PASCOOP 2021 On Pace To Crush Guarantees

Pennsylvania online poker players, take a bow. Your collective efforts led to eclipsing the PokerStars PA SCOOP prize guarantees on the first weekend of events and that by a comfortable margin. Your success should breed more opportunities, too.

PokerStars’ Pennsylvania Spring Championship of Online Poker (PASCOOP) is still ongoing with many events remaining. Find the full schedule here.

Beyond PASCOOP, exciting times could be ahead for online poker players in the Keystone State if another market reaches maturity soon.

PokerStars PASCOOP guarantees quickly came and went

When PokerStars started PASCOOP on April 17, it guaranteed at least $280,000 in prizes over the first weekend. Over those two days, Pennsylvanians actually claimed $350,000 in prizes. In fact, the first 10 tournaments exceeded guarantees by an average of 40%.

That percentage dropped a bit over the following 11 tourneys, but still produced a respectable 16% above guarantees. Part of the success is due to PokerStars’ experimentation with expanding access to the events.

For the first time in a US Series event, PokerStars granted three buy-in tiers. The result was more players taking virtual seats in tournaments regardless of the size of their bankrolls. The math was simple from there; more players means more winnings.

That didn’t mean the tournaments with the highest buy-ins went neglected, either. The PASCOOP Event 04-H $100 buy-in Sunday Special actually attracted its largest field ever, totaling over 1,000 entries. Players split a pool of over $92,000, which was $17,000 more than the guarantee.

It isn’t too late to get in on PokerStars’ offerings in PA, either. Overall, PASCOOP guarantees over $2 million in prize pools and continues through May 3, with dozens of events still on tap. As a matter of fact, you can try it out for free this Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. That’s when PokerStars will offer a freeroll with no deposit necessary and a main event seat at stake.

That $300 Main Event goes down on May 2 with a guaranteed prize pool of $200,000. There are also smaller Main Events the same day priced at $75 ($40K GTD) and $30 ($20K GTD).

However, there could be a lot of action on the horizon should regulatory frameworks allow.

Playing poker across Lake Erie?

Online poker sites like PokerStars have also launched in Michigan, the lower peninsula of which is just across Lake Erie from PA. PokerStars is running its first MISCOOP next month, as a matter of fact.

So far, the regulatory landscape in MI does not allow for multi-jurisdiction play. The law in the Great Lakes State does allow for the MI Gaming Control Board to form compacts with regulatory bodies elsewhere, though.

There’s no telling how soon that could happen between MI and PA, but when it does, it would open up an entire host of potential new events for players in both states. If the same thing happens with New Jersey as well, then the possibilities grow exponentially.

Speaking of exponential growth, the prize pools for PA online poker players are on that same trajectory. With so many events and buy-in options, PokerStars PASCOOP is a can’t-miss event.

Florida’s youngest jackpot winner

The March 27 Powerball drawing had a jackpot worth $235 million. In fact, Thomas Yi, 23, from Land O’ Lakes, FL became the Sunshine State’s 15th jackpot winner while simultaneously gaining the title as the state’s youngest winner.

Yi stated:

“Even after matching all six numbers, I was in disbelief and took my ticket to a retailer to have it checked. The clerk at the counter instantly became excited and kept repeating that I had won the $235 million Powerball jackpot. I knew then that this would be life changing.”

The FL Lottery reported that Yi took the lump sum payment of just over $160 million after required taxes and withholding. Despite having a great deal of newfound wealth, Yi still intends to finish his college degree in either the business or medical field.

Play the online lottery

In Pennsylvania, you can buy and play the Powerball online. Moreover, the PA online lottery offers other lottery games like Mega Millions and more. Best of all, there is a welcome bonus for new players.

Outside of PA, there are other states where you can play the lottery online:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Different state lotteries benefit various state-run programs. In the Keystone State, the PA Lottery benefits older Pennsylvanians. Please play responsibly.

UFC 261 Specials at PA Sportsbooks

The sequel should be better.

The first time Jorge Masvidal faced UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, it was in the middle of the pandemic last July. Masvidal was a late substitute when the original opponent, Gilbert Burns, tested positive for COVID. So Masvidal took the fight on six days notice and had to scramble to make weight.

Masvidal was not his best and Usman dominated the fight with his grappling, en route to a rather one-sided decision.

But this time, things are different. Both fighters have had ample time to train. There will be no late surprises. And no excuses either.

So the sequel should be better.

PA sportsbooks offering specials for Masvidal vs. Usman

And Pennsylvania sportsbooks are working to advance that effort with a number of promotions built around the event. DraftKings is giving new users 26-1 odds on either main event fighter with a maximum $5 bet ($5 to win $130).

And FanDuel is providing a little leeway on parlays. Any user who places a 5+ Leg Parlay on the UFC 261 Event (max 1 leg per fight) can get a refund up to $25 in site credit if only one leg loses.

Let’s take a deeper look at Saturday’s MMA lineup and some of the available UFC wagers to get you ready for all the action.

Masvidal’s moneyline will pay out four times the money with an upset

In Saturday’s welterweight title main event, even with a much different lead-up, oddsmakers are expecting the same result. DraftKings has Usman as a sizable favorite with a moneyline price of -400. Masvidal is the underdog at +300

And for those interested in wagering beyond the moneyline, there are plenty of options for that as well. In fact, DraftKings has odds listed for each individual round.

  • Over 1.5: -715
  • Under 1.5: +425
  • Over 2.5: -360
  • Under 2.5: +250
  • Over 3.5: -250
  • Under 3.5: +180
  • Over 4.5: -190
  • Under 4.5: +140

Players can also wager on the method of victory, the winning round and whether or not the fight will go the distance.

Zhang Weili looks to win her 22nd straight fight

In addition to the welterweight clash, UFC 261 features a pair of intriguing female title bouts as well.

In the strawweight title match, Zhang Weili puts an impressive 21-match win streak on the line against former champion Rose Namajunas. As noted in a UFC preview, Namajunas beat Jessica Andrade in a split decision bout last July to earn her status as the No. 1 contender. Zhang enters the fight as the favorite at -200 at DraftKings while Namajunas is +165.

And in the women’s flyweight title match, Valentina Shevchenko looks to defend her title against Andrade, who followed her loss to Namajunas with a first round KO/TKO win over Katlyn Chookagian in October. In this fight, Shevchenko is a heavy favorite at -455 and Andrade is priced at +340.

The rest of Saturday’s card and the moneyline prices at DraftKings as of April 21 are as follows:

  • Uriah Hall (+100) vs. Chris Weidman (-125)
  • Anthony Smith (+160) vs. Jim Crute (-200)
  • Alex Oliveira (+125) vs. Randy Brown (-155)
  • Dwight Grant (-245) vs. Stefan Sekulic (+190)
  • Karl Roberson (+125) vs. Brendan Allen (-155)
  • Danaa Batgerel (-182) vs. Kevin Natividad (+150)
  • Kazula Vargas (+195) vs. Zhu Rong (-250)
  • Qileng Aori (-110) vs. Jeffrey Molina (-110)
  • Na Liang (+165) vs. Ariane Carnelossi (-210)
  • Johnny Munoz (-286) vs. Jamey Simmons (+220)

The DraftKings 261 Special daily fantasy contest will pay out $200k to first place

Saturday’s fight card, which will be broadcast live from the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, will begin with the early preliminaries at 6 p.m. on ESPN2/ESPN+. The main card moves to ESPN Pay-Per-View at 10 p.m.

And for those interested in playing some daily fantasy alongside the MMA action, there will be plenty of contests available. The featured contest at DraftKings has a $25 entry fee with a prize pool of $750k and a top prize of $200K.

Over at FanDuel, the $8.88 entry, Saturday UFC Octagon has a $100K prize pool and a first-place payout of $20k.

It all starts at 6 p.m.

And in the main event, Jorge Masvidal gets a chance to avenge his performance from last summer.

There’s been plenty of time to train and no surprises in camp either.

So there are no excuses.

The sequel should be better.

$4 million winner from Mountain Grove, MO

A lottery player that purchased a ticket in Missouri is now $4 million richer or will be, after claiming the ticket from the last drawing. As a reminder, last Friday’s winning numbers for the April 16 drawing were 17 – 27 – 28 – 50 – 55 and a Mega Ball of 25. Additionally, the Megaplier was 4X.

Murphy USA located on 2106 N. Main Avenue in Mountain Grove sold the winner. The ticket matched all five of the white balls, enough to claim the second-place prize of $1 million known as a Match 5 winner. However, the winner added on the optional $1 Megaplier option, which means the prize quadrupled to $4 million. Definitely, a worthwhile $1 investment.

In MO, winners have 180 days to claim their prizes. For a prize of this size, the owner of the ticket needs to sign the back and keep it safe. Then, an appointment must be set at one of the MO Lottery offices.

Buy online lottery tickets

There is another option; play and buy online lottery tickets. Skip the fuss and waiting in lines by purchasing your tickets online. In fact, the PA online lottery offers a welcome bonus for new players and unveils lots of fun, new and exciting games often.

Otherwise, there are other states where you can purchase lottery tickets online:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • New York

Win or lose, please play responsibly.

Philly Live Poker Room Review

Pennsylvania added a new poker room to the mix this past January. On Jan. 19, Live! Philadelphia opened the doors to the general public and along with the premier came a new room dedicated to the poker world.

Recently Playin Pennsylvania was able to make a trip to the new room and check out the amenities the casino had to offer.

Details on the Live! poker room

The Live! poker room is located in the back corner of the casino and sits by itself it its own private area. It includes 29 tables with charging capabilities for your phone or devices.

Players generally like the self-contained feel of a poker room. Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia does it right by catering to a poker player’s needs by including other conveniences in room, such as:

  • Private Bathroom
  • Poker Cashier
  • Free Wifi

“I like that Philly Live has its own cage in the poker room” says Matthew Neamand, a poker player from Delran, NJ. “Not having to lug racks of chips halfway across the casino is such a nice feature and should be standard in every cash room”

Poker and sports betting at Philadelphia Live!

For the sports bettor, the Live poker room is where the action will be this fall every Sunday. The casino is located in the Stadium District and is right next to Citizens Bank Park, home of the Phillies.

Live! is home to a retail FanDuel Sportsbook, but bettors need not stray from the poker room to get their bets in.

The room offers 24 large TVs and a row of sports betting kiosks right outside the poker room entrance.

“It’s honestly a sports bettor’s dream” says Chuck Aquino, an avid Eagles fan and poker player from Edgewater Park, NJ. “My plan when the Eagles have a home game is to tailgate in the morning, go to the game and then walk over, hit the poker room after and catch the rest of the Sunday action in the room. Seriously, tell me a better Sunday than that?”

Virus safety protocols in place

Currently the poker room is running seven-handed cash games. This number will most likely increase to nine-handed once COVID-19 restrictions are removed.

At the moment, the following safety protocols are in place for poker players at Live!:

  • Masks required
  • Thermal checks upon casino arrival
  • No eating in the poker room
  • Plexiglass dividers at all tables
  • Clean wipe downs before any new player sits

Tournaments and bonus promotions: Coming soon

Currently, the poker room is hosting a bad beat jackpot as their main promotion. At present, Live! Philadelphia does not have any additional promotions such as a daily high-hand giveaway. This is a popular promotion and helps get the room kick started each day.

While playing at the tables I spoke to a few dealers about upcoming plans. Most of the dealers remarked that the room was waiting for certain approvals from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board before launching High Hand promotions.

When asked about high hand promotions, dealers said that live daily and major tournaments were coming when safe to do so. COVID has continued to put a halt on casinos’ ability to play out big series like WPT and WSOP in the northeast. Some dealers also said that they believed they would be hosting major tournaments like their sister site Maryland Live! has done in the past.

So far, there is no plan for a Live! online poker room in the pipeline.

Live poker room holding the southern market

Live! Casino & Hotel Philadelphia has a lot of advantages at the moment when it comes to poker. Currently Delaware doesn’t have any live poker rooms open due to COVID. Also Harrah’s Philadelphia closed its poker room last year. This allows Live! Philly to be the main poker crop to the south of the city.

On top of that, Live! is the only casino in the city to have an exclusive hotel attached to it. Having a hotel close to the Stadium District and attached to the casino will definitely allow the casino to grasp an out-of-state market that comes to visit.

Currently there are now seven poker rooms open in Pennsylvania. Make sure to follow Playin Pennsylvania for future poker room reviews and up-to-date information on live tournaments.

Steelers 2021 Win Total Set At 8.5

It might be the last ride. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been a pretty competitive team with Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. But in recent years, Big Ben’s performance has suffered. Some wondered if Roethlisberger would even return this season.

But the Steelers and their long-time quarterback reached a compromise this offseason to reduce Roethlisberger’s cap number and keep their captain around.

It might very well be his last season. And yet, NFL oddsmakers seem to think Big Ben might be too far past his prime to carry the team very far. Even with the NFL adding another game this season, most PA online sports betting apps have the Steelers win total set at 8.5

Exactly average. Or mediocre. And that’s exactly what makes the futures bet so tantalizing. Because it’s pretty easy to conjure up a rational scenario for either side of the bet.

Why the Steelers could get to nine wins

The case for the over goes back to the beginning of last year. The Steelers started 11-0 before injuries, particularly on defense, led to some late-season stumbles and an early exit in the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs.

But with the defense healthy and most of the team’s core returning, it’s certainly possible that the Steelers could get to nine wins. Especially considering that the NFL is adding another game, making 17 total regular season games.

FOX Bet content integration specialist Jacob Blangsted-Barnor explained to Fox Sports how his sportsbook calculates win totals with the extra game.

“We look at the percentage chance that a team wins that extra game. Let’s say that the Chiefs have a 58% chance to beat the Packers. We would add .58 of a win to the Kansas City win total. [FOX Bet would round .58 down to .5 wins for betting purposes.] So if the Chiefs’ total is 12.5, we would bump them up to 13.”

And why Pittsburgh might finish under its total

But if you’re expecting the Steelers to finish under their mark, even with another game on the schedule, it’s likely you’re focusing on a few holes in the roster

Pittsburgh lost defensive end Bud Dupree in free agency. Pro Bowl center Maurkice Pouncey retired. And running back James Conner, a former Pitt Panther, signed with Arizona as well.

So Pittsburgh has some work to do in the NFL Draft, which starts with the first round next Thursday night (April 29) at 8 p.m.

And Pennsylvania doesn’t allow wagering on the draft, but there are plenty of odds listed in other states, including at New Jersey sportsbooks. Wagers are available on the first picks of the draft, draft positions of certain players and what position each team will select first.

Steelers to address needs, fill gaps in 2021 NFL Draft

According to BetMGM Sportsbook, the odds for the position of the Steelers’ first drafted player are as follows:

  • Offensive lineman: +180
  • Running back: +200
  • Cornerback: +400
  • Linebacker: +1000
  • Defensive lineman: +1600
  • Quarterback: +1800
  • Wide receiver: +2000
  • Safety: +2500
  • Tight end: +2500

In the first round, the Steelers pick at No. 24. Of course, trades are always possible in the NFL Draft, but if the Steelers stay at their spot, a frequent match in mock drafts is Alabama running back Najee Harris. ESPN’s Mel Kiper even sent Harris to the Steelers in his latest version. And counterpart Todd McShay listed running back first in his report on Pittsburgh’s team needs.

So a running back is likely to be selected by the Steelers at some point. The same goes for an offensive lineman and perhaps even a quarterback considering Roethlisberger’s status. For more on NFL Draft odds, see this preview from TheLines.

The Steelers 2021 season promises to be an interesting one

For many football fans, the NFL Draft signals the start of a new season. And for Pittsburgh, it’s a season filled with equal parts intrigue and uncertainty.

What will the future hold? Who will the team draft?

And which new players will join Big Ben in what figures to be his last ride?

AGA Report Warns Against Unregulated Gambling Devices

A report just released by the American Gaming Association (AGA) ties illegal gambling devices to criminal activity including money laundering, drug trafficking, and violent crime. Playin Pennsylvania earlier this month reported on a murder of a convenience store clerk that had a connection to an illegal video poker machine.

The AGA report also showed illegal gambling machines are not subjected to testing, licensing, taxes, or regulatory standards.

In announcing the report, the AGA said:

“Maintaining the integrity of the gaming industry and continuing to benefit our communities is a top priority. Casino gaming is now a legal, regulated industry in 44 states, generating over $261 billion in economic impact and $41 billion in direct tax revenue, supporting more than 1.8 million jobs nationwide.

“Illegal gambling machines have been found in dozens of states and continue to bypass these laws and regulations, harming communities and consumers nationwide.” [emphasis added]

Illegal machines ‘skilled at deception’

The AGA report is titled, “Skilled at Deception: How Unregulated Gaming Machines Endanger Consumers and Dilute Investments in Local Economies.”

Some key findings of the report:

  • Illegal devices have no responsible gaming components
  • Unregulated machines are unmonitored to ensure fair play
  • Unregulated operators lack training in responsible gaming
  • Unlicensed operators can lure children to gambling
  • Unregulated operators foster problem gambling behaviors
  • Lack of protection of consumer data

To combat the continuing spread of illegal machines, the report recommended:

  • Law enforcement and policymakers must prioritize robust enforcement
  • States and communities must not authorize these machines or risk harming regulated gaming
  • Lack of enforcement erodes regulations
  • Protect consumers

Illegal machines ‘erode public trust’

The regulated gaming industry and law enforcement have shared concerns, said the report.

The report quotes Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who was the former Director of the Arizona Department of Gaming:

“History has taught us that unregulated gambling gives rise to an array of legal and social concerns, and ultimately erodes public confidence in the safety and integrity of the whole gaming industry.”

AGA Vice President of Government Relations and Gaming Policy Counsel Jessica Feil said:

“Legal gaming provides immense benefits to the communities it serves – and operating with a gaming license is a privilege that our industry takes seriously.

“Unfortunately, there’s been a rapid increase of unregulated gaming machines that exist in the shadows, taking advantage of loopholes and flouting the law, with little to no oversight. These machines ultimately endanger consumers and communities, fueling problem gambling and crime while drawing important tax revenue away from states.”

State police in another jurisdiction decried the spread of illegal machines

In the report, Major Chuck McNeal of the Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division said:

“Organized criminal operations profit from the use of these machines and take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. State and local law enforcement must be on the front lines and partner with prosecutors to root out these machines from our communities.”

But the PA state police spokesman declined to comment on the report.

The PA SP had initially taken the lead in enforcement efforts in the Keystone State, but lately, regulation has fallen more to local agencies, such as the district attorneys in Berks and Delaware counties.

Enforcement falling to county District Attorney Offices

Illegal machines in Delco alone outnumbered legal machines operating throughout PA during the pandemic, Delco DA Jack Stollsteimer estimates.

Using enforcement grant funding from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, or PGCB, Delco recently seized 13 machines. And the county has more than 30 ongoing investigations of other illegal gaming device locations.

Stollsteimer and Berks DA John Adams both have complained of inaction on the state level. An illegal mini-casino operated in Adams’ jurisdiction until last year.

The PGCB does not have enforcement power over unlicensed machines. However, the agency does fund enforcement grants to local agencies, including Delco.

A spokesman said the PGCB would consider more than $1 million in additional enforcement grants during this month’s Board meeting.

PA Lottery claims to lose money to illegal machines

According to Ewa Swope of the PA Lottery, “There is no question that skill games continue to have an impact on Lottery sales and profit.”

She continued:

“Illegal machines are responsible for siphoning-off tens of millions of dollars otherwise destined to the Lottery Fund for senior programs. More senior funding is at risk every day if these machines continue to operate in Pennsylvania. That’s why the Lottery has advocated for lawmakers to support proposed legislation that addresses illegal skill games and protects funding for senior programs.”

PA AG has punted on unregulated devices

Last June, PA Attorney General Josh Shapiro had quietly dropped pursuing illegal device cases, Playin Pennsylvania discovered.

At the time, his office said:

“The question of whether ‘skill games’ are legal is currently pending before the Commonwealth Court and OAG is representing State Police and the Department of Revenue in that litigation. While we continue to maintain that “skill games” are illegal, as an agency, we have elected not to actively seize machines until the Commonwealth Court provides guidance on the issue.”

Likewise, the PA Legislature has continued to kick the can. Lawmakers are not tackling either setting up a process for licensing, testing, taxing and regulating the devices. Nor are they clearly defining the machines as illegal and actively enforcing their regulation.

PA gaming industry group: “Time to unplug these machines”

Danielle Gross, a spokesperson for Pennsylvanians Against Illegal Gaming, said:

“This report should end any doubt whatsoever: it is time to unplug these machines and get them out of our state. Illegal so-called skills games entice children to gamble. They are draining hundreds of millions from our state lottery.

“It is the only lottery in the nation that dedicates all funding to seniors. These machines are magnets for crime. We are seeing more and more media reports about crimes driven by illegal slot machines.”

One maker says criticism does not apply to Pennsylvania Skills game

Mike Barley, a spokesman for Pace-O-Matic, the maker of Pennsylvania Skills games, agrees the games are spreading. But he argues the criticism does not apply to his company.

“This report highlights the dangers of illegal gambling devices, and we agree that they are proliferating and often appearing in mini-casinos. Unlike those games, Pace-O-Matic’s Pennsylvania Skill game has been adjudicated and ruled a legal game of predominant skill by a Court of Common Pleas. We have since brought a lawsuit against the Commonwealth to cement the legal status of our games.

“An independent study from a well-known Pennsylvania economist has proven there is no impact on casino or lottery revenues from the play of legal skill games. The revenues of both the lottery and casinos continue to rise to record levels. Unlike the out-of-state companies operating in the lottery or casino space, over 90% of the profits generated from legal skill games stay in the Commonwealth.

“Additionally, Pace-O-Matic has taken the lead in fighting for regulation and the application of additional taxes on skill devices. We have had success and are currently regulated and taxed in Wyoming, Georgia, Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

“We have built tremendous support for legal skill games in the Pennsylvania legislature and remain confident that we are on a path toward regulation in the Commonwealth.”

Two $100k PA winners

In Pennsylvania specifically, there were two $100,000 Powerball tickets sold for the last drawing. These two winning tickets matched four of the five white balls. As a reminder, the winning numbers were 13 – 30 – 33 – 45 – 61.

Typically, third-place prizes are worth $50,000. However, these two tickets added on the $1 Power Play option, doubling the prize to $100,000.

The two winners were sold at:

  1. Mirabito Convenience Store located on 655 Route 739 in Hawley.
  2. TOPS Friendly Market at Bradford Towne Center located on 136 Ennis Lane, Towanda.

Both lottery retailers earn a $500 bonus for selling the winners. In Pennsylvania, winners have one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prizes.

Online NC lottery ticket wins $1 million

The last drawing of the Mega Millions jackpot on Tuesday, April 13, had one big second-place winner. Moreover, according to the NC Education lottery, the ticket was purchased online directly through the website.

As a recap, the $2 ticket with no additional $1 Megaplier matched all five white balls drawn, which were 10 – 15 – 19 – 45 – 68. However, the winner barely missed winning the whole jackpot by not matching the Mega Ball drawn, which was 9. Nonetheless, the ticket is still worth $1 million in prize money.

In NC, players have 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the prize.

PA online lottery tickets

In the Keystone State, you can buy lottery tickets online as well. Through the state-run PA online lottery, you can purchase tickets to tonight’s Mega Millions drawing.

Moreover, besides just buying your tickets through the website, there is also a mobile app. In fact the mobile app offers more convenience because you can play on the go, provided you are within the state borders of Pennsylvania.

Other than PA and NC, there are other states that offer online lottery sales as well:

  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • New Hampshire
  • North Dakota
  • New York

Have a great weekend and please play responsibly.

PA Gaming Revenue Strikes Gold in March

Revenue figures from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) are staggering, with total revenue from all forms of regulated gambling generating more than $403.1 million in March.

That’s a 162% increase compared to March a year ago when anti-virus protocols mandated by the state shut down many forms of wagering.

The March 2021 figure is the first month the combined revenue exceeded $400 million. The previous high was October 2020, when revenue was $320.2 million.

Combining the first three months of 2021, this was the first time PA gaming revenue topped $1 billion in a single quarter.

Online casino and sports betting continue strong in PA

Placing the numbers in the COVID-19 context, this March’s revenue figures were 27% above March 2019, when the total revenue was nearly $316.3 million.

Online gaming revenue in March approached $100 million.

PA sportsbooks took $560.3 million in bets while earning about $29.3 million in revenue. Of all sports wagers placed in March, 91% were made online.

The aggregate revenue number includes slot machines, table games, internet gaming, retail and online sports wagering, fantasy contests, and video gaming terminals.

With record revenue, comes a record tax haul

The huge revenue number also meant a record month for total taxes, with state and local entities claiming $166.8 million.

Of that massive haul, land-based slots account for the majority, but iGaming is also pulling its weight, responsible for nearly a quarter of tax revenue.

PA tax breakdown by gaming vertical in March

  • Slots (land-based): 61.0%
  • Tables (land-based): 6.9%
  • iGaming: 24.5%
  • Sports betting: 6.3%
  • VGT: 1.1%

PA slots revenue dropped compared to 2019

March’s gross revenue from slots was nearly $199.3 million, a 127.6% increase in revenue compared to the more than $87.5 million generated a year ago when the virus restrictions closed casinos for half the month.

But when comparing pre-pandemic slot revenue from March 2019 to this March, there was a 12% decrease with nearly $226.6 million two years ago.

The number of slot machines operating in March 2021 was 19,727 compared to 24,104 the year before.

Tax revenue from slots this March was more than $101.7 million.

Table games revenue also down from two years ago

Table games revenue was more than $71.3 million, an increase of 115.6% from the previous March when revenue topped $33.1 million.

But the March 2019 comparison to March 2021 shows a 14% decrease with $82.5 million two years back.

Total tax revenue from table games play this March 2021 was nearly $11.5 million.

Online casino revenue

PA online casino games including online poker generated gross revenue of nearly $97.7 million this March compared to nearly $24.9 million in March 2020 when there were far fewer gaming sites. In March, the revenue for iGaming was the highest to date, eclipsing the previous record $80.4 million in January 2021.

Tax revenue generated from internet gaming during March 2021 was nearly $40.9 million.

Sports betting, VGTs and DFS pitch in too

Taxable revenue during March 2021 for sports wagering topped more than $29.3 million. In March of last year, the amount was around $6.9 million, thanks in part to the sudden shutdown of the sports calendar. Sports betting contributed $10.6 million to the tax revenue for the month.

Total adjusted revenue for March 2021 for VGTs was more than $3.6 million. By the close of March, four VGT operators had the maximum permitted five machines at 44 truck stops.

VGT revenue in March set a new record, eclipsing the previous high of more than $2.5 million in February of this year.

Daily Fantasy contests revenue was nearly $1.8 million, an increase of 148.5% over March 2020, when revenue was $724,000.
