Things to do when visiting Philadelphia
Watching basketball is your priority and you’ve already Googled the “best things to do” in Philadelphia. I’ve lived right outside of Philadelphia my whole life, so I’ll offer some personal “do it” or “skip it” insight based on Visit Philadelphia’s “Most Essential Things to do.”
- Get a photo in front of the Liberty Bell: The lines are really long on the weekend. If you are okay waiting, do it. If not, at least take a walk around Independence Hall.
- Pose with Rocky Statue. Skip it. Yes, the locals driving by are laughing at you. He’s a fictional character and you just stood in line for an hour to take a picture with him. There are statues of Dr. J and Joe Frazier outside of Xfinity Live. Real-life champs.
- Eat a cheeseteak. Do it…but not the tourist traps. While it takes endurance and maybe 50 tries to get through to Angelos in South Philly, some other spots locals love are John’s Roast Pork (for cheesesteaks and roast pork), Cleavers, and Phillip’s (which is right near the Wells Fargo Center.)
- Tour Independence Hall. Do it. And walk to nearby Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest street in America.
- Visit the famous LOVE sculpture. Do it. You’re in the City of Brotherly Love and it’s March Madness. What’s not to love?
- Go to the Reading Terminal. Definitely do it. One of the oldest farmers in America and full of a dizzying array of sites and smells. Your best bet of the weekend is a pork sandwich at DiNic’s.
- Museums on the Ben Franklin Parkway: Depends on how long you are here for and how much time you have. Showing my penchant for art and culture, can I recommend the Harry Potter exhibition at the Franklin Institute?
- Stroll through Longwood Gardens: Skip it. A bit of a drive from the basketball action.
- Explore Philly’s waterfront: Skip it. Not looking like a good weather weekend in Philly.
- Dine at acclaimed restaurants: Do it. Philadelphia just had 11 semifinalist nominations for the James Beard Award.
