Penn and Caesars Hit the Big Time on Wall Street

Make way for the “King of the S&P”: Dave Portnoy.

To the sounds of the Bangles’ “Manic Monday,” Portnoy, aka Davey Day Trader or @stoolpresidente began the stock trading week Monday touting Penn National Gaming‘s pending listing on Standard and Poor’s 500 (S&P 500).

Adding $PENN is a big deal

As he wrote on his Facebook page:

$PENN is being added to the S&P 500. I’m being told that’s a big deal? #DDTG***
**I’m not a finanical advisors. I own a town of PENN stock.

Indeed, it is a big deal, despite his spelling errors.

The stock briefly traded above $141 a share early Monday morning before settling in at around $135. A share was about $130 much of last Friday before the index adjustment was announced after 7 p.m. The stock had traded below $4 a share last March as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold.

$CZR is joining $PENN on the index

Joining Penn on the “consumer discretionary” sector of the S&P before trading opens for the day on March 22 is another gaming giant, Caesars Entertainment, Inc. $CZR. That stock also had a small lift at the Monday opening, settling in at above $101 a share.

Inclusion on the index is indeed a big deal, and the market took particular notice of Penn’s selection.

The S&P measures the performance of the 500 largest companies listed on stock exchanges in the United States. The companies on the list usually influence index funds. $PENN and $CZR are now on the less influential Mid-Cap index of the S&P.

Penn owns a 36% share of Barstool Sports, and Penn has staked much of its future growth on rolling out the Barstool brand as an online sports betting app with Barstool Sportsbooks also in its retail casino properties. So far, Penn has not officially commented on the change.

Portnoy also launched a trading page on FB

Wasting no time Monday morning, Portnoy then created a new page on Facebook for his stock followers, DDTG Fan Page.

Portnoy’s new FB site stood at about 400 members when I joined first this morning and was near 4,000 members an hour later. Many of the members described themselves as new to stocks, and many talked up $PENN stock.

Portnoy had tweeted about the coming change on a video Sunday which featured him subbing for the Richard Gere role escorting Julia Roberts in the movie Pretty Woman, with stock guru Warren Buffet looking on approvingly.

Penn stock is up an astonishing 750% in the past year, buoyed by Barstool and the continuing rollout of legalized sports gambling in new jurisdictions. The PA-based company initially launched in the Keystone State but has added Michigan and Illinois.

Caesars’ shares have gained 550% in the past 12 months after also getting whacked by the pandemic. A plan to buy William Hill has helped.

AGA sees room to grow sports betting

PA gambling stocks continue to make gains as the market continues to grow.

The American Gaming Association, AGA, recently forecasted more than 47 million Americans would place bets on the 2021 March Madness tournament.

The AGA believes bracket betting will decline. But sports bets placed online or at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are expected to more than double. In PA, it will be the first time bettors can wager on the NCAA tournament online.

The AGA pointed out that since the 2019 tournament, 65.4 million more Americans can bet safely in legal markets in 13 new jurisdictions. And action is pending in more than a dozen additional jurisdictions.

PA gaming revenue looking up in May

The past week in Pennsylvania gaming news marks a progression in the return to normalcy.

Online casino slots and online sports betting revenue surged to fill the brick-and-mortar void caused by virus shutdowns, though online poker backed off a bit last month, state figures show.

Undeterred, PokerStars PA is launching a new summer poker series that guarantees a total of $750,000 in prize pools.

And Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports, followed by a crowd of Stoolies, is making a mark on the stock market, setting off some alarms among traders and the media.

PA online gaming revenue continued big growth last month

With record iGaming revenue of $43.1 million in April, PA online casinos posted another huge leap in May, climbing to $55.8 million, according to figures released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) on Tuesday.

Revenue grew 35.5% month over month for online casinos (tables and slots) in the Keystone State. However, poker’s May revenue was $4.6 million, a 12.5% drop from April.

Online casino wagers were up 32.6% month over month, with more than a billion in slot play and nearly $780 million in total table games wagers in May. For slots, it was an increase of 40.5%, while table games wagers saw a 23.1% month-over-month increase.

Sportsbooks in Pennsylvania had betting handle for May of $77.5 million, a 68% increase from last month.

Sports revenue also increased from last month, from $2.8 million to $4.8 million, according to the state.

Inaugural summer poker series in PA

An 11-day series kicks off Thursday, June 18, and guarantees a total of $750,000 in prizes. The NJ version, which is running at the same time, will pay out at least $500,000.

The PokerStars PA Summer Series features 38 tournaments. The $200 Main Event and $50 Mini-Main take place on Sunday, June 28. Those come with guarantees of $150,000 and $25,000 respectively.

The majority of the events are of the no-limit hold ’em variety.

Where Portnoy leads, Stoolies follow

A raft of recent stories — in the New York Times, Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg, MarketWatch and others — followed a Playin Pennsylvania piece from late April about the stock market and the Barstool Effect, as well as Portnoy, the online sports blog and podcast site’s founder.

So, PlayPA dipped back in and reported on Portnoy’s latest stock antics. Those antics include talking up Penn stock — he owns a chunk of the gaming company now — as well as other gambling stocks, including two that do business with Penn.

PA-based Penn National plans an entry into sports betting via the Barstool brand by year’s end.

PA Gambling Stocks Like Penn Enjoying Bull Run

Much of the action in Pennsylvania gaming the past week took place in Harrisburg and Manhattan.

For starters, a plan by Gov. Tom Wolf to divert $204 million from the horse racing industry appears to be a scratch this budget year.

But then there’s a plan by a key state senator to raise revenue for PA by widely licensing video gaming terminals, or VGTs, in many locations. Relatedly, the same legislator is proposing licensing and legalization for the devices known as skill games found in many locations outside PA casinos.

Meanwhile, Wall Street loves gambling stocks right now, particularly Penn National Gaming, which raised $982.1 million in the sale of 16.1 million shares of $PENN stock.

And finally, the Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker‘s big wrapup comes this weekend. Featured is a $200,000 guarantee Main Event.

PA lawmakers say whoa to Wolf

Wolf’s proposed Nellie Bly Scholarships plan appears dead. Under the proposal, 25,000 students attending state universities would have gotten support via the Race Horse Development Fund. Wolf wanted $204 million to fund the endeavor.

Two leading advocates for the horse business, Pete Peterson of the PA Equine Coalition and Todd Mostoller, executive director of the Pennsylvania Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Associationtold Playin Pennsylvania last week.

And a legislator who had endorsed the proposal, Rep. Carolyn Comitta, said there is no support for using horse racing funds to pay for the scholarships.

Meanwhile, PA horse racing should get a handle boost with Saturday’s Preakness Stakes betting.

Oct. 6 hearing set to consider VGTs and skill games licensing

Senate Bill 1256, pet legislation of Sen. Jake Corman, the Republican majority leader, focuses on expanding video gaming terminals and expressly legalizing games of skill.

The bill, up for a first public hearing, assigns no taxation level to the machines. And it does not state how many devices might be allowed.

All of PA’s casinos and the most prominent skill machine maker, Pace-O-Matic of PA, oppose the bill.

Wall Street loves Barstool Sports

PENN stock is on the rise even as additional shares flooded the market, buoyed by the launch of the Barstool Sportsbook app in PA on Sept. 18.

The early launch numbers provided by Penn last week showed 30,000 iOS app downloads in PA, 12,000 first-time depositors and $11 million in bets over the app’s first four days in operation.

That means it can contend with DraftKings for second in PA sports handle, while FanDuel remains in front.

PACOOP at PokerStars PA coming to a close

Playin Pennsylvania has all the details on the remaining events of the PACOOP series at PokerStars PA.

The Main Event beginning Sunday, Oct. 4, will pay out at least $200,000.

Good luck!

Gaming stocks and online betting apps proliferate in PA

It’s been a busy week in Pennsylvania gaming news, much of it about behind-the-scenes financial plans and adding to the online casino and sports betting market.

Meanwhile, just as sports and sports wagering came back, the Phillies got benched due to positive virus tests for many visiting Marlins players.

Also in PA, one OTB site closed forever, a victim of the virus and changing gambling habits.

Live! hopes to be live online by mid-August

While the Cordish Companies Live! Casino brand is new to PA, the privately held Maryland company is bullish on the Keystone State.

Newly hired executive VP Joe Billhimer this week told Playin Pennsylvania the company hopes to launch its online casino and sportsbook in mid-August. That’s well ahead of its virus-delayed brick-and-mortar projects, which include a mini-casino in suburban Pittsburgh and a full-sized casino in Philly.

Billhimer also reiterated the news Playin Pennsylvania broke recently that Live! intends to bid for an available mini-casino license on Sept. 2, with bidding starting at $7.5 million. He declined to name the locations, which must be specified as part of the bid.

The current mini-site under construction should open in the fall and the Philly site in early 2021.

Sportsbook action heading to Wall Street

The biggest action involving sportsbooks is behind-the-scenes financial scrambling as Golden Nugget, MGM, William Hill and Rush Street prepare to take their online operations public.

Their moves follow the course set by DraftKings earlier in the year. That stock has taken off along with many other online gambling stocks.

Bettors flock to books, virus hits pause for some MLB teams

Johnny Avello, director of operations at DraftKings, was jazzed about the return of sports wagering.

Futures betting looked strong. Fans were eager for baseball, which mostly began with three-game series.

And then it turned out the virus came to the visitors dugout along with the Marlins on their trip to play the Phillies. Plans for the teams remain in limbo as testing continues.

One OTB closed for good, another remains unopened

Oaks Race & Sportsbook has closed up shop, a victim of the virus and also likely the advent of online wagering options. A customer service rep told PlayPA by phone that the closing is permanent.

And the South Philadelphia Race & Turf Club, a sister operation also run by Parx Casino just across the street from the coming Live! Philadelphia Casino, remains shuttered, but without word on its ultimate fate.

Florida Powerball jackpot winner

The Saturday, March 27 drawing of Powerball had winning numbers of 6 – 14 – 38 – 39 – 65 and a red Powerball of 6. One sole ticket sold in Florida matched all the numbers to take home the big jackpot of $238 million.

The Florida Lottery announced that Publix located at 16560 North Nebraska Avenue in Lutz sold the winner. Moreover, there is a hefty bonus commission of $95,000 for selling the lucky ticket.

In Florida, jackpot winners have a total of 180 days starting from the date of the drawing to step forward and claim the prize. Yet, note that if the winner chooses the one-time lump sum cash payment, the timeframe becomes much shorter at 60 days from the drawing date to file the claim.

Buy Powerball online

While the Powerball jackpot winner purchased the ticket at a physical retailer, you can buy Powerball online. The PA online lottery offers safety and convenience by buying directly on your mobile device.

Other states besides Pennsylvania offers online Powerball as well:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois

Pennsyl-MANIA 4 Guarantees $400K

The 37th installment of Wrestlemania takes place in Tampa, Florida in a couple of weeks. That’s currently well ahead of PokerStars Pennsylvania and its popular Pennsyl-MANIA series. But PokerStars is working hard to catch up.

This Sunday, April 4, PokerStars PA hosts the fourth running of Pennsyl-MANIA. Like the first three events, the fourth Pennsyl-MANIA is a two-day no-limit hold’em tournament with a big guarantee.

However there are a few differences for Pennsyl-MANIA 4. Sunday’s event features a $300 buy-in, up from $200. Also, there is a $400,000 guaranteed prize pool this time around.

Tournament details for the fourth Pennsyl-MANIA

Aside from the buy-in and guarantee, the format for this weekend’s Pennsyl-MANIA follows that of previous iterations. Here are the particulars:

  • Day 1 start time: Sun., Apr. 4, 5 p.m. ET (ends 7 hrs., 45 min. later)
  • Day 2 start time: Mon., Apr. 5, 7 p.m. ET
  • Re-entries: Up to five re-entries during late registration period (first 4 hrs., 35 min.)
  • Starting stack: 100,000 chips (200 big blinds)
  • Levels: 15 minutes

Any final-table deal requires players to set aside at least $10,000 to go to the eventual champion.

The field should be a big one, if the recently completed PokerStars PA Bounty Builder Series is any indication. The 75-event series that took place from Feb. 20-March 8 awarded more than $2 million across all tournaments.

Satellites, a special mega satellite, and a depositor freeroll

As before, there are plenty of ways for PokerStars PA players to be part of Pennsyl-MANIA without paying full price for that $300 buy-in.

Multiple satellites are happening each day on the site with buy-ins of $25 or $30, each of which guarantees at least two seats into Pennsyl-MANIA.

On the evening of Sat., Apr. 3 at 8:15 p.m. ET there is a special Pennsyl-MANIA Mega Satellite. That event costs $30 to play and guarantees at least 20 seats into Sunday’s big event.

Finally, on Sun., Apr. 4 at 2 p.m. ET there is also a Pennsyl-MANIA Depositor Freeroll. Any PokerStars PA player who deposits at least $30 while using the code “MANIA” at any time up until 1:59 p.m. ET on Sunday earns entry into the freeroll.

The top 150 finishers in the freeroll will win Pennsyl-MANIA seats, which means PokerStars PA has added $45,000 worth of value to the event.

First Pennsyl-MANIA still holds record for largest prize pool

As happens with most film franchises, the first Pennsyl-MANIA was the best, at least in terms of size.

The tournament was held in May 2020 and featured a $200 buy-in and $250,000 guarantee.

Ultimately the event attracted close to 2,800 entries, which meant a prize pool of $515,964 or more than twice the guarantee. That remains the largest prize pool of any tournament on PokerStars PA since its Nov. 2019 launch. “D-Low1527” won the tournament following a heads-up deal, taking away $69,670.69 for the win.

PokerStars PA decided to run it twice and scheduled a second Pennsyl-MANIA in Aug. 2020. The buy-in stayed at $200 with the guarantee was upped to $350,000.

There were just over 2,000 entries, creating a prize pool of $376,836. The tournament ended in a four-way chop with “SlotWinna777” ultimately winning out and claiming a $44,641.87 first prize.

The third Pennsyl-MANIA in late Dec. 2020 also had a $200 buy-in, and in that instance PokerStars PA aimed high with a $500,000 guarantee.

Despite attracting just over 2,300 entries, the tournament was still around 380 entries shy of hitting the guarantee. That meant the $500,000 prize pool included an overlay of just over $70,000. “PokerAnomoly” ultimately took the top prize of $74,147.85.

Big weekend for PokerStars US sites

Interestingly, this Sunday’s tournament is taking place alongside simultaneous events on both PokerStars Michigan and PokerStars New Jersey.

On PokerStars NJ, the New Jersey Classic features a $500 buy-in and $100,000 guarantee. Meanwhile on PokerStars MI the first ever Michigan Classic will take place with a $300 buy-in and $500,000 guarantee.

Both events happen Apr. 4-5 at the same time as Pennsyl-MANIA. Thus will this weekend’s tournament be compared both to earlier Pennsyl-MANIAs and to the other big events on PokerStars’ US sites.

We’ll see just how big the fourth Pennsyl-MANIA turns out to be. There won’t be any pile drivers or body slams like in Tampa a couple of weeks from now. But there should be plenty of interesting battles nonetheless.

Different state lotteries benefit various state funds. For example, the Keystone State’s lottery program benefits older Pennsylvanians. Please play responsibly.

The latest Department of Justice opinion on the Wire Act has people on alert. However, Pennsylvania is standing pat on its plan to move forward with online gambling in 2019.

Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) Communications Director Doug Harbach told Playin Pennsylvania the group would certainly consider the new opinion; however, the group seems pretty comfortable with what the state is offering:

“We must thoroughly review and discuss the opinion to gauge any ramifications to gaming activities in Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, as Pennsylvania’s current gaming is all intrastate and legal within the borders of the state, we will continue to regulate the legal forms of gaming as provided for in the Gaming Act.”

Diving into the PGCB statement

Needless to say, there is a certain amount of ambiguity in Harbach’s statement. Namely, it is unclear whether PGCB is comfortable with everything legislated in the 2017 gambling expansion act or simply what has already launched.

With casinos already conditionally licensed to offer online sports betting, casino and poker, one could assume that falls under his definition of current.

Nonetheless, there are still no finalized regulations for online gambling. This leaves room for the group to reassess if the regs adequately address any issues the new opinion raises. That way, PGCB can be certain that elements of online gambling are in order not to run afoul of the Wire Act.

Here are some examples of things they will need to take a closer look at:

  • Payment processing
  • Server locations
  • Online poker compacting with other states
  • Live dealer games

The buzz out of Pennsylvania is that launch will move forward as planned for interactive gaming. Take that with a grain of salt though, as delays have already plagued this process. Moreover, PGCB already has a ton of work on its plate testing and launching retail sportsbook, VGTs, online betting apps and interactive gaming.

Adding in a thorough review of the Wire Act opinion is just another element with the potential to slow things down.

Online lottery still a question mark

PGCB issued a statement, but PA Lottery still has not said if its online lottery offerings are in jeopardy under this new opinion.

What Pennsylvania’s online lottery does have going for it is that none of its offerings are explicitly out of state.

Keno and virtual games are exclusive to PA, as are instant games on the PA iLottery site. Other states, like Michigan, sell tickets to multistate games like Powerball, which is something that is highly questionable under the new opinion, should the DOJ choose to enforce it.

PA iLottery

The PA iLottery may not be giving away any gold, but the Pot of Gold prize draw promo offers several opportunities to win cash.

This includes one lucky winner taking the grand prize of $10,000.

But this is not one of those winner-takes-all deals. The Pot of Gold draw promo, which goes through St. Patrick’s Day, is spread over seven weeks. It means there are plenty of opportunities to win some cash, and it comes in the form of 100 weekly winners (spread over six weeks) receiving $50 each.

Week One winners will be announced by Feb. 13. On the seventh and final week, the pot increases to 200 winners earning $50 each.  Add in the grand prize winner, and it adds up to 801 winners and $50,000 in cash.

How to play Pot of Gold

Eligibility requires a PA iLottery account. You will need to log in to your account or create one. The cash opportunities can be accessed via the “My Bonuses” page.

  • Hit the claim icon on the $50,000 Pot of Gold Prize Draw Bonus to enter.
  • Qualify by going to the cashier page and making a minimum deposit of $25 for an entry.
  • Players need to claim the promotion weekly during the promotional period (see below) to earn entries and qualify for the grand prize.
  • Entries close at 11:59 pm on the Tuesday of each drawing period.
  • Individuals can only win once per week, but weekly winners will be eligible for the grand prize drawing.
  • Taxes and intercepts are required to be taken from the $10,000 winner before the prize is credited to account.

What to play on PA iLottery

Once you deposit money on the online lottery site, you can use it to play a number of online instant games. There are 32 titles to choose from on the PA iLottery site, including Foxin’ Wins, A Dragon’s Story, and Cashbuster Extreme.

You can also take a crack at the site’s newest game, Volcano. It is a drop-style game with a fiery theme worth checking out.

Announcing the winners

There are still six weekly opportunities to claim an entry, starting with 11:59 pm on Feb. 12. There will be winner announcements on the following dates:

  • Second week: Feb. 20 (100 winners of $50 each)
  • Third week: Feb. 27 (100 winners of $50 each)
  • Fourth week: March 6 (100 winners of $50 each)
  • Fifth week: March 13 (100 winners of $50 each)
  • Sixth week: March 20 (100 winners of $50 each)
  • Seventh week: March 25 (200 winners of $50 each and one grand-prize winner of $10,000)
