Denny Hamlin Looks to Repeat at Daytona 500

One Super Bowl was held last week.

Another one arrives on Sunday.

Unlike some other sports, NASCAR’s biggest event is arguably the first one, when drivers descend on auto racing’s most storied track for the Daytona 500. The race will be broadcast at 2:30 p.m. Sunday on Fox.

It’s a supercharged kickoff for the season, with all kinds of excitement, pageantry and betting mixing together to help us forget about football.

In this year’s event, Denny Hamlin is the favorite at +800 according to DraftKings Sportsbook. And one bettor has wagered $1,000 bucks on Bubba Wallace, giving him a chance at a $21,000 payout if Wallace captures the checkered flag.

But there’s a lot more available than just those bets. Let’s take a look at some of the NASCAR odds available at PA betting apps to get you ready for Sunday’s race.

Can he win again? Hamlin looks for third straight Daytona 500 win

Hamlin is the Daytona 500 favorite following two straight wins at Daytona in 2019 and 2020. He also has a win there in 2016, so a win Sunday would give him four total, tying Cale Yarborough for the second-most victories in this event. “The King” Richard Petty has the record with seven.

Hamlin is +800 at DraftKings Sportsbook and is drawing 15% of the wagers and 18% of the handle at DraftKings. Trailing him are Chase Elliott (+1000), Ryan Blaney (+1200), Joey Logano (+1200) and Kyle Busch (+1400). The rest of the top 10 follows:

  • Kevin Harvick: +1400
  • Brad Keselowski: +1400
  • Aric Almirola: +1600
  • Kyle Larson: +1600
  • Alex Bowman/William Byron/Martin Truex Jr.: +1800

The betting splits at DraftKings Sportsbook are available on the chart below.

Can Denny Do It Again? Daytona 500 Hits the Track Sunday With Hamlin Favored to Win 2

DraftKings has pricing posted on the entire field and for top three finishes as well, giving bettors numerous options for Sunday’s race. There’s also a free-to-play $5K Daytona 500 pool with over 15,000 entrants and counting.

Interest high for Daytona 500

And over at William Hill, a few notable wagers have already been placed. A $3,000 bet has been placed on Byron at 17/1 (for a $54,000 total potential payout), Truex Jr. at 18/1 (for a $57,000 total potential payout) and Almirola at 18/1 (for a $57,000 total potential payout), promising plenty of excitement for whoever is holding those tickets.

Beyond those bets, the wagers have been steady for the entire field.

“Daytona 500 is our biggest handle for any NASCAR race by far,” said Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading for William Hill US. “Looks like Larson has the most tickets right now, then Elliott. Dollar-wise, Truex has the most and then Hamlin.”

Prop bets for Sunday’s race are also posted. And NASCAR futures for the 2021 season are also already available across Pennsylvania sportsbooks.

NASCAR starts with a bang

So even without football, Pennsylvania’s bettors will have plenty of options this weekend.

Most sports save their biggest event for the end. But not NASCAR. Their Super Bowl arrives on Sunday.

The engines will start. The green flag will wave.

And the season will begin with a bang.

PA State Trooper Named in Illegal Gambling Ring

Illegal gambling machines, also known as “skills games,” recently played a role in two alleged crime operations in Pennsylvania.

Trooper Robert E. Covington Jr. is suspended, according to officials.

Covington is a 13-year veteran of PSP with the Bureau of Gaming Enforcement, responsible for enforcement at Pocono Downs Casino.

He allegedly is the co-owner of Sinners Swing Gentlemen’s Club in Mayfield Borough, Lackawanna County.

Gambling one of the charges

According to a State Police release, prostitution, gambling and money laundering took place at the club.

Covington received a suspension. He and three others, including co-owner David P. Klem, were recently charged following a 17-month law enforcement investigation and grand jury finding. The other two facing charges are a manager and an employee.

T-shirts available for sale at the club read: “I support working women 1 pole at a time.”

A hot pink barn near the roadway with signage out front, the establishment was far from subtle.

Unregulated gambling machines among illicit activity

According to a PSP spokesman, the gambling machines in the club are skills machines.

The Pennsylvania State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation handled the case. Senior Deputy Attorney General Erik L. Olsen and Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General Adrian S. Shchuka are prosecuting the case.

PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro said:

“We are charging four individuals for running an illegal gambling and prostitution ring. No one is above the law, and when a member of law enforcement breaks the law and breaks the public trust that all officers are duty-bound to protect, there must be accountability.”

Colonel Robert Evanchick, the commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police, added:

“The criminal conduct uncovered in this case betrays the trust of the communities we serve, and we hope the investigation and the resulting charges demonstrate our department’s commitment to fairness and transparency.”

Skills games targeted by “Sledgehammer Bandits”

In an unrelated case, three Philly men face smash-and-grab charges after allegedly pulling off a string of sledgehammer attacks on devices called “games of skill” at locations in the city.

Working as a team, one served as a lookout and another distracted customers. The third smashed the machines and took the coins.

Each grab took just over a minute.

An alert state trooper stopped the men’s vehicle.

Unlicensed gambling machines beget more crime

Ironically, the gambling devices in both the Philly and Northeast PA cases are of questionable legality in the first place. They are not licensed, inspected, regulated or taxed.

Confiscation of machines has been spotty after AG Shapiro’s decision to hold off on enforcement while waiting for the legislature and courts to definitively weigh in.

Only a handful of legal actions have taken place since. There are estimates that the illegal machines outnumber the legal devices in PA’s heavily taxed and regulated casinos.

The last major crackdown was last September.

$4 million Match 5 Megaplier ticket sold in OK

The last drawing of Mega Millions, on Tuesday, Feb. 9, yielded Oklahoma’s first big millionaire winner of the year. As a reminder, the winning numbers for the last Mega Millions drawing were 7 – 18 – 21 – 31 – 40, with a gold Mega Ball of 9. Also, the Megaplier was 4X.

A winning ticket purchased at OnCue at 13600 N. Western Ave. in Oklahoma City matched all five white balls and included the $1 Megaplier option. This means that the winning ticket is worth a staggering $4 million. Additionally, the winner becomes the Oklahoma Lottery’s 67th millionaire.

Other notable winners for the last drawing were 25 third-place prizes nationwide that matched four white balls and the gold Mega Ball. Out of the 25, five tickets added on the $1 Megaplier, boosting the prizes to $40,000.

Here in the Keystone State, you can buy lottery tickets online to tonight’s drawing. The PA online lottery offers you an easy way to play and buy lottery tickets on your mobile device or desktop.

Live! Casino Philadelphia Now Open to All

Hours before the whoop-de-do of a formal ribbon-cutting for Live! Casino Philadelphia, I tried gauging patrons’ reactions  not to sports icons Dr. J, Ron Jaworski and Charlie Manuel cutting a ribbon, but to the casino itself and its amenities.

Reviews were mostly good, but in Philly fashion, most of those who spoke wanted some more time before making a final commitment.

“Too soon to judge”

“It is still too soon to judge,” said one employee in true Philly skeptic style as he caught a smoke in the parking garage.

After another puff and more contemplation, he added, “But it looks like they are catching up to Atlantic City,” alluding to the cluster of aging casino properties 58 miles to the east.

The former employee of in-town competitor Rivers Casino Philadelphia in Fishtown, which is about six miles away from the Stadium District where Live! is situated, said he got “a small increase” in pay when he moved.

But he added that the job was better for him at Live! and the patrons like the sparkling new facility.

Clean and friendly

Robert Berry of Runnemede, one of those South Jersey suburbs in Philly’s gravitational pull, was decked out in only a light Phillies baseball jacket despite the chill as he took spins on a slot machine.

Berry was down — maybe $500 — but still happy with Live!, a comfortable ride to a cleaner and more friendly place than where he had mostly gone previously, he said. Still, he wished it was baseball season, his preferred pastime.

View of a rated player at Live!

Bill and Shirley are high-end players. While he sometimes plays craps, it is her time at slot machines that earned their status.

When they lived in mid-NJ, that meant Wind Creek Casino in Bethlehem.

But when they moved to Wayne in the Philly suburbs, they migrated to Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City, where they are treated like royalty since they sometimes drop $10,000 on an overnight trip.

They see that level of play more as entertainment than gambling, since they know the odds are always in favor of the house. In return, they get food, drinks, and concerts — something they’ve been missing during COVID-19 precautions.

Though Live! just opened, they’ve already stayed at a comped suite repeatedly. He’s a specialized engineer, so he can work on his laptop from their suite while his wife is playing.

Rated players want more amenities

First and most importantly, there is no set-aside lounge space dedicated to rated players where they can quickly get food or drink without standing in a queue.

They are accustomed to grabbing an armload of top wines from the rewards store at Hard Rock. Instead, at Live!, they have to stand in line to buy a glass of wine.

The Prime Rib, Live!’s top restaurant, has yet to open, so no comped meals there yet either.

They like the host assigned by Live!, but he “doesn’t have all the tools” their host in AC has at his disposal, said Bill.

“It’s a learning curve. They aren’t good yet,” he added.

Shirley likes the community they have developed in Atlantic City among other similar levels of players.

“It’s a culture,” she said, slapping a slot button.

All you need to know about the new Live! Casino

Playin Pennsylvania recently published a three-part lead-up series highlighting all you can expect from the newest Philadelphia casino. Catch up here:

$2 million Powerball winner in WA; unclaimed MD Powerball jackpot

The last Powerball drawing, on Feb. 10, had one big winner from Washington. The winning ticket matched all five white balls and added on the $1 Power Play option. Therefore, the prize amount for that ticket was $2 million.

The last big Powerball jackpot hit last month for $731.1 million in Maryland. In fact, it was the biggest Powerball jackpot ever won in the state. So far, the winner has not stepped forward to claim the ticket.

Moreover, the Maryland Lottery reports that three jackpots worth $2 million and more are unclaimed at the moment. Definitely, this is a good reminder to check your tickets regardless of where or when you bought them.

Automatic notification for winning online lottery tickets

In Pennsylvania, if you choose to buy your lottery tickets through the PA online lottery, you are automatically notified of any winners. That removes the extra step of manually checking lottery tickets and wondering if you have a winner.

There are other states as well that sell online lottery tickets:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

As a reminder, it is always important to play responsibly.

Mega Millions and Powerball jackpo

Here we go again! In the history of Mega Millions, this is only the third time that the jackpot is approaching the $1 billion mark. On Friday, Jan. 22, the Mega Millions estimated jackpot is $970 million, with a cash payout option of $716.3 million.

Certainly, there is history in the making.

Jan. 23 Update: A lucky winner in Michigan matched all six numbers to win the second-largest Mega Millions prize ever, according to a lottery press release. The final payout had jumped to $1.05 billion by drawing time Friday night, which equates to a one-time cash value of $776.6 million.

Friday’s prize was second only to what remains the largest single-payout lottery prize ever: a $1.537 billion jackpot claimed in South Carolina on Oct. 23, 2018.

Ten other tickets matched all five white balls for second-place prizes on Jan. 22, including one in Pennsylvania worth $1 million. Two of the 10 opted for the $1 Megaplier, doubling the prize to $2 million.

The Powerball jackpot also hit this week — a $731.1 million prize claimed in Maryland.

Winning Mega Millions numbers for Friday, Jan. 22

Check those tickets on Tuesdays and Fridays after 11 p.m. EST. The Mega Millions holds two drawings weekly, and winning numbers for tonight’s drawing get posted below.

11 Match 5 tickets worth at least $1 million sold

With such a huge jackpot number, it means that plenty of tickets were sold. In fact, nationwide, more than 5.1 million tickets were winners for Tuesday’s drawing. As a recap, the Jan. 19 drawing had winning numbers of 10 – 19 – 26 – 28 – 50, with a Mega Ball of 16.

The following states sold at least one winning ticket that matched all five white balls, making the prize worth $1 million:

  • Florida
  • California
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Mississippi
  • New Jersey (two tickets)
  • Pennsylvania
  • Washington

The PA Lottery announced that the winning ticket was sold at Gingrich’s Food Market at 216 W. Hill St. Bainbridge. So far, the winner has not claimed the prize.

Additionally, two winners from Florida added on the extra $1 Megaplier option, multiplying the prize from $1 million to $2 million. A worthwhile $1 investment, indeed.

Online lottery tickets for sale

Here in the Keystone State, the PA online lottery gives you an alternative to buying tickets from a traditional lottery retailer. Instead, you can buy tonight’s Mega Millions tickets conveniently through your mobile device or desktop.

For those of you not located in PA, there are other states that offer online lottery sales as well:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota

Mega Millions and Powerball numbers

Congratulations are in order, as a winning ticket sold in Maryland won the $731.1 million Powerball jackpot on Jan. 20!

Thus, this means for Saturday, Jan. 23, the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million, with a $15 million cash value.

It was a historic week for lottery jackpots. Two days after the Maryland win, the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot in history, $1.05 billion ($776.6 million cash payout), hit in Michigan. There were also 10 second-place winners for the Jan. 22 Mega Millions drawing, including one in PA worth $1 million.

Winning Powerball numbers for Saturday, Jan. 23

Powerball drawings occur on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 11 p.m. EST. Find tonight’s numbers posted below.

Fourth-largest Powerball jackpot prize

Circling back, the $731.1 million jackpot won is the fourth-largest Powerball jackpot and also the sixth-largest ever in the U.S., according to a press release. Overall, this jackpot is the largest in Maryland’s history.

The lucky jackpot winner will make a choice when it comes time to claim the prize. The winner can choose to have the $731.1 million paid in 30 graduated payments spanning a period of 29 years or a lump-sum payment of $546.8 million.

However, taxes definitely put a dent in the eye-watering amount. Remember that there is federal withholding tax of 24% and Maryland state withholding tax of 8.95%.

$150K ticket sold in PA

Although not a big jackpot winner, there was a Powerball ticket worth $150,000 sold in Blair County for the previous drawing. The winning numbers for Jan. 20 were 40 – 53 – 60 – 68 -69, with a red Powerball of 22.

The winning ticket sold at Sheetz at 405 E. 25th Ave. in Altoona would have only been worth $50,000 for matching four white balls and the red Powerball. However, the $1 Power Play option was purchased, and the multiplier for the drawing was 3X. Thus, the winning ticket boosts the prize to $150,000.

Draw lottery tickets online

In Pennsylvania, you can purchase draw lottery tickets online plus play other fun games through the PA online lottery. However, there are other states that offer online lottery sales as well:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Players must be 18 or older, and please make sure to play responsibly.

FanDuel Experiences Issues on NFL Championship Sunday

FanDuel left users frustrated during NFL Championship Sunday.

The popular app’s users in Pennsylvania had problems logging in and placing wagers and were greeted with this message:

Judging from personal experience, DownDetector.com and tweets, the majority of the issues started at 3:30 p.m. EST and peaked at 6:30 p.m. EST.

Poor timing for problems

About a half-hour into the NFC Championship game between Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Green Bay Packers, FanDuel tweeted:

We are aware customers in PA may be experiencing trouble logging in and submitting wagers on the Sportsbook platform. Our team is working to resolve this issue and will provide an update here as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience!

It followed up a few hours later with:

FanDuel statement on technical problem

Playin Pennsylvania reached out to FanDuel for comment.

FanDuel released this statement:

“FanDuel did experience a brief technical problem that interrupted our customer experience in Pennsylvania on Sunday. We identified the problem and our support teams addressed it as quickly as possible. Our customer service teams have also spoken to many of the affected customers. This was an isolated problem and no other interruptions were experienced within our platform across other markets.”

Without a statement on the cause of the outage, it’s safe to assume that PA’s market leader was experiencing an exorbitant amount of traffic on such a popular day for betting. A surprising half-time score of 21-10 in favor of the Bucs along with the AFC Championship matchup Bills vs. Chiefs starting at 6:40 p.m. likely added to a traffic surge.

Angry users take to Twitter

In the Philadelphia area, FanDuel was one of the trending topics on Twitter on Sunday. Users expressed their ire in tweet and meme form.

Also, yesterday and during other high peak times, this message regarding payouts appeared at the top of the FanDuel app:

FanDuel still rules despite increased competition

Since August 2019, FanDuel has taken the most bets of any sportsbook operator in Pennsylvania each month.

During the 2019-20 fiscal year, the FanDuel mobile app accounted for 49% of all online wagers placed in PA. In total during fiscal year 2019-20, the PA sports betting app took $968.7 million in bets and made $39.4 million in revenue.

When FanDuel launched in PA in late June 2019, it was the state’s fourth online sportsbook. Now, there are 13. DraftKings has held a firm grip on the No. 2 spot since arriving in the fall of 2019. Last week, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board released monthly figures for December 2020. FanDuel again was the leader for handle, but newcomer Barstool online sportsbook posted the highest revenue ($14 million) with an almost unheard of 20% hold.

Despite increased competition, six months into the 2020-21 fiscal year, FanDuel has nearly reached its total handle and already surpassed total revenue from last year. After six months, it has taken $946.8 million in bets and posted $49.5 million in revenue.

Pitt Looks to Join Villanova in March Madness

The spread tells the story.

Pitt hosts North Carolina on Tuesday night, and the game’s betting line at PA online sportsbooks speaks to the changes that have swirled across the college basketball landscape this season.

The Tarheels are only favored by 3.5 points at FanDuel Sportsbook. In prior years, that number would have been much bigger. North Carolina would have been viewed as the bigger brother, maybe even a bully.

But things are quite different this year. Duke, North Carolina and Kentucky are unranked. Pitt is ascending and just beat the Blue Devils last week.

And across the state, Villanova is among the nation’s elite, with a 10-1 record and a No. 3 ranking.

March Madness just around the corner

So a year after having no NCAA Tournament whatsoever, we’re poised for a doozy. Last week, the NCAA announced the dates for March Madness — one of the biggest sports betting events of the year.

The tournament will be held exclusively in Indiana due to COVID-19 protocols, with the first round beginning on March 19-20. The Final Four games will be played on April 3, with a national champion crowned two days later.

Both brand-name Pennsylvania teams (Villanova and Pitt) could make it. And college basketball’s traditional blue bloods are facing a more uphill climb, which makes futures bets rather fascinating.

Let’s take a quick look at the available odds in college basketball betting.

Can Villanova win another NCAA title? Oddsmakers have them third

At press time, FanDuel Sportsbook has No. 1 Gonzaga as the favorite to win the NCAA Tournament at +280. Baylor is second at +550, followed by Villanova at +900. The rest of the top 10 is as follows:

  • Michigan: +1100
  • Iowa: +1300
  • Texas: +1400
  • Illinois: +1500
  • Tennessee: +1500
  • Wisconsin: +1700
  • Alabama/Houston: +2000

Odds are available on a plethora of college basketball teams. Pitt is currently a long shot at +11000, but perhaps this is the year for the underdogs. Penn State is priced at +10000, and Temple has even longer odds at +15000.

ESPN’s latest Bracketology has Pitt firmly on the bubble

In the latest version of ESPN’s Bracketology, which is a forecast of the NCAA Tournament bracket, Pitt is listed as one of the first four teams out. However, a win over North Carolina on Tuesday could easily push them right into the tournament field.

So tonight’s home contest with the Tarheels, which will be broadcast at 7 p.m. on the ACC Network, is a huge one. As mentioned previously, Pitt is a 3.5-point underdog at FanDuel Sportsbook. The Panthers are +136 on the moneyline, while UNC is -162. The game’s over/under is set at 146.5.

In other upcoming hoops action, Penn State plays at Ohio State at 7 p.m. tomorrow, and Villanova faces UCONN Thursday at 9 p.m. on FS1.

With one NFL game left, college basketball will soon step into the spotlight

The Super Bowl is just two weeks away. And as football season comes to a close, the college basketball games grow bigger and bigger.

Before long, March Madness — that old friend that we missed so much last season — will arrive. And this tournament promises to be an interesting one.

Some of the traditional powers have fallen. And some teams from Pennsylvania could have a chance to contend.

Tonight’s spread tells the story.

But the last chapters have yet to be written.

Mega Millions history

With no large prizes won in the last drawing, let’s take a look at some lottery history. The very first Mega Millions drawing occurred on May 17, 2002, over 20 years ago.

Moreover, the first fortuitous drawing resulted in a jackpot-winning ticket of $28 million in Illinois. A second jackpot winner won out just one short week after the premier winning ticket.

Overall, since the game’s inception in 2002, a total of 193 jackpots have been won. Of the 193 jackpots, 21 jackpots were worth more than $300 million. Finally, the largest jackpot was worth an eye-watering $1.5 billion on Oct. 23, 2018 in South Carolina.

Draw lottery tickets now available online

Since the dawn of the Mega Millions jackpot drawings, the game itself has not varied much. However, what has changed is the ability to buy your tickets online in certain states. The PA online lottery allows you to buy draw game tickets plus other lottery games without setting foot into a lottery retailer.

Even if you are not located in Pennsylvania, other states where you can buy Mega Millions tickets online are:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New York

No matter how you choose to buy lottery tickets, please play responsibly.
