive a welcome bonus, fun promotions plus play other lottery games.

And there other states that allow online lottery tickets as well:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New York

Remember to always play responsibly.

Steelers 2022 Super Bowl Odds Not Optimistic

The franchise is at a crossroads.

Ben Roethlisberger’s contract is expensive. The star quarterback is past his prime and on the verge of retirement. Center Maurkice Pouncey, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, just retired himself.

So even though the Pittsburgh Steelers have a talented roster, with a defense that is among the best in the league, it’s hard to tell which direction next season will go.

Perhaps it makes sense to examine the odds and see what PA online sportsbooks think.

DraftKings has the Steelers at +3000 in Super Bowl odds

Oddsmakers expect that the Steelers might be flirting with mediocrity next season. DraftKings Sportsbook has them at +3000 to win the next Super Bowl, a number that puts them tied for 15th (with the LA Chargers).

The Steelers are tied for 8th in odds to win the AFC at +1400 and third at +375 to win the AFC North ahead of only the Bengals.

The optimism Pittsburgh generated with its undefeated start last fall seems to have dwindled ever since. Even the biggest source of offseason buzz, the possibility of signing free agent J.J. Watt to join his two other brothers in Pittsburgh (T.J. and Derek), seems to be in serious jeopardy.

Rumors on Twitter suggested that AFC North rival Cleveland is the frontrunner for him. And the odds at FanDuel Colorado support it. Cleveland is -150 to sign Watt. The Green Bay Packers are next at +195 followed by the Bills (+300). Pittsburgh is fourth in line at +400.

So help might not be on the way. But those willing to risk a futures ticket on the Steelers certainly have some evidence to support their cause.

A case for the glass being half full

For starters, Pittsburgh went 11-0 to start last season and still earned a playoff berth despite a slew of injuries on defense. T.J. Watt, who led the NFL in sacks, QB hits, and tackles for loss, will be back. Free agent Bud Dupree, the other defensive end opposite Watt, might also return if the Steelers can work some magic with a salary cap that they are expected to be well over.

And Roethlisberger will also be under center again. Big Ben will turn 39 in March, but he is still above average as a quarterback, good enough to win games with a strong defense behind him. In addition, the Steelers signed former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins as a back-up, giving the team some better depth behind the veteran signal caller.

So if you’re bold enough to take the Steelers on a futures wager, you have at least a few things to bolster your argument.

During the offseason, futures odds will fluctuate as free agent signings and draft picks alter each team’s roster.

The Chiefs are expected to redeem themselves next season

Beyond Pittsburgh, the NFL futures board has a familiar team up top. The Kansas City Chiefs, who just got shellacked in this season’s Super Bowl, are the favorites to win next year’s championship at +525. The defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers are next at +900, followed by the Green Bay Packers at +1000, and the Buffalo Bills at +1200.

Philadelphia fans will find their beloved Eagles much farther down at +6000.

So despite a number of pressing questions, things could always be worse for the Steelers.

Maybe the team is at a crossroads.

But the final destination hasn’t been determined just yet.

PA sports betting back in full swing

Sports — and sports betting — are back in Pennsylvania.

The fullest slate of sports since March, many with PA teams, was in the news this past week. PA teams are also the focus of a new Pennsylvania Lottery venture involving the Steelers and Eagles.

DraftKings is sweetening the deal on PGA Championship betting this weekend.

The Penguins, Flyers, Sixers and the Phillies and Pirates are all back and attracting bettors. Unfortunately, the Philadelphia Union soccer team lost its bid for the finals.

And finally, the PA online casino market in PA grows by one with a Wind Creek online casino launch.

PA sports betting is back in a big way

Sports’ alliances with gambling continue. The PA Lottery has launched a Second-Chance drawing, valid through Oct. 8. Nonwinning $5 Eagles and Steelers Fast Play tickets can score lottery players tickets into drawings for coveted PA NFL-related prizes.

DraftKings is offering a bet boost for the PGA Championship, increasing profits up to 50% in the first round and 30% after that. Other PA online sportsbooks are also offering promotions.

The Pens are locked in a deathmatch to move forward in pursuit of the Stanley Cup against the Canadiens. They must win Friday. The consolation prize is the chance for a better pick in the draft lottery. FOX Bet Sportsbook has some nice bet boosts for the game.

Meanwhile, the Flyers are a betting fave at DraftKings.

The Phillies are struggling to get their games in amid virus disruptions and returned to the field as underdogs facing a rough schedule.

The 76ers are No. 2 in handle and No. 2 in total bets in the NBA Championship market. They have accounted for more than 25% of bets in the outright market. It makes them a big liability for the FanDuel book.

Wind Creek joins the PA iGaming fray

Wind Creek launched its online casino in late July with 77 slot titles, making it the 10th player in the PA market.

Cordish (Live!), Golden Nugget and BetMGM are still in the wings.

Cordish is still building two casinos, but plans to launch online very soon. And it also plans to bid on an available mini-casino license on Sept. 2.

MGM and Nugget will offer iGaming, untethered to a PA gambling facility.

Online casino and poker stay hot in PA through June

Land-based closures for pandemic precautions in mid-March accelerated legal online gambling traffic and revenue. In Pennsylvania, it has translated into record numbers for the state’s 10 online casinos.

The reopening of most PA land-based casinos in June — all at 50% capacity — had little effect on online gaming numbers. June iGaming revenue totaled $50 million (down slightly from an all-time-high $55.8 million in May). In June, $3.2 million in iGaming revenue came from online poker.

Looking at slots and table games alone, revenue was $46.8 million, with $21.5 million going to state and local taxes. While a slight dip from their May peak, both remained around three-times their pre-pandemic levels.

Total wagers for online slots in PA surpassed $1 billion for the second month in a row — more than double pre-pandemic play.

Meanwhile, the market continues to mature, adding new casinos and products along the way. PA has seen new operators and new apps, with plenty more to come.

June numbers: PA online casino still flying high

Slot revenue in June was $36.8 million, down just $2 million from May. Table games saw a relatively greater decline, going from $12.4 million in May to $10.0 million in June. Total play in June was still on par with May’s astronomical number.

Here’s a look at the total play, revenue and taxes from PA online slots and table games from January through June.

JuneMayAprilMarchFebruaryJanuary
Total Play$1.7 billion$1.8 billion$1.4 billion$871.6 million$703.6 million$466.8 million
Revenue$46.8 million$51.2 million$37.8 million$21.1 million$17.7 million$11.8 million
Tax Revenue$21.5 million$23.2 million$16.5 million$8.1 million$6.5 million$4.6 million

Top PA online casino operators, new iGaming developments

The online casino market in Pennsylvania continues to flourish in 2020, now with 10 online casinos to choose from. The first operator launched in July 2019. For the fiscal year 2019/20 (July 1-June 30), the first full year with iGaming live in PA, online gambling yielded almost $240.9 million in revenue.

Looking at June, the same heavy hitters remain on top, accounting for the majority of iGaming play. Those operators include Rivers Philadelphia, Penn National, Valley Forge and Parx.

Rivers Philadelphia is the land-based partner for both BetRivers and PlaySugarHouse online casinos, which will soon merge under the BetRivers brand. Penn National strengthened its iGaming portfolio with the DraftKings Casino launch on May 1. Penn now offers both a Hollywood Casino and DraftKings Casino app in PA.

Casino OperatorTotal RevenueSlots RevenueTable Games Revenue
Rivers Philly* (SugarHouse & BetRivers)$15.0 million$13.3 million$1.7 million
Penn National* (Hollywood & DraftKings)$9.6 million$7.7 million$1.8 million
Valley Forge (FanDuel)$7.8 million$4.6 million$3.2 million
Parx Casino$6.2 million$5.0 million$1.2 million
Mt. Airy (PokerStars & FOXBet)$4.5 million$2.7 million$1.8 million
Mohegan Sun Pocono (Unibet)$2.5 million$2.2 million$377,000
Harrah’s Philly (Caesars)$761,000$742,000$18,000
Presque Isle Downs (BetAmerica)$498,000$504,000-$7,000
Totals:$46.8 million$36.8 million$10.0 million

Where do we go from here?

The Pennsylvania iGaming market has demonstrated a strong aptitude for growth. And clearly, the appetite for new products and competition abounds.

Most recently, FanDuel and DraftKings launched stand-alone casino apps in Pennsylvania (and before that, in NJ). The pair continue to branch out from their fantasy roots. With most of their traditional customers derived from DFS and sports betting, FanDuel and DraftKings are demonstrating a commitment to serving an ever-expanding client base.

Jesse Chemtob, general manager of FanDuel Casino, told Playin Pennsylvania following FanDuel’s app launch:

“We are happy with the results so far, but there is a larger market rather than just sports bettors or table games players … There is a much bigger online casino market we are trying to tap into. We want to offer a product to those players who are looking for a bit of a different experience than what you might find within a sportsbook app.”

Meanwhile, slot libraries and online table games options continue to grow, with some approaching New Jersey-like levels. And DraftKings announced in its Tuesday presser that it’ll soon launch Live Dealer games in PA, which could be a real game-changer.

While extremely popular in New Jersey, live dealer products have yet to launch in the Keystone State, given the PA requirement for separate in-state servers. That means operators with products in both NJ and PA can’t just use their already-established servers in the Garden State.

Get ready for poker expansion in PA

In June, PokerStars PA revenue figures dropped back down to earth from the record $5.3 million and $4.6 million earned in April and May, respectively. But June’s $3.2 million revenue was still its third-best since launching in November 2019.

PokerStars was the early bird in PA, and it has reaped the benefits. But the PokerStars PA lone reign will soon come to an end as multiple other operators move to get regulatory approval to launch. Among them are partypoker, which could be up for approval as soon as Aug. 5, and WSOP.com.

Generally, iGaming products in PA are attached to a land-based casino, as PokerStars is partnered with Mount Airy Casino and WSOP.com is an arm of Harrah’s Casino Philadelphia. That will not be the case for GVC’s partypoker brand, now under the MGM/GVC online gambling umbrella ROAR Digital.

BetMGM is one of two qualified gaming entities (QGEs) licensed to operate iGaming products in PA, pending Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approval. The other is Golden Nugget, which holds licenses for slots and table games but not poker.

If the complete land-based casino shutdown for three-plus months has taught us anything, it’s that legal online gambling is here to stay. In Pennsylvania, the growth phase continues.

What We Love and Don't Love about PA Betting Apps

“We love to expect, and when expectation is either disappointed or gratified, we want to be again expecting.”

— Samuel Johnson, 18th-century English writer

Three hundred years later, Samuel — aka Dr. — Johnson’s quote holds true for something he couldn’t have fathomed: iGaming and online sports betting. When they arrived in Pennsylvania during the summer of 2019, many players were full of anticipation. But when the bloom fell off the rose, disappointment started to creep in due to some unmet expectations.

Valentine’s Day can cause a range of reactions, from “Down with this fake Hallmark holiday” to “The rose petals lead to a Tiffany box next to plane tickets to our weekend getaway.”

Feb. 14 got us thinking about what we love and what we expect more from when it comes to online casinos and sportsbooks in Pennsylvania.

Just as there are particular must-haves when looking for a significant other, there are certain baseline expectations we have for our iGaming options. Some of the must-haves are:

  • User-friendly navigation
  • Various options for depositing funds
  • Fast and easy withdraws
  • Responsive customer service

Things we love about PA online casinos and sportsbooks

It’s convenient

In some states, you have to register in person to use a mobile sportsbook app. That was never the case in PA. The convenience of signing up and betting from your couch can’t be overstated. It wasn’t too long ago I had to drive to Delaware to bet parlays. It’s a thought that makes me shudder more than the thought of some of my exes.

Same goes for online casinos. The fact that you don’t have to leave your house/get dressed/drive/park is the No. 1 reason many love iGaming.

Deep-dive info

I’m not a player, I just crush a lot (of research). Everyone has their system that they use to determine how and what to place their bets on. DraftKings has a trove of information inside the app. Select a game, then tap “stats.” There, you will find things like:

  • Betting trends
  • Matchup stats
  • Best value player props
  • Spread/total movement
  • ATS record and over/under record
  • Implied win probability

Live Dealer without leaving home

If you are looking for the “real thing,” this is the closest you will get to being at a casino without leaving your home. Judging by the number of you who slid into my DMs with questions like “Where is live dealer?” and “Why no live dealer yet?” it is a much-anticipated, welcome addition to the PA iGaming scene.

If playing against an RNG (random number generator) is getting to be a bit vanilla, or if you simply want to interact/play against a human, live dealer games are likely a good match.

Live betting

My love for live betting grew out of my hate for the 2020 Philadelphia Phillies bullpen. It only took a few foiled pregame bets for me to learn my lesson about the 2020 Phillies (I am not a sharp bettor, so do not take my advice on betting — or relationships). When the Phillies pulled their starter with the lead and went to their awful bullpen, I logged in to access the current price of the opposing team. Then I would bet against the Phillies.

With live betting, if you miss placing your bet before the start of the game, it doesn’t mean you are shut out of the action. There are still ways to bet point spreads, alternative point spreads, moneylines and totals.

Promos for current users

You went all-out to woo me with new customer offers and match play, but now that you’ve got me, what are you doing to do to keep me happy? Promotions for current users remind me why I chose you and reinforce that decision.

Certain things, like FanDuel’s “Spread the Love” and DraftKings’s “No-Brainer Bet,” although they come with max bet limits, are basically free money for current users.

Things that we have higher expectations for

No lag/no crashes during peak times

Sometimes I don’t like to take things slow, especially when it comes to a sports betting app. There were times on NFL Sundays when certain apps seemed to lag. Maybe it was just me and my high expectations for super-fast speeds. But during Championship Sunday, FanDuel was down for a few hours. Then various apps were hit with outages in the hours leading up to kickoff on Super Bowl Sunday.

These issues nix the convenience factor and up the aggravation. Being greeted with an error message each time you log in is frustrating and can make anyone fall out of love real quick. It also raises some red flags in terms of trust. If you can’t be there during the big moments, why should I choose you to place my bets?

Bigger libraries for online casinos

Size does matter. No one wants a small … selection of games. When it comes to online casinos, Pennsylvania has some serious size envy. Online casinos in New Jersey like Golden Nugget have over 800 slot titles. On average, at NJ online casinos, there are about 400 titles to choose from. PA’s online casinos aren’t nearly as well endowed. The biggest online casinos only have about 120 slots.

More live poker options

Love is patient, but for poker lovers in PA, the wait for operator No. 2 has gone on long enough. Since the debut of PokerStars PA in November 2019 — more than 14 months ago — all the hints of a second operator have turned out to be a tease.

WSOP.com and partypoker are the most likely front-runners for launching this year, and the state has a new suitor. GGpoker’s parent company NSUS just got an initial manufacturer license in PA, an important first step for entering the U.S. market.

Still, when it comes to current online poker options in the Keystone State, a glance next door to New Jersey can instill some pretty intense feelings of jealousy.

Lower vig

A #relationshipgoal may be a 50/50 split of chores. But that isn’t the case with sportsbooks and their customers. The book gets a cut of the action — the “juice” or “vig.” In Pennsylvania, if you take the time to look, you might find some at -107 instead of the standard -110.

We have to admit we had a case of wandering eyes when PointsBet was promoting no juice during Wild Card Weekend. But since PointsBet isn’t in PA, it was just a case of coveting thy neighbor’s sportsbook.

Don’t be so needy

This is likely a security feature, but when I put down the app for a minute or two, it automatically logs me out. When I try to get back in, it acts like, “New number, who this?”

There. Doesn’t it feel so good to talk about it and get it all out in the open?

legs going up stairs

MGM Resorts and Golden Nugget Atlantic City are not PA online casino providers yet. They are getting closer to the finish line though.

During Wednesday’s PA Gaming Control Board (PGCB) meeting, Executive Director Kevin O’Toole told the board that the two applicants for qualified gaming entities (QGEs) satisfied the requirements to become QGEs.

Next MGM and Golden Nugget apply for interactive licenses

What does this mean for the two companies?

What QGE status does is give them the ability to apply for remaining interactive licenses. Since there are only two, the auction of license step is not necessary.

MGM will apply for all three: table games, slots and online poker. Golden Nugget will only seek table games and slots.

In order to get the licenses, the two companies will put together the same applications as the PA casinos seeking those licenses submitted.

It is highly unlikely PGCB does not approve the applications once complete. Not one of the 10 casinos seeking licenses ran into trouble. In fact, given that both New Jersey companies already have operational online casinos in the Garden State, their ability to perform is even clearer.

Earliest PGCB will hear applications is February

The next PGCB meeting is Feb. 6. That is the earliest MGM or Golden Nugget can present their applications to the board. It is possible the companies were expecting approval and already are getting their ducks in a row. However, most PA groups needed a couple of months to complete the application.

Additionally, PGCB is pretty busy with rollouts of VGTs as well as sportsbook and online casinos. There is only so much room on the calendar in a given meeting, which could push things back.

No PA casinos showing any signs of launching soon

The good news for MGM and Golden Nugget is that no one seems to be launching online casinos in the near future.

It is looking more and more like online casinos will not go live until spring. If that is the case, the NJ companies will not have much ground to make up on the in-state competition.

A reminder though that one thing neither of these companies will be able to compete with is sports betting. That is one form of online gambling QGEs are allowed to pursue on their own.

$2 million Match 5 Power Play sold in PA

While no one won the big Powerball jackpot for the last drawing on Wednesday, Feb. 17, there is one big second-place Pennsylvania winner. As a recap, the winning numbers for this past drawing were 1 – 15 – 21 – 32 – 46 with a red Powerball of 1.

A second-place prize means that the ticket matches all five white balls drawn. Typically, that prize is worth $1 million.

However, in this case, the lucky PA winner added on the $1 Power Play option. Therefore, the lucky winning ticket is worth $2 million. Unfortunately, the PA Lottery has not yet released any further details yet about where the winner was sold.

Buy last-minute Powerball tickets online

Okay, so not quite last-minute, but pretty close. Here in Pennsylvania, the PA online lottery gives you the option to buy your tickets online. Moreover, Powerball tickets are sold in PA until 9:59 pm ET on drawing nights, which are Wednesday and Saturday. So, if you are ever cutting it close, try buying your draw tickets online safely, securely and most importantly, quickly.

Finally, there are other states that offer online lottery ticket sales as well:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

In PA, you must be 18 years or older at the time of play. Please play responsibly.

$96 million jackpot winning ticket sold in NY

The last drawing for Mega Millions took place on Tuesday, Feb. 16 with winning numbers of 1 – 36 – 44 – 54 – 66 with a gold Mega Ball of 10. While the jackpot did not quite hit the $100 million mark, a lucky winner from NY claimed the whole jackpot by matching all six numbers.

The winner was sold at Kinney Drugs located at 2 Preston St. in Camden, NY. Should the winner choose the one-time cash payout option, the prize is $68.5 million before taxes.

Also, there was a second-place prize that matched all five white balls drawn in California. Therefore, tonight’s drawing for the Mega Millions resets the jackpot back to $20 million.

The PA Lottery should finish the fiscal year with sales “somewhere north of $5 billion” – the highest ever in its 50-year history – executive director Drew Svitko told lawmakers during the Department of Revenue budget hearing earlier this week.

The previous record was 2018-19 – well before the virus pandemic – with $4.5 billion in sales.

Scratch-off ticket sales are up 24% so far this year, lawmakers learned.

Probable record year for lottery

According to the lottery’s own financial statement, online lottery offerings had sales topping $433.7 million for the first six months of the fiscal year (ending December). That is well ahead of the $290.2 million for the same period during the prior year.

A net profit of $1.24 billion to benefit Pennsylvania seniors is a possibility.

Keno off due to pandemic

Keno sales are, however, decidedly off. At the end of December, sales totaled just $18.9 million.

That’s down from nearly $30 million during that same time period a year before. Most Keno sales are in restaurants and bars, businesses hard hit by the virus.

Unregulated gaming devices cited as a threat to lottery

Despite the lottery’s otherwise strong performance during COVID-19 restrictions, Svitko claimed the lottery’s future well-being and ability to fund programs for seniors remains threatened by unregulated gambling devices.

The machines are generically referred to as games of skill and are increasingly prevalent across PA.

That’s a threat he had cautioned about a year ago, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette pointed out.

PA Lottery outlets have increasing competition

Svitko claimed 28% of lottery retailers have at least one gambling device. Last year it was just 8%. He sees the machines as unfair and unregulated competition for lottery players’ money.

“I think the increase of gaming in the marketplace is dangerous and risky and again, you know, harmful in the long run to us and our mission of generating money for those important programs,” Svitko told the Post-Gazette.

Penn Live reported Svitko told lawmakers skill games could lead to a $200 million decline in scratch-off ticket sales this year. He had claimed a $115 million hit last year due to the devices.

Some lawmakers pushback

Svitko got pushback from some legislators because of the banner sales year. Plus the revenue lawmakers pointed to for service organizations depending on a revenue stream from the machines.

The ultimate legality of these games of skill remains undetermined, with neither court nor legislative decisions decided.

While the PA State Police and the state’s Gaming Control Board have called the machines illegal, the state’s Attorney General Josh Shapiro has held off on enforcement, awaiting judicial or lawmaker actions.

Despite that, according to Penn Live, Svitko urged lawmakers to hold off.

“I think regulating is a risky endeavor because there is a lot of gaming in Pennsylvania and I’m talking about the legal options right now. They haven’t all been rolled out yet.”

Competing regulatory legislative schemes – from bans to widespread legalization – have floated around without any path attracting clear consensus support. And a legal case remains pending.

Online Powerball tickets

In Pennsylvania, you can buy Powerball tickets online. In fact, the PA online lottery offers a quick and convenient option to skip waiting in physical retailer lines. Online PA lottery players can easily use a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device.

Moreover, there is a welcome bonus and daily promotions. Finally, receive automatic notification for winning tickets.

Also, PA is not the only state that allows online lottery sales:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Each state lottery benefits different program. Here in the Keystone State, the PA Lottery benefits older Pennsylvanians. Yet, just because you win a large jackpot does not mean you are free from issues.

Former Powerball jackpot winner sued by ex-fiancé

Out of North Carolina, WECT reports that a woman who won a $188 million jackpot in Feb. 2015 is being sued by her ex-fiancé. Overall, it appears that there are some sour feelings left as her Ex is currently incarcerated and seeking compensation.

Previously, Marie Holmes opted to take a lump sum payment and after taxes received about $88 million. At the time, Holmes was dating Lamar McDow. Although McDow was technically on parole at the time awaiting drug trafficking charges, Holmes apparently lavished him with expensive gifts and an automotive repair business.

Now, the lawsuit alleges that Holmes gave away McDow’s personal property, clothes and sold his businesses without his authorization. On top of the property claims, McDow is seeking punitive damages.
