Match 5 winner from CA

The last drawing of the Mega Millions on Friday, March 12 had winning numbers of 2 – 24 – 25 – 31 – 65 and a gold Mega Ball of 18. While no one won the whole jackpot, there was one winner from California that matched all five white balls.

Typically, a Match 5 ticket is a second-place winner of the Mega Millions and yields a $1 million prize. However, in California, prize amounts are on a pari-mutuel basis.

In other words, the prize depends on ticket sales and number of winners and is different from prizes on the Mega Millions website. For this particular drawing, the winning prize was $508,715. Finally, the Match 5 ticket was sold at Savemor Discount Liquor located at 2001 Novato Blvd. in Novato, CA.

Online lottery alternative

Rather than buying your draw lottery tickets from a traditional physical lottery retailer, why not try an alternative? Right here in Pennsylvania, the PA online lottery offers a fantastic alternative where you can purchase any tickets from home or on a mobile device.

Other than PA, there are other states that offer an online lottery alternative to traditional retailers:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New York

row of bugles

It’s mini-casino madness, and everyone of legal gambling age in Pennsylvania is invited.

Hollywood Casino York gets its day in the spotlight on Nov. 1, when locals can chime in at a hearing regarding the proposed property.

Now two more projects have mini-casino hearings on the books for December.

Do you want to chime in yay or nay on a new casino property coming to your neck of the woods?

Here’s your chance

Mount Airy Pittsburgh meeting Dec. 4

The PGCB announced that it would be holding a hearing on Dec. 4 regarding a Big Beaver mini-casino project from Mount Airy Casino Resort.

Officials from Mount Airy Casino Resort filed plans with the PGCB in mid-October for the project, which is tentatively set to be called Mount Airy Pittsburgh.

The proposed project will turn 100 acres of land near I-376 into a multi-million dollar mini-casino and entertainment complex. Mini-casinos, of course, have come about as part of the Pennsylvania gambling expansion bill. They’re capable of housing up to 750 slot machines and 30 table games.

Mount Airy used a winning bid of $21,888,888.88 to acquire the license in February.

The purpose of next month’s hearing is to collect public input from township residents on the proposed casino. Per the PGCB press release:

“The purpose of the hearing which, per provisions of the Gaming Act must be held within the local municipality in which the proposed casino would be located, is to both provide a forum for individuals to voice their support or opposition to the proposed casino and to permit those persons with an interest in the applicant’s proposal to learn more about the project.”

The hearing will be held at Big Beaver Borough Fire Station #14.

PGCB has also begun collecting requests from township residents, business owners, and other stakeholders who wish to enter testimony of their own. The deadline to do so is Dec. 3.

A separate hearing will be held in Harrisburg allowing Mount Airy representatives to offer oral arguments on the project’s behalf.

Stadium Casino’s Westmoreland County project

Another mini-casino project, another public hearing.

This time, the application comes from the yet-to-be-built Stadium Casino project, co-owned by Cordish and Greenwood Gaming (Parx), and the site of the potential mini-casino is Westmoreland Mall.

The proposed project actually comes with added levels of intrigue, due to persistent questions of Stadium’s long-term future.

Reports popped up in mid-October suggesting that maybe Stadium, formerly known as Philly Live!, was dead on arrival.

Specifically, it was reported that ownership may be seeking to sell their gaming license, which of course includes their mini-casino license.

Stadium spent $40.1 million to lock down a spot in Westmoreland Mall.

Despite the breathless reports and talk of an early and entirely unexpected fold, it seems the Stadium mini-casino project will be moving forward—maybe. The PGCB announced this week that it would also be holding a hearing seeking public input on the proposed Westmoreland parlor.

The hearing will be on Dec. 5 at the Hempfield Township Municipal Building.

But does this mean that Stadium won’t sell? The hearing may be a glimpse behind the curtain at just what Cordish and Greenwood have in mind.

Make your voice heard

If you’re unable to attend either public hearing, you may also submit written testimony. Mailed comments must be postmarked no later than Dec. 3, 2018, and mailed to:

Villanova NCAA Tournament Odds 2021

Can the Villanova Wildcats claw their way through the NCAA Tournament without senior leader Colin Gillespie?

Villanova (16-6) opens the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Friday against Winthrop (23-1).

The Wildcats are a #5 seed and the Big South champ Winthrop is a #2 seed in the South Region.

For the first time in its 82-year history, the NCAA Tournament was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year’s tournament will take place in a “bubble” format in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

Online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania have Villanova as 6.5-point favorites over Winthrop with the total points line at 139.

Early money on the NCAA tournament

A few hours after the bracket was released, BetRivers said the most bet game since brackets were released is Winthrop vs. Villanova with 11% of current game bets. The largest current first game bet is a $5,500 wager on Arkansas vs. Colgate Over 157.5 points (-108).

Gillespie’s injury impacts Nova’s odds

Gillespie’s injury had an immediate impact on Villanova’s Championship and Final Four odds.

The day after the injury, Nova’s NCAA Championship odds went from +1400 to +2000. Their chances to make the Final Four moved from +200 to +400 (at DraftKings). The Cats are 0-2 without Gillespie.

Villanova’s odds entering the 2021 NCAA Tournament:

  • National Championship: +4000
  • To make Final Four: +900

Cats bit by injuries

Gillespie’s season (and possibly his collegiate career) ended with a torn MCL during Villanova’s 72-60 win against Creighton on March 3. The tri-Big East Player leadership and presence has been missed. Nova went on to lose their last game of the regular season against Providence, 54-52.

The Wildcats were dealt another injury when guard Justin Moore left the Providence game in the first half with a severe ankle sprain. Nova entered the Big East Tournament as the top seed but were upset by Georgetown in the quarterfinals, 72-71. Despite being dubbed as “doubtful” for the game, Moore played 27 minutes and scored 10 points.

2021 marked head coach Jay Wright‘s 20th season at Villanova. He’s led the Wildcats to three NCAA Final Fours and national championships in 2016 and 2018.

Drexel faces top seed

The Drexel Dragons (12-7) punched their first ticket to the Big Dance in 26 years by winning the Colonial Athletic Association tournament. The Dragons face off against #1 seed Illinois on Friday. PA sportsbook apps have the Dragons +23 as huge underdogs.

While everyone loves a Cinderella, don’t necessarily try to make the shoe fit on a #16 seed. In 140 games, the #16 seed has only defeated the #1 seed once.

Drexels’s odds entering the 2021 NCAA Tournament:

  • National Championship: +20000
  • To make Final Four: +3000

Rutgers return to tourney

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights haven’t been to March Madness since the Middle Ages – or so it seems. But they fought hard in a tough Big Ten Conference and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, ending the longest drought (30 years) among Division I high-major men’s basketball teams.

In the Midwest region, the #10 seed Rutgers (15-11) will face the #7 seed Clemson on Friday. On Kenpom.com, Rutgers ranks ahead of Clemson.

PA online sportsbooks opened with Rutgers as one-point favorites and the total points line at 126.5.

If you are in New Jersey and want to bet on Rutgers, you’ll have to cross the bridge and come to Pennsylvania. Betting on NJ teams is not permitted in New Jersey.

Rutgers’s odds entering the 2021 NCAA Tournament:

  • National Championship: +7000
  • To make Final Four: +1650

NCAA Basketball Betting

At Pennsylvania sports betting apps, the following markets are available for college basketball games:

  • Moneyline
  • Point spread
  • Over/under
  • Alternate point spread
  • Alternate total points
  • Halves (total points, spread, moneyline, alternate spread, alternate total points)
  • Game props (total points by team, total points by team each half), odd/even

Futures markets have been available for months, with Gonzaga and Baylor as the favorites to win the NCAA Championship.

College basketball betting has certain restrictions that you won’t encounter when betting on the NBA. For instance, legal sportsbooks comply with state specific rules for NCAA basketball betting markets.

In Pennsylvania, legal sportsbooks are not able to offer betting markets on player props.

In New Jersey, legal sportsbooks can’t offer betting markets on any college sport or game that takes place in New Jersey. Also, while you are physically located in New Jersey, you can not bet on any New Jersey college team regardless of where the game takes place.

For example, the 2021 NCAA tourney is in Indianapolis. You can not bet on Rutgers on any legal, regulated sportsbook app while physically located in New Jersey.

PA sports betting handle at record numbers in PA

The 2021 NCAA Tournament will be the first March Madness where bettors can wager online in Pennsylvania. It would have been last year’s tourney, but it was cancelled.

Sports betting handle in Pennsylvania hit an all-time high in January, reaching $615.3 million. Revenue for January hit $34 million. Figures for February which will include the Super Bowl are due out this week.

Data from American Gaming Association predicts more than 47 million Americans will place bets on the 2021 March Madness tournament.

Since the 2019 tournament, 65.4 million more people in the US are now able to place legal bets in 13 new jurisdictions. The AGA says online betting and bets placed at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks are expected to grow “dramatically” and bracket betting contests are declining.

AGA President and CEO Bill Miller said:

“The sports betting landscape has changed dramatically since 2019 – and as a result, tournament betting has transformed. As consumers formerly limited to bracket contests now enjoy access to legal sportsbook options, they also plan to place traditional sports bets as March Madness returns.”

22 PA Powerball tickets split $3.3 million

According to the PA Lottery, twenty-two Powerball tickets with the $1 Power Play option won a combined total of $3.3 million in the last drawing. As a reminder, the winning numbers were 17 – 18 – 37 – 44 – 53 with a red Powerball of 18. The Power Play multipler was 3x.

Normally, when you win a third-place Powerball prize by matching four of the five white balls and the red Powerball, the prize is $50,000. However, just by adding on the optional $1 Power Play option, the prize multiplies to $150,000.

Two PA Lottery retailers located in Moutoursville, Lycoming County sold the vast majority of the tickets, 10 each. Your Choice Exxon located on 447 Broad St. and Turkey Hill located at 300 Broad Street receives a $5,000 bonus each for selling the winners.

MI lottery club claims $1.05 billion jackpot

A four-member Michigan lottery club called the Wolverine FLL Club, stepped forward to claim the historic $1.05 billion jackpot. As a recap, the winning numbers on Jan. 22 were 04 – 26 – 42 – 50 – 60 with a gold Mega Ball of 24. Additionally, Kroger located on 47650 Grand River Avenue in Novi, MI sold the winner.

According to the Wolverine FLL Club’s attorney and representative, Kurt D. Panouses, “A club member saw a sign that the jackpot was up to $1 billion and remembered that they hadn’t bought their tickets yet, so they pulled into the Kroger.”

The prize claimed was the lump-sum payment of $776 million. Finally, after paying 24% federal tax and 4.25% state tax, the take home for the club was around $557 million.

Online lottery sales

While the historic billion-dollar jackpot’s ticket was bought at a physical lottery retailer, there is another way. The PA online lottery offers you the safety and convenience of purchasing online without setting foot into a physical lottery retailer.

Outside of Pennsylvania, there are other states that allow for online lottery sales too:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New York

No matter how you choose to buy lottery tickets, please play responsibly.

Live! Philadelphia Hotel Top Safety Rating

Live! Casino Philadelphia is now listed as a Sharecare Health Security property in the Forbes Travel Guide. The parent company for Live!, Cordish, has a second casino in Hanover, Maryland, which also earned the honor.

The list is select, with just ten casino-hotels in the nation and only three other hotels in PA recognized.

Live! verification comes with a Forbes seal of approval

Verification assures that guests and travel planners can book at properties with health and safety procedures in place. The verification comes with an easily identifiable seal of approval – a Sharecare VERIFIED Forbes Travel Guide badge.

Earning the badge depends on a hotel’s compliance with validated best practices meant to minimize both the risks and impacts of COVID-19 and potential future health risks.

Play It Safe plan

Rob Norton, President of Cordish Gaming Group, said the company’s Play It Safe plan led to the designation of its properties.

He explained:

“Our comprehensive Play It Safe plan with best practices provided by the Centers for Disease Control, John Hopkins University School of Public Health and guidelines from the States of Maryland and Pennsylvania has enabled us to be leaders in the industry on health and safety.

“We’re proud to be verified by such a prestigious organization. We continue to stay vigilant at all our locations to meet and exceed COVID-19 safety guidelines.”

Live! must continually verify it meets standards

The comprehensive verification covers more than 360 standards. Included are health and hygiene protocols, cleaning products, sanitizing procedures, ventilation, physical distancing, the guest experience, and health safety communication.

Hotels must also verify their health protocols on an ongoing basis.

Filip Boyen, CEO of Forbes Travel Guide, explained:

“The pandemic has made it clear that hotels and resorts must, first and foremost, assure guests of their safety. By becoming VERIFIED, Live! Casinos & Hotels in Maryland and Philadelphia have demonstrated their commitment to creating a culture of accountability and following global best practices to heighten health security, verified by a third party.”

Online customer reviews praise the cleanliness

A scan of the patron reviews at the new facility shows customers have noticed Live!’s upkeep and safety measures.

“Omg, the Casino is so clean and lovely. It smells like it’s new right out of the box,” wrote one customer.

Another said, “Great place! Follows COVID rules. Great atmosphere.”

A third patron summed up, “This casino really stepped up during the COVID crisis to make the guest feel safe.”

Playin Pennsylvania recently published a three-part lead-up series highlighting all you can expect from the newest Philadelphia casino. Catch up here:

BWW and BetMGM Join Forces

Do you want a parlay with your wings?

BetMGM has teamed with Buffalo Wild Wings to serve up sports betting products to customers located inside the restaurant. The “sports betting experience” is being called the first of its kind and rolled out in six states including New Jersey on March 10.

Why wasn’t Pennsylvania in the initial launch and when will the BWW and BetMGM experience fly into Pennsylvania?

Representatives told Playin Pennsylvania that they plan to launch the partnership in Pennsylvania Buffalo Wild Wings, but the geolocation technology for the enhanced odds feature is not yet live in PA.

BetMGM and Buffalo Wild Wings promo details

There are about thirty Buffalo Wild Wings locations in Pennsylvania. The newest location opened in late 2020 at the King of Prussia Mall, the largest shopping mall on the East Coast.

The “meat” of the partnership is a new feature on the BetMGM online sportsbook app called “Blazin’ Bets.” Geolocation technology allows the sportsbook apps to determine if customers are in states where sports betting is legal. In this case, geolocation will allow the app to pinpoint customers physically inside a BWW.

The BetMGM and Buffalo Wild Wings promotion includes:

  • Exclusive curated boosts, bets, and parlays.
  • New users of the BetMGM app will receive a 100% deposit match in their account up to $500 and earn a $20 electronic gift card to Buffalo Wild Wings.

Rita Patel, Chief Marketing Officer at Buffalo Wild Wings said:

“Fans wagering on sports inside Buffalo Wild Wings can now win bigger on select bets thanks to our innovative partnership with BetMGM. As sports betting continues to grow throughout the country, we look forward to further expanding our footprint in the space and activating our partnership with BetMGM in ways that make the experience at our sports bars second to none.”

OT Odds and free-to-play games too

In addition, Buffalo Wild Wings launched an in-bar channel, OT Odds Powered by BetMGM. The network will air on some screens throughout participating BWWs nationwide. The show features sports betting content, live game odds, and fantasy and betting advice.

Buffalo Wild Wings’ Picks and Props free-to-play game, available via the Buffalo Wild Wings mobile app got a design upgrade. It now has an updated parlay-style gameplay with new BetMGM elements.

Customers can make picks daily using BetMGM odds from any state that permits free-to-play games. Major prizes awarded monthly and select winners will be inducted into the newly created BWW Hall of Fame.

Wings and sports go together. More similar partnerships to follow?

The pairing of a sports betting app and sports bar seems a match as natural as wings and a cold beer.

In 2019, Buffalo Wild Wings entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with BetMGM. Since the announcement, more than 500,000 users have participated in BWW and BetMGM free-to-play games.

Matt Prevost, Chief Revenue Officer, BetMGM, said,

“Our partnership with Buffalo Wild Wings is incredibly innovative and allows BetMGM to redefine how fans enjoy sports. The introduction of geolocation technology to offer bettors a customized experience in a Buffalo Wild Wings location is a great example of what we’re able to activate through this groundbreaking relationship.”

David Schwartz, a gambling historian at UNLV told the Denver Post:

“This partnership makes it clear that MGM — and I doubt it is alone here — is looking to expand its footprint in a time when visiting casino resorts isn’t necessary to gamble. I think that this is a glimpse into the kinds of partnerships we will see as physical locations try to leverage sports betting in a digital era.”

Record-breaking month for sports betting in PA

Usually a sportsbook arrives before an online casino but the reverse occurred in the case of BetMGM in Pennsylvania. BetMGM online casino launched in Pennsylvania on Dec. 4 2020 and the sportsbook app followed about two weeks later. And a BetMGM Poker app is expected in the near future.

Sports betting handle in Pennsylvania hit an all-time high in January, reaching $615.3 million. Revenue for January hit $34 million.

In its first full month, BetMGM had a handle of $39 million and $414,300 in revenue. It put the new sportsbook about fourth in terms of handle among PA’s twelve online sportsbooks.

Bettors backing Sixers to make championship run

At FanDuel Sportsbook, the 76ers are the most bet team to win the NBA Championship (20% of the bets) and the Eastern Conference (44% of the bets).

Three 76ers players lead the way in their respective markets at FanDuel.

  • MVP: Joel Embiid (+190), 20% of the bets.
  • Defensive Player of the Year: Ben Simmons (+260), 37% of the bets.
  • 6th Man of the Year: Shake Milton (+3000), 26% of the bets.

The 76ers are FanDuel’s biggest liability in the NBA Championship market and the Eastern Conference.

FanDuel’s Director of Publicity Kevin Hennessy commented to Playin Pennsylvania:

“FanDuel customers love backing the 76ers. It sure helps that they are performing well and the favorite team in two of our biggest markets in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.”

At DraftKings, the Sixers (+550) have the second-highest handle (22%) behind the Brooklyn Nets (+140) to win the Eastern Conference.

In the the NBA Championship futures market, the Los Angeles Lakers lead the way with 36% of the handle, followed by the Nets (26%) and the Sixers (9%).

NBA 2021 odds: Favorites, shifts and 76ers

At Pennsylvania online sportsbooks, the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets opened the season as favorites to win the NBA Championship.

A January trade that sent James Harden from the Houston Rockets to the Nets moved the Nets to the second-best odds to claim the NBA title. Over the NBA All-Star break, six-time All-Star forward Blake Griffin signed a deal with the Nets.

At the halfway point of the season, those four teams still have the lowest odds at sports betting apps. The Utah Jazz have seen the largest odds shift in the NBA Championship outright market. The Jazz opened at +4200 and are now +950.

  • DraftKings set the Sixers’ season win percentage at 58.5%. It is currently 65.7%.
  • Embiid scoring average was listed at 24.5. It is currently 29.8.

Embiid’s MVP climb

Joel Embiid might want to troll bookmakers who put him at +4000 to win the NBA MVP before the season started.

Perhaps he doesn’t have to unleash his ire via social media since he is letting his play on the court do the talking. In 29 games, Embiid has averaged 29.8 points, 3.3 assists, 11.3 rebounds, 1.2 steals, and 1.3 blocks.

On Feb. 20 against the Chicago Bulls, Embiid had a career-high 50 points along with 17 rebounds.

Here is how Embiid’s MVP odds dropped (odds via William Hill):

  • Preseason: +4000
  • Jan. 6: +2500
  • Jan. 12: +1200
  • Jan. 23: +500
  • March 1: +400 but it was as low as +350

The Sixers’ big man has also attracted the largest MVP wager thus far at William Hill. A Nevada bettor placed $5,000 on Embiid +500 for a total potential payout of $30,000.

As of All-Star Weekend, Embiid has passed LeBron James and now sits as the favorite at +200 at DraftKings. James is the leader for MVP handle (32%) at DraftKings, followed by Embiid (20%).

Most profitable NBA teams and players for bettors

  • Russell Westbrook
  • James Harden
  • CJ McCollum
  • Zion Williamson
  • Nikola Vucevic

Most profitable teams:

  • Brooklyn Nets
  • Chicago Bulls
  • Phoenix Suns
  • New York Knicks
  • Charlotte Hornets

Sixers bet boosts

Johnny Avello, the director of race and sportsbook operations for DraftKings, told Play NJ:

“He (Embiid) is playing really well. I think we can agree that we all thought Embiid would have a good season (he was one of the top-bet players before the season began), but this year he really is playing like an MVP.”

“Right now, he’s doing very well,” Avello said, “but I wouldn’t count out Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets, +450) and Luka Doncic (Dallas Mavericks, +1200) for the MVP. There’s still a lot of basketball to be played.”

The Story of the Secret Apartment in Veterans Stadium

Imagine living in the Philadelphia stadium where your teams, the Phillies and the Eagles, played their home games – the now-gone Veterans Stadium. Your own real-life sports refuge.

The stadium’s god-awful artificial turf served as something of a living room for your improvised secret apartment. The space is literally and figuratively hidden in plain sight in the left-field stands.

Sometimes the secret living space, a converted unused concession stand, was not always hidden.

Apartment perks like catching the end of a game in a robe

Consider a few highlights made possible by living in the apartment:

  • Catching the end of a rain-delayed doubleheader along with 200 die-hard fans while wearing a robe and flip-flops while sipping coffee brewed in the tricked-out apartment outfitted with a bed, sink, fridge, coffee maker, and hot plate in the 60-by-30 foot space.
  • Throwing half-time parties until their popularity grew too big to continue.
  • Hosting Eagles’ wives waiting for their husbands to drive home.
  • Meeting Tug McGraw, Dick Vermeil, and Julius Erving.
  • Becoming close friends with Eagles Hall of Famer Bill Bradley.

The secret apartment was where author Tom Garvey made his home from 1979 to 1981, including when the Phils won the World Series in 1980 behind McGraw’s pitching.

The 78-year-old Garvey is a native of Ridley Park in Delaware County (go Delco! – my own home county), the suburban area Southwest of Philly known for off-the-wall gritty characters.

Sports refuge grist for a book

Now a resident of tonier Ambler in Montgomery County, Garvey has detailed his living escapade in The Secret Apartment: Vet Stadium, A Surreal Memoir available on Amazon.

The Philadelphia Inquirer did an extensive feature after first independently confirming the existence of the apartment with sources. No pictures apparently exist of Garvey’s living space. The Vet came down in 2004. The demolition made way for Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field.

Garvey referred to his mystery digs as an “off-the-wall South Philly version of The Phantom of the Opera,” whose character lived in a hidden lair.

Life at the Vet also made him feel “like a kid with a Willy Wonka golden ticket.” He told the Inq:

“I always knew this was bizarre, but when I put it together and assembled the stories I thought ‘Holy God!’”

Refuge from service in Nam

His hidden sports refuge was especially significant because he used the space and his job overseeing parking and concessions as a means of coping. He had returned to civilian life from Vietnam, where he’d served in the Special Forces encamped near Cambodia.

Ironic, he found solace in a place named Veterans Stadium.

Garvey got the job via uncles, who held the contracts for parking lots and concession stands. The position came with keys to an obscure entrance and a key for his own office.

While working at the Vet in the fall of 1979, when it hosted Pope John Paul, he got the idea of setting up a living space. Soon he made it happen.

There was a shuttered doorway, but Garvey obscured the apartment behind it by arranging a wall of cardboard boxes. A corridor hid at one end, which opened up into the secret space, with a floor covered with the much-despised Astro-Turf left over from the field.

Garvey’s apartment was better than his own in Center City Philadelphia, Bill Bradley told the Inquirer.

The parking contract ended in 1981, which meant leaving the apartment.

Finding peace and healing in Veterans Stadium

But by then, Garvey was ready.

The place “gave me the opportunity to put things in perspective,” after Vietnam, Garvey recounted.

“I found it to be healing. It was a place where I went inside myself and found some peace.”
