Carson Wentz Trade Rumors, Odds

Carson Wentz, the Philadelphia Eagles’ franchise quarterback turned benched $128 million backup, has been the subject of trade rumors since he was sidelined at halftime during Week 13 against the Green Bay Packers.

The Tweet storms and rumors heated up when the season ended.

Where Wentz will land has been the source of much speculation. FanDuel posted the odds for Carson Wentz’ next team, which currently lists the Indianapolis Colts (-400) as the favorite, followed by the Chicago Bears (+380). However, you can only bet on where Wentz will play next at FanDuel … in Colorado.

What a Rocky Mountain downer.

Earlier this week the odds for top three favorites were:

  • Colts: -200
  • Bears: +250
  • Eagles: +400

The course of the divorce

Some could say that the rift between Wentz and the Eagles started when he tore his ACL in 2017 during an MVP season and Nick Foles took over to lead the Birds to the franchise’s first Super Bowl. Then Bud Light commissioned a statue of Foles and head coach Doug Pederson to be built inside Headhouse Plaza at Lincoln Financial Field. Imagine going to work every day and seeing that.

But for the sake of brevity, we’ll stick to the key points:

April: Eagles ignore other needs, like linebacker and secondary. Instead, they draft Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the NFL draft.

September: PA online sportsbooks put the Eagles’ win total at over/under 9.5. The Eagles start the 2020 NFL season with the seventh-best odds (+2000) to win Super Bowl LV, +1000 to win the NFC and +130 to win the NFC East. Wentz was +2500 to win NFL MVP.

October: The Eagles start 1-4-1.

December: With over a dozen offensive line combinations and an injured group of aging receivers, Wentz experiences historically awful regression. Over the course of 12 games, he is sacked 50 times. Wentz’s final stat line for 2020: 251/437, 2,620 yards, 16 TDs, 15 INTs. The 15 interceptions ties a league high.

Wentz is benched during halftime against the Packers. He doesn’t return to the field the rest of the season.

December/January: Hurts starts the final four games. The Eagles finish 4-11-1.

Timeline of Wentz trade rumors

  • Jan. 3: ESPN reports that the Wentz/Pederson relationship is “fractured beyond repair” and that Wentz plans to ask for a trade.
  • Jan. 24: Eagles hire Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni as their next head coach.
  • Feb. 6: ESPN reports the Eagles are looking for a “Matthew Stafford package” and a deal is coming “in the coming days.” The Colts, whose head coach is former Eagles OC Frank Reich, is among the teams interested, as are the Chicago Bears with a package that includes Foles.
  • Feb. 11: Ben Albright, an NFL reporter for in Denver, says the “Niners and (surprise) Texans have made calls that I’m aware of. Lot of ‘offers’ getting leaked, which usually means the team shopping a player is still fishing … Basically two or three teams in it, but not at Eagles’ price point. Leaks on ‘compensation’ coming from the Philly side, because they’re trying to get teams involved and drive the price up. Couple other teams called to inquire about price, but made no offer.”

Looking ahead to Eagles futures

The Eagles have the sixth pick in the 2021 NFL draft on April 29. In New Jersey, but not in Pennsylvania, you can bet on the NFL draft. A good rule of thumb in PA is if it takes place on the field of play and is directly related to the outcome of the game, you can bet on it. Since things like free agent/trade destinations and the NFL draft don’t happen “between the lines” of the playing field, you can’t bet on them in PA.

In New Jersey, current betting markets for the NFL draft include “No. 1 Overall Pick” and “Trevor Lawrence Team.”

In Pennsylvania, futures betting for next year’s (2021-22) NFL season is available. Philadelphia Eagles 2021-22 odds:

  • Super Bowl: +6600
  • NFC: +2800
  • Carson Wentz MVP: +4000
  • Jalen Hurts MVP: +10000

Perhaps due to the uncertainty at quarterback, future NFL bettors are shying away from the Eagles. At William Hill, the Eagles have the fewest total number of tickets and total dollars to win Super Bowl 56 in 2022.

Other NFL stars possibly on the move

Wentz isn’t the only big name possibly changing teams during the offseason. FanDuel in Colorado also has odds on where Deshaun Watson, J.J. Watt, and Russell Wilson will play.
