Trashed million dollar ticket
A Clearwater, Florida local City Council member named Hoyt Hamilton, almost did not have a happy ending to his story. His story started at Publix where he stopped to buy a rotisserie chicken for his family’s dinner.
While at Publix, he asked the Publix cashier to check his tickets. Notably, Hamilton heard the familiar ding of a winning ticket. The machine then displayed the instructions of claiming his prize at the nearest Florida Lottery office.
Notably, the ticket did not have the typical “winning ticket” or “not a winner” printed on it. Thus, the cashier threw the ticket away in the trash. Hamilton thought about it two hours later and frantically raced back to Publix.
The cashier and employees helped empty her trash bin. Lucky for Hamilton, the ticket was still there and intact after about 10 minutes of searching. Lucky, indeed! Hamilton’s ticket was worth $1 million. He claimed the prize as a one-time payment, taking home $740k.
