‘Gut feeling’ leads to $1 million prize

According to the Michigan Lottery, Rnysha Woods of New Haven won a second-place Mega Millions prize for the Jan. 15 drawing. She bought the winner at a Sunoco gas station, which is located at 58955 Gratiot Avenue in New Haven, Michigan.

This time, Woods states “I play Mega Millions often but had an unusual ‘gut feeling’ telling me to buy tickets for the next drawing.” Once she checked her tickets after the drawing, she matched all five white balls. With her winnings, Woods plans on taking care of her family.

$500k Powerball Fortune Cookie Winner

Next time you buy your favorite Chinese take-out food, check your fortune cookies! According to the NC Education Lottery, Ernesto Sorzano bought his favorite fried rice and shrimp with a lucky fortune cookie.

Sorzano decided to to play those lucky numbers listed on the cookie’s fortune for the Feb. 20 drawing. Indeed, those numbers matched four of the five white balls and Powerball. Normally, that prize is worth $50,000.

However, Sorzano also added on the $1 Power Play multiplier. For the drawing, the maximum 10x multiplier was drawn. Thus, the $3 Power Play ticket boosted his prize all the way to $500k.

After the required taxes of federal and state withholdings, Sorzano’s prize was worth over $353k. With the money, he plans on buying a new home.

DraftKings' UFC 259 promo will be a hit for new users.

All you need is one punch.

The UFC returns Saturday at the Apex Facility in Las Vegas with three title bouts. As if that wasn’t sweet enough for MMA fans, DraftKings has added a tantalizing new promotion. New users who bet $1 on any UFC 259 title fight can get a 100-1 return if either fighter lands a single punch.

And so an event that is already filled with intriguing matchups gains even more mojo thanks to DraftKings.

Let’s take a quick look at UFC 259 and the available odds at our region’s sportsbooks.

Blachowicz’s comeback story continues in the main event

Saturday’s main event contains a remarkable comeback story. Light heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz started his career 2-4. But since then, the Polish fighter has trended upward, winning eight of his last nine fights and four in a row (three by stoppage).

On Saturday, the 38-year-old will take on middleweight champion Israel Adesanya

Adesanya’s story is almost the exact opposite. He is undefeated in UFC action and has stormed through the middleweight division, racking up wins over Yoel Romero and Paulo Costa.

On Saturday, Adesanya is -230 on the moneyline at DraftKings, while Blachowicz is +185. The over/under for the fight is set at 2.5 rounds

And as previously mentioned, the DraftKings promotion will pay out 100-1 odds for new users if either fighter lands a single punch. That promotion is good for the other title fights on the card as well (Amanda Nunes vs Megan Anderson and Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling).

Here’s the fine print:

  • First time DraftKings depositors only
  • Make a deposit of $5+ into your Sportsbook account
  • Following the deposit, place a bet of at least $1 on either fighter to win in any featured Main Event fight
  • Bet must be placed prior to the start of the Main Event fight
  • If there is a punch recorded by either fighter, you will be issued a $100 bonus once your original $1+ bet settles
  • Bonus paid as four (4) $25 Free Bets
  • Free Bets valid for 7 days. Failure to use the Free Bets will void the award
  • Free Bet amount is not included in any returns or winnings
  • Free Bet also not redeemable for cash, non-transferable, and non-refundable
  • One qualifying bet per user
  • Excludes live bets, parlays, free bets, cash out bets, and voided bets

Nunes a huge favorite in Saturday’s second title fight

Often nicknamed the “Baddest Woman on the Planet,” UFC featherweight champion Amanda Nunes is an epic favorite in her title defense against Megan Anderson. Nunes is -1250 at DraftKings, while Anderson enters at +750. Oddsmakers also envision this being a quick fight, with an over/under set at 1.5 rounds.

Nunes has won 11 straight fights, with a perfect 7-0 record in championship bouts. Anderson enters the octagon after winning her last two fights in the first round.

Yan vs. Sterling title bout features fighters with opposite styles

The other title match Saturday features a pair of bantamweight brawlers who were originally supposed to meet in December. Petr Yan is undefeated in UFC action (7-0), while Aljamain Sterling is 19-3. This fight could prove to be a contrast in styles.

Yan is often content to trade punches, whereas Sterling’s strength lies in his grappling. His resume includes a first-round submission of Cory Sandhagen last June.

The fight is considered a pick’em at DraftKings, with both fighters at -110. Their total is set at 3.5 rounds.

For the title fights, bettors will find multiple wagering options. These include winning method, individual round betting and whether or not the fight will go the distance.

And beyond the three title bouts, there are 12 other fights on the jam-packed UFC 259 card. The rest of the matchups and their moneyline odds are as follows:

  • Islam Makhachev (-335) vs. Drew Dober (+250)
  • Dominick Cruz (+110) vs. Casey Kenney (-137)
  • Thiago Santos (+138) vs. Aleksandar Rakic (-167)
  • Joseph Benavidez (+110) vs. Askar Askarov (-134)
  • Sean Brady (-230) vs. Jake Matthews (+180)
  • Song Yadong (-141) vs. Kyler Phillips (+115)
  • Trevin Jones (+180) vs. Mario Bautista (-225)
  • Uros Medic (-177) vs. Aalon Cruz (+144)
  • Tim Elliott (+102) vs. Jordan Espinosa (-124)
  • Kai Kara-France (-141) vs. Rogerio Bontorin (+115)
  • Carlos Ulberg (-230) vs. Kennedy Nzechukwu (+180)
  • Livia Renata Souza (+172) vs. Amanda Lemos (-215)

Daily fantasy players can also expect a number of big contests for Saturday’s fights. So there’s no shortage of action once UFC 259 begins.

It all starts with the early preliminaries at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN+ followed by the main card at 10 p.m. on ESPN Pay-Per-View.

There are three title fights at the top of the card.

A main event pairing champion versus champion.

And a massive DraftKings promotion that will make it all even better.

Sixers 2021-2022 betting preview.

Is “The Process” about to reach the pinnacle? NBA bettors seem to think so. At FanDuel, the 76ers are the most bet team to win the NBA Championship (20% of the bets) and the Eastern Conference (44% of the bets).

Three 76ers players lead the way in their respective markets at FanDuel.

  • MVP: Joel Embiid, 20% of the bets.
  • Defensive Player of the Year: Ben Simmons, 37% of the bets.
  • 6th Man of the Year: Shake Milton, 26% of the bets.

The 76ers are FanDuel’s biggest liability in the NBA Championship market and the Eastern Conference.

FanDuel’s Director of Publicity Kevin Hennessy commented to Playin Pennsylvania:

“FanDuel Customers love backing the 76ers. It sure helps that they are performing well and the favorite team in two of our biggest markets in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.”

NBA 2021 odds: Favorites, shifts and 76ers

At Pennsylvania online sportsbooks, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets opened the season as favorites to win the NBA Championship. A January trade that sent James Harden from the Houston Rockets to the Nets moved the Nets to the second-best odds to claim the NBA title.

At the halfway point of the season, those four teams still have the lowest odds at sportsbook apps. The Utah Jazz have seen the largest odds shift in the NBA Championship outright market. The Jazz opened at +4200 and are now +950.

With the NBA All-Star Break approaching on March 5, the Sixers are 23-12 (18-15-2 ATS). They are a stellar 15-3 at home.

Embiid’s MVP climb

Joel Embiid might want to troll bookmakers who put him at +4000 to win the NBA MVP before the season started.

Perhaps he doesn’t have to unleash his ire via social media since he is letting his play on the court to the talking. In 29 games, Embiid has averaged 29.8 points, 3.3 assists, 11.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.3 blocks.

On Feb. 20 against the Chicago Bulls, Embiid had a career-high 50 points along with 17 rebounds.

Here is how Embiid’s MVP odds dropped (odds via William Hill):

  • Preseason: +4000
  • January 6: +2500
  • Jan. 12: +1200
  • Jan. 23: +500
  • March 1: +400 but it was as low as +350

The Sixers’ big man has also attracted the largest MVP wager thus far at William Hill. A Nevada bettor placed $5,000 on Embiid +500 for a total potential payout of $30,000.

  • Mar. 7: 2021 All-Star Game

  • Mar. 25: NBA Trade Deadline
  • May 13-15: Class of 2020 Hall of Fame Enshrinement
  • May 18-21: Play-in Tournament
  • And May 22 – July 22: 2021 NBA Playoffs

Parx Sports Betting in Chickies and Petes Facing Opposition

A proposal to relocate Parx off-track wagering operations from the South Philadelphia Turf Club to a nearby Chickie’s & Pete’s restaurant and sports bar resembles a steeplechase with jumps and hazards, despite being just eight straight blocks apart.

Similar proposals for the relocation of two additional Parx OTW locations in the Philly suburbs – one in Upper Darby and another in Montgomery County – to within the popular restaurant and sports bar chain locations nearby encountered no public opposition.

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has never previously been asked to relocate an OTW to a restaurant.

Racing Commission must approve relocations

The commission deferred action and did not publicly discuss the South Philadelphia Race and Sportsbook proposal at its Feb. 23 meeting.

It is unclear if the racing commission will consider the petition at its March 30 meeting. Parx had initially sought to expedite approval and asked the commission not to schedule a hearing on the plan.

Also unclear for now is how the commission will respond to a civic group’s counter-petition to Parx. The group is seeking a public forum to air its opposition. The civic group was supported by letters from three elected officials.

Civic association wants to be heard about Turf Club

The Packer Park Civic Association last week filed a 13-page counter-petition to the Parx proposal.

The document said, “We cannot imagine a stronger case for intervention.”

The association’s petition calls the location a “densely populated residential neighborhood,” with rowhomes abutting the location.

The petition also called the restaurant “a magnet for children” and claimed a playground is too close by. The group also cited crime, traffic, quality of life, and property values as issues. The full petition can be seen below.

Shannon Powers, a spokeswoman for the commission, said a written response to the civic group is expected, but there is no timetable.

Mark Stewart, a Harrisburg-based lawyer for Parx, declined comment.

But first up for Turf Club is Philly Zoning Board

Before facing the racing commission, the Turf Club plan first has a March 9 continuation of a Philadelphia Zoning Board of Adjustment hearing.

Hours of previous testimony raised a crucial question regarding sports betting and local zoning regs: Does Philly zoning law permit a sportsbook operation at that particular location?

The city’s Department of Licensing and Inspections had initially classified the Parx and restaurant chain’s plan as a “special exception,” which sets a relatively low bar for zoning approval.

The civic group argued the city should have responded with what is known as a refusal. A refusal requires getting a variance, a far more stringent approval process.

The city’s Law Department has agreed that a refusal was warranted.

A city lawyer went further. He argued the city’s zoning code requires a location to be licensed as a casino to operate sports gambling. A Parx lawyer disagreed.

The racing commission will consider the ruling of the zoning board before deciding on the proposed move, according to its spokeswoman.

Stand-alone horse betting venues on their way out

In-person horse betting operations like OTBs are increasingly unsustainable businesses without other betting options on offer. And live horse racing bettors are an aging demographic.

But in general, having pari-mutuel gambling at a site allows for the addition of sports wagering under PA gaming regulations.

That economic reality is spelled out in Parx’s petition asking for approval to move from a huge building directly across the street from the new Live! Casino Philadelphia into a 2,600 square foot space within Chickie’s and Pete’s.

The petition reads:

“Absent the ability to co-locate facilities and take advantage of such relationships, the OTB concept will face significant challenges and continued closures, as the old model is not sustainable given current patron trends and existing facilities that are too large for the market.”

Odds of winning

Your odds of winning a Powerball prize of some amount is the same in every drawing at 1 in 24.9. Ultimately, the size of the jackpot is irrelevant to your odds of winning.

Thus, even if the jackpot is $1 billion, the 1 in 24.9 odds still stands. Finally, when jackpot prizes increase, there are typically more tickets sold as interest increases. However, the number of tickets sold bears no effect on your odds in winning, which still remain the same.

Buy lottery tickets online

Being here in the Keystone State means you can buy Powerball tickets online through the state-run PA online lottery. New players receive a host of welcome bonuses plus there are daily promotions as well. Finally, you can play other games besides just draw games.

Other states where you can buy draw tickets online include:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota

Two Match 5 second-place winners

The last Mega Millions drawing on Feb. 23 had a couple of big winning tickets. As a recap, the winning numbers were 5 – 7 – 9 – 20 – 57 with a gold Mega Ball of 15. Additionally, the Megaplier was 3X.

Two winners, one from California and the other from Missouri managed to match all five white balls. The winner in MO added on the optional $1 Megaplier, boosting the prize up to $3 million. The ticket was sold by Gas Mart on 209 E. Grand Avenue in St. Louis.

Now, in California, winners are paid on a pari-mutuel basis. Thus, while in most states matching all five white balls in a drawing is worth $1 million, this particular CA winner has a ticket worth $194k according to the California Lottery.

Eagles Ahead of the Game on Sportsbook and Casino Partnerships

The 2021 offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles is filled with plenty of on-field personnel questions.

  • Will Jalen Hurts be the starting quarterback or will the Birds select a QB with their No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft?
  • Based on current projections, the Eagles are $49 million over the salary cap. What players will be on the move to alleviate the cap hit?
  • Who is going to fill the glaring holes at wide receiver, offensive line and linebacker?

Off the field, when it comes to sports betting partnerships, the Eagles have a solid roster. It’s due in large part to the work of Catherine Carlson, the Eagles’ Senior VP of Revenue and Strategy. Prior to landing with the Eagles, Carlson worked for Disney, the Orlando Magic, and Australian sports organizations.

Carlson develops new revenue streams for the Eagles through sponsorship and media. She has tapped into multiple veins of the sports betting industry as the Eagles have partnerships with DraftKings, Unibet and Fox Bet and a new deal with Esports Entertainment Group, a betting platform for esports.

Pro teams capitalize on iGaming and sportsbook partnerships

Carlson and Jim Van Stone, President of Business Operations & Chief Commercial Officer at Monumental Sports Entertainment provided their insights this week during the webinar “Securing the Right Sportsbook Partner” presented by G2E and the American Gaming Association.

The Eagles are among the many professional teams that are capitalizing on legal sports betting to create partnerships with operators. As Carlson explained:

“The sportsbook partnership category has evolved significantly over the past few years. Research showed our Philly fans like to gamble.

“For us and other teams, we are taking a non-exclusive approach to the category. We have three sportsbook partners. It may sound like a lot but we are very thoughtful on maintaining a meaningful share of voice and how we execute it is by providing different platforms and different opportunities for our partners. Each one also has different objectives and different KPIs. The overarching objective for all of them to partner with us is to build their customer base and make money.”

Here is a look at the Philadelphia Eagles partnerships:

Statistics on sports betting

Washington, D.C. fans like to gamble too. Monumental Sports & Entertainment owns the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals and the Capital One Arena, home to the first legal sportsbook in a pro sports venue in the US.

Van Stone pointed to research Monumental Sports conducted on the sports betting landscape and Washington D.C. fans and found:

  • Fans were 2X more likely compared to the general marketplace to place a bet on sports
  • 12x more likely to be interested in DFS
  • 67% more likely to place a bet online
  • 34% more likely to bet at least $500 on an annual basis.

“We thought this was a huge opportunity from a fan engagement standpoint,” said Van Stone. “Sports betting provides a great opportunity to enhance the overall experience for fans in venues. We’ve been bullish on it.”

Eagles and Unibet

The Eagles’ first foray into iGaming and sportsbook partnerships was with Unibet. In Oct. 2019, the Birds and Unibet announced a multiyear partnership that made Unibet an official casino partner.

As part of the deal, Unibet received permanent branding presence on Lincoln Financial Field‘s Northwest Suites located on the main concourse. Unibet signage is prominently displayed on the “Eagles Nest Tower,” the stadium’s digital billboard.

Carlson commented on Unibet, which is part of the European-based Kindred Group:

“Their focus was on building brand awareness and credibility in the marketplace because people weren’t familiar with the brand in the United States.”

Now-former Eagles head coach Doug Pederson once-innovative play calling went stagnant in 2020 but that wasn’t the case off the field. Carlson said the COVID-19 pandemic forced the Eagles to be more creative and innovative with their partners.

Perhaps the best example of that is launching Eagles-branded Blackjack and an online slot at Unibet online casino. They are the first casino games with professional sports branding. Carlson said it’s been “tremendously successful” for Unibet.

“Working with them to create the co-branded online casino games was a great way for us to extend our brand. It demonstrated the power of the Eagles brand and that we could drive value whether there are games being played at our stadium or not.”

Eagles and Fox Bet

The Eagles and Fox Bet bonded with a multiyear partnership in Oct. 2020. The biggest part of the deal is a 4,000-square-foot Fox Bet lounge and production studio at Lincoln Financial Field.

Other aspects of the Fox Bet and Eagles partnership include:

  • Broadcast, digital and social media advertising on team channels.
  • Custom promotions and a branding presence on game days.
  • Prominent messaging on the stadium’s LED board and end zone boards, and signage on concourse levels.
  • The presenting sponsor of the Eagles Tailgate Crew, tailgating pods featuring Eagles Entertainment groups that will interact with Eagles fans, when they return, in the parking lots on game days.

She called the Fox Bet Lounge her “pandemic project.”

The Eagles only got to host 5,000 fans for three games at the Linc during the 2020 season. The Flyers, Phillies, and Sixers have recently put in requests to have limited capacity for home games.

With vaccination distribution picking up and COVID rates falling in PA, it’s a safe bet the Eagles will follow suit. On the Eagles website, they are touting season membership to the Fox Bet Lounge for the 2021 season for Eagles Season Ticket Members, Suite Holders, and Partners.

Membership benefits of the Fox Bet Lounge include:

  • Private entrance to Lincoln Financial field and preferred parking
  • Witness Eagles players arrival on game day
  • See visiting team walk on the field
  • View post-game press conferences
  • All-inclusive food and beverage offerings from pre-game through one-hour post-game

Eagles and DraftKings

Also in Oct. 2020, the Eagles added DraftKings to their roster of partners by making them their official daily fantasy sports partner and official sports betting partner.

DraftKings got exclusive naming rights to the field club at Lincoln Financial Field. The premium lounge, the DraftKings Field Club is “a true VIP experience.” Some features of the lounge are exclusive game-day access featuring an on-field viewing area in the north end zone and hospitality arrangements in the private club space.

DraftKings branding is integrated throughout the Eagles’ social media channels, practice livestreams and Eagles-affiliated broadcasts. Also, it will have sponsorship activations included in the team’s annual NFL Draft Party.

Eagles Stat Showdown, a free-to-play game from DraftKings, gives fans the opportunity to win weekly prizes throughout the NFL season.

Carlson on the DraftKings partnership:

“We are focused with them on customer acquisition and fan engagement through the free-to-play games and tapping into some of our fan favorite assets such as live-streaming practice. I feel like we have had a very successful model creating truly meaningful value with multiple partners.”

The NFL and responsible gaming

Carlson noted that the NFL and the teams have taken a “thoughtful approach” to not advertise sports betting to a young audience. For example, the Eagles avoid betting and online casino-related advertising in situations that may be intended for minors.

There is no signage for Unibet, DraftKings or Fox Bet in the stadium’s lower bowl because it is TV visible. The Fox Bet Lounge does have tickers with odds; however, it is only for fans over the age of 18.

“The NFL has provided us with guardrails to ensure we are being responsible in our relationships with sportsbooks,” said Carlson. “They have a gambling policy and the guardrails protect the integrity of the game as the No. 1 priority.”

What’s next

Carlson said on-site activation at Lincoln Financial Field is a “pipe dream” right now.

“We aren’t committed to jumping into that quite yet.”

Van Stone pointed to the opportunities around legalization and partnerships:

“I think there is going to be a huge lift in new opportunities and programming. One of the things I’m excited about is the tech companies that arise out of the approved sports betting landscape. There is going to be a huge opportunity for new ideas and innovation. The rules and regulations, even over the last 18 months have changed dramatically. It’s going to be a fast-moving train.”

Problem Gambling Resources Highlighted in March

March is Problem Gambling Awareness Month on the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board‘s calendar, a time to heighten awareness of the resources available to help individuals with a gambling problem.

Representatives of the PGCB’s Office of Compulsive and Problem Gambling will participate in a virtual kickoff on Monday.

Throughout the month, the PGCB will join with partners to educate Pennsylvanians about the effects of gambling disorders.

Spotlight on problem gambling tools

The gaming board is spotlighting tools that help to identify gambling addiction.

Also, focusing on services aimed at minimizing the consequences of problem gambling.

The director of the PGCB’s Office of Compulsive and Problem Gambling, Elizabeth Lanza, stressed that gambling addiction is an issue that could be more problematic in light of the virus pandemic.

Lanza said:

“The goal of Problem Gambling Awareness Month is to spotlight the issues and educate the general public about the warning signs of problem gambling, as well as raise awareness about treatment and other programs that are available both locally and nationally.”

The PGCB Executive Director, Kevin O’Toole, said the oversight board and the industry both recognize the importance of gambling addiction programs. And the goal is to help individuals and provide education, outreach, and prevention options.

And also problem gambling resources

The board works with both state and national problem gambling organizations and PA gaming license holders to ensure its ability to provide useful methods and resources to deal with gambling addiction.

O’Toole said the PGCB has expanded and enhanced the tools for addressing gambling addiction as new forms of gambling are added.

Self-Exclusion Program a key tool

The PA Self-Exclusion program now allows individuals to ban themselves from iGaming, Fantasy Contests, and Video Gaming Terminals, or VGTs.

The program has aided thousands in staying out of Pennsylvania casinos. To date, over 16,000 persons have taken advantage of the program to self-ban from casinos. The bans run for one year, five years, or a lifetime.

Other options

Additional responsible gambling tools include:

  • www.ResponsiblePlay.pa.gov, a new website dedicated to addressing problem gambling, with information and links to identify a potential gambling problem and find help.
  • The PlayPause program from GeoComply and Conscious Gaming allows individuals to self-exclude from online casino sites across state lines. This important RG tool debuted in PA at BetMGM in late December 2020.
  • Options for participants to limit online play or their spending at operator websites. That includes fantasy contests, online casino games, online poker, and/or online sports betting.

Lanza summed up:

“The public needs to know that problem gambling tools are out there. And also that gambling addiction treatment is not only available but has proven to be effective.”
