After another week of surprises in NFL betting, the regular season is 25% of the way over and it is still difficult to tell who the contenders and pretenders are. Certainly, most did not think Tampa Bay was capable of putting up 55 points against the LA Rams. The Philadelphia Eagles brought PA sports fans a pleasant surprise with a road victory over Green Bay on Thursday.

The Steelers still have a Monday night game to play where the team could notch its first win. That does not mean we can’t start planning ahead to Week 5. With the Dolphins on bye, you would think there would be no heavily favored teams, but a closer look reveals that is not the case.

Patriots heavy favorites…again

More an indicator of an easy schedule than the team’s actual talent, the New England Patriots are more than two-touchdown favorites over the winless Washington Reedskins. This despite a lackluster showing and near loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4.

Washington will have a quarterback decision this week. During Week 4’s loss to the New York Giants, Case Keenum got benched in favor of rookie Dwayne Haskins, who subbed in and promptly threw a pick-six. Coach Jay Gruden would not commit to a starting QB on Sunday, so bettors will need to wait a couple of days before knowing which player will get the start.

Saints favored over surging Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Despite a lackluster showing on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys and the continued absence of Drew Brees, the Saints are favored by 5.5 points at home against Tampa Bay, which is fresh off a routing of the LA Rams. FanDuel put that number up before the Sunday night game, while SugarHouse kept the game off the board. Saints came away with the win Sunday night, but the performance was far from impressive in the low-scoring showdown.

Thursday Night Football should be a nail-biter

The closest game on the board according to the oddsmakers is the Thursday Night Football divisional battle between the Rams and the Seahawks. On Sunday night, SugarHouse had the Rams as one-point favorites, while FanDuel had Seattle by a point. Seattle does have home-field advantage, while the Rams look to bounce back from a rough home loss.
