Analysis of PA sports betting revenue

In the three months since Pennsylvania sports betting launched, the revenue keeps going up, up, and up some more.

November brought in $1.4 million in bets, while December jumped to $16.1 million.

The newest numbers from January doubled that amount, bringing in $32 million in wagers. Over the same period, the number of PA sportsbooks have jumped from one to three to six.

With six sportsbooks and NFL playoff football underway, we expected big numbers. While doubling month over month is certainly a feat, we were expecting a little more action and enthusiasm around the newest sportsbook launches.

It seems though that where the Philadelphia Eagles go, PA sports fans follow. Once the Eagles were bounced, the buzz and energy exited with them.

Still, it was a Philadelphia book that took the most action. SugarHouse Sportsbook took in almost $10.8 million, though generated only $100 grand in revenue. Meanwhile, December’s top dog, Rivers Sportsbook, brought in $9.5 million in bets and $853K in revenue.

The revenue king of the month was Parx, which managed to hold on $1.1 million of its $5.3 million in wagers.

Of the $32 million, $938K went to the state in the form of taxes.

While these numbers are nothing to scoff at, you can’t help but wonder how much online betting will bump the numbers…whenever it is that it finally arrives.
