Reflecting on PokerStars PA Year One

Blow out that candle. This week, PokerStars PA marks the completion of one full year dealing virtual hands to Pennsylvania online poker players.

With the Mount Airy Casino Resort in Mount Pocono as its retail partner, PokerStars PA spent its entire first year as the only operating online poker site for Pennsylvania players.

It was a year highlighted by numerous tournament series and other events, all serving to establish PokerStars PA’s primacy at the start of the new era of online poker in the Keystone State.

PokerStars returns to PA after nearly nine years away

On Monday, Nov. 4, 2019, PokerStars Pennsylvania launched both its online casino and online poker room. After a couple of soft-launch partial days under the watchful eyes of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), the site went 24/7 on Nov. 6.

Those downloading the client gained access to both the online casino and online poker room. Also, for sports bettors, the Fox Bet Sportsbook was just a click away.

It was the first time since April 2011 that online poker players in Pennsylvania were able to play on PokerStars. Early indications revealed that they were enthusiastic to play on the site again.

There was another factor likely affecting players’ eagerness to sit down at the virtual tables. It had taken two full years for the first online poker site to launch after PA legalized online gambling in late 2017.

A warm welcome to the commonwealth

PokerStars PA marked the occasion right away with a 50-event Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker series starting at the end of November. Turnouts were larger than expected, with prize pools routinely exceeding events’ guarantees. In fact, in some cases, the prize pools doubled or tripled them.

That encouraged PokerStars to up the guarantees for several of the later PACOOP events. What had been $1 million in total guarantees was increased an extra $225K. Ultimately, the series awarded nearly $1.56 million.

Thus began what evolved into a regular series of announcements regarding new tournament series throughout 2020. Indeed, it seemed there was always either a series happening on PokerStars PA or a new one just around corner.

Tournament series central to site’s Year One strategy

It makes sense that PokerStars PA kept the tournament series coming. As turnouts for series’ events consistently demonstrated, they were giving PA players what they wanted.

While a few scattered tournaments had overlays, the majority again bested guarantees. Also, in every case, the series’ overall prize pools exceeded the events’ total guarantees.

Here’s a summary showing how PokerStars PA’s major tournament series went during the site’s first year.

PokerStars PA first-year tournament series stats

PokerStars PA Tournament SeriesEventsTotal GuaranteesTotal Payouts
PACOOP (Nov. 30-Dec. 15, 2019)50$1,225,000$1,559,767

Bounty Builder (July 12-26, 2020)70$1,502,000$1,968,721
PACOOP (Sep. 19-Oct. 5, 2020)50$1,500,000$2,039,133

Year One PokerStars PA tournament highlights

As shown, tournament series participation peaked in April with the PokerStars PA Spring Championship of Online Poker. Awarding over $3.2 million altogether, PASCOOP culminated with a huge Main Event featuring a $368,200 prize pool.

At the time, that was the largest prize pool ever for an online poker tournament in Pennsylvania. PokerStars PA would go on to break that record on a couple of occasions with special one-off tournaments called Pennsyl-MANIA.

Both Pennsyl-MANIA tournaments were $200 buy-in, two-day events allowing up to five entries. The first Pennsyl-MANIA in May more than doubled its $250K guarantee, drawing 2,774 total entries and creating a $515,964 prize pool to set a new all-time high.

The second Pennsyl-MANIA in August came with a $350K guarantee. That one attracted 2,026 total entries and awarded $376,836.

The focus on tournament series will no doubt continue into PokerStars PA’s second year. Indeed, it has already announced another one, the 35-event PokerStars 1st Anniversary Series with $1 million in guarantees, happening Nov. 8-16.

Strong spring revenue numbers highlight of first year

In terms of the site’s overall performance, those spring months were by far the strongest for PokerStars PA.

Being the only online poker site operating in the state was already a plus for PokerStars PA. But the forced closure of live poker rooms starting in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic no doubt increased online traffic even further.

Even when PA casinos started to open again in June, poker rooms remained closed per state regulators’ COVID-19 Casino Reopening Protocols. Some casinos started submitting reopening plans for their poker rooms to the PGCB last month, and by now a few have reopened with extensive safety protocols and limited capacity.

In terms of overall revenue, online poker exceeded PokerStars online casino (slots and table games) until May. Online poker revenue peaked in April 2020 at just over $5.25 million, while online casino brought in $5.20 million.

More recently, monthly totals for online have settled back closer to what the site earned during its first months, while casino maintains the momentum it gained during the pandemic closures. PokerStars Casino revenue peaked in May with $6.29 million, and these verticals have brought in $37.74 million in revenue in year one (through September). Compare that with $32.74 million for online poker.

Here’s a month-by-month overview of PokerStars PA revenue totals for its first year, with the October figures still pending.

September 2020$2,376,045$380,167
Total to date:$32,741,652$5,218,150

PokerStars PA looks ahead to Year Two

Looking ahead, PokerStars PA will no longer enjoy its Pennsylvania online poker monopoly during its second year. Having cleared regulators’ hurdles, other online poker sites are expected to launch in the state in 2021, among them WSOP.com and partypoker.

Meanwhile, the new year will see PokerStars Michigan launching an online poker site in to go along with its sites in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It will be interesting to find out if PokerStars positions itself to enjoy a head start in MI much as it was able to in PA.

It will also be interesting to see how PokerStars PA fares in Year Two, as well as how Pennsylvania online poker players react when new options arrive in 2021.

$100k PA Powerball winner in Berks County

As a recap, the last drawing on Wednesday, March 24, had winning numbers of 4 – 9 – 17 – 27 – 38 with a red Powerball of 18. Additionally, the optional $1 Power Play multiplier was 2X. Nationwide, there was one Match 5 $1 million winner from Washington, meaning the ticket matched all five white numbers.

The PA Lottery announced that there was a $100,000 ticket sold for the last drawing at Exxon Mart located on 308 E. Wyomissing Ave. in Mohnton. Exxon Mart earns an additional $500 bonus for selling the winner.

In fact, the ticket matched four of the five white balls plus the Powerball. Typically, this third-place prize is worth $50,000. However, the lucky winner added on the $1 Power Play multiplier, doubling the prize to $100,000.

Lottery tickets for purchase online

There’s also an alternative to buying lottery tickets from a physical retailer. The PA online lottery offers you the ability to buy your tickets on your mobile device or desktop.

Overall, there’s really no downside to buying your tickets online. Winning tickets receive automatic notification and the vast majority of prizes are paid directly into your player account.

Even if you are not located in PA, there are other states that offer online lottery tickets as well:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Best of luck to you, please play responsibly.

PA online sports betting is not underway yet. Nonetheless, Pennsylvania bettors are already taking advantage of ways to bet without interacting with another human.

What does that entail?

Kiosks.

Kiosks responsible for 75% of PA sports bets

Betting kiosks are a huge part of the PA retail sportsbook environment. At many properties, like Parx, the presence of kiosks means bettors don’t even have to enter the sportsbook to get in on the action.

The result is staggering. According to Kambi, which provides sports betting kiosks for SugarHouse, Rivers Casino Sports, and Parx and its two OTB parlors, roughly 75% of wagers are placed on a kiosk. On one property, that number is 88%. Three out of every four bets coming through the machines indicates that face-to-face interactions will play a minimal role in the market.

If the NJ betting scene is any indication, 80% of bets will be placed on an app when they launch in the Keystone State. That means, in a mature market, as few as 5% of total bets will be placed at a betting counter.

What is the appeal of kiosk betting?

Kambi sports betting kioskAccording to Max Bichsel, Kambi’s US director, the kiosk numbers even caught them off guard.

“In December … we were a little bit surprised,” Bichsel said. “Initially, we didn’t even have time to really have an expectation over what it was going to be. We just knew there would be a desire for it. We just didn’t anticipate the level of it.”

With the growing presence of kiosks in all facets of life, though, people are not as intimidated to try and bet on one. Be it the airport, the grocery store, or the bank, there are kiosk options that can save consumers time and effort. For those who find interacting with people mentally taxing, the lack of another human in the process is an added perk. Bichsel agrees about the appeal:

“It gets people to come through and they can move at their own pace, and they can also see a lot more than they would from over the counter if I’m behind and breathing down their neck.”

It helps, too, that Kambi’s products are fairly intuitive for the customer to use.

“Every once in a while you’ll have people that will ask, ‘How do I place this type of exotic bet?’ or ‘Where do I find the features for the PGA Championship this week?’, or ‘How do I find something very specific?’, Bichsel explained. “Those operators have at least someone floating around at the bay of kiosks or where they’re concentrated, and they’re able to help service those customers. But, after a few times, we see that learning curve expedites itself from where people can figure things out very, very quickly.”

Kiosks’ ease of access plays a role, too

Another benefit of kiosks is that they effectively make the sportsbooks a 24/7 operation. Yes, the retail book has posted hours, but the machines are accessible round the clock.

Bichsel used the machines near casino pker rooms as an example.

“They have several kiosks in a poker room, so … you’ll see (people) them at them. At the times they are open, they get considerable use outside the normal business hours of the casino business. … So, if there’s a West Coast basketball game in the NBA, you can get a second half that starts around midnight East Coast. Those are typically hours of a sportsbook in some cases, depending on the day. So, we are seeing them get used immensely by the parts of the casino where they’re strategically placed.”

What helps during these off hours is that bettors can use the winning paper ticket of another bet to fund a new one via the kiosk. Unlike other betting kiosk options, where bettors must cash a ticket at the counter, Kambi allows bettors to fund bets with winning bet slips. The next step is, hopefully, to offer the option of using a slots slip to do the same.

Bettors will be ready when online launches

Finally, there is an ancillary benefit to kiosks for PA casinos. Namely, that customers will grow increasingly familiar with the interface when the betting apps finally do launch. For many, the additional interaction with the online “bet builder” functionality at Kambi properties also gives a glimpse of what to expect.

Bichsel agrees that the time to familiarize with technology is beneficial. At the end of the day, though, he also believes there will be a core group of bettors that prefer the kiosk experience.

“I think there’s a bunch of different types of consumers and there are some that really prefer the kiosks. There are also people that really prefer the interaction of dealing with a cashier or ticket writer because that’s what they’re used to and that’s what they prefer. That’s why they go to the properties to engage with those people. And then there’s the other side of the coin where people want to do it from the comfort of their homes and at their leisure.”

It is not clear yet how many people fall into each category. However, based on the numbers, it is safe to say that even with online betting, kiosks will continue to play an important role in the PA betting space.

Table tennis dominates sports betting market for now

The NHL, NBA and MLB seasons are in limbo as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. But it doesn’t mean Pennsylvania sportsbooks‘ cupboards are bare.

There are still live sports to bet on and plenty of diverse futures markets. Here, we give you the full rundown on betting options that still remain in PA.

Table Tennis dominates new betting landscape

Currently, during this unprecedented time for the country and for sports, table tennis is the main draw.

Since March 22, table tennis has been the top sport bet each day at PlaySugarHouse and BetRivers Sports Book. Reps from PlaySugarHouse acknowledge that bettors have been denied March Madness action and the start of the MLB season.

The operators tout the rapid pace and live-streamed events of table tennis for capturing bettors’ interest. Table tennis matches are best-of-five and each requires 11 points to win and a player must win by at least two points.

Mattias Stetz, C.O.O of Rush Street Interactive, which operates PlaySugarHouse.com and BetRivers.com said:

“Ping Pong has the same characteristics as popular betting sports like tennis or baseball, but the game is faster. It is a perfect game for live betting in that it starts and stops all the time, with very fast changes in momentum.”

DraftKings Sportsbook director of operations Johnny Avello told The Lines:

“If you had asked me that question two weeks ago – ‘What are people betting on?’ – and the answer was table tennis, I would have asked you what planet you are living on. I am absolutely shocked by the amount of money being wagered on this sport.”

Live betting options still in play

There are a number of sports, including table tennis available for live betting and an immediate payout despite many coronavirus cancellations.

Single game/match odds are available at PA online betting apps for the following:

  • Table tennis: Moscow Liga
  • Table tennis: Setka Cup
  • Darts: Modus Icons
  • Belarussian soccer
  • Nicaraguan soccer
  • U20 Liga Pimera Juvenil soccer
  • Chinese Taipei basketball
  • Liga Pro short hockey
  • Korean baseball league (May 5)
  • MMA: UFC 249 (May 9)
  • Horse racing (PABets from TVG and FanDuel Racebook only. Races are currently limited.)

When traditional sports leagues will return is anyone’s guess. But for now, here’s what you can wager on (and where), looking ahead to future sporting events.

DraftKings launches live streaming

FanDuel started streaming select NHL games directly within its app in early March. BetRivers/PlaySugarHouse also streams some live sports. However, the coronavirus put a pause to the momentum of the feature.

If the NHL, NBA and MLB return by late July, I’m going to need all the screens and streaming I can get.

DraftKings expanded its partnership with Sportradar to launch mobile live streaming in its app. DraftKings users who are logged into their active accounts and have a wallet balance above $0.00 will be able to stream games directly within the app.

DraftKings customers in Pennsylvania and certain other states can stream Korea Baseball Organization and Bundesliga. When other leagues resume play, the operator says it will explore potential expansion opportunities of the live-stream functionality.

Ezra Kucharz, chief business officer at DraftKings, commented in a press release:

“With a focus on innovation, we are excited to further enhance our product offerings to include a convenient, state-of-the-art experience through live entertainment. At this difficult time for sports fans across the nation, we have extended our partnership with Sportradar to bring customers the best in-app experience from the safety and comfort of their homes, and closer to the games and players they love.”

The Match sets record for most-bet

Four masters of their respective fields gave a starving audience something to watch and bet on.

Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning defeated the team of Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in “The Match 2: Champions for Charity.” It was the most wagered-on non-major golf event in the history of BetRivers and PlaySugarHouse.

Leading up to the event, Mickelson and Brady received the early backing with 70% of handle. In the end, Woods and Manning received 60% of the handle to win. Only 30% of the handle was on the outright match-winner. The rest was placed on various side props and live betting.

An Audubon, Pennsylvania woman won the biggest Divine Fortune Jackpot in the history of the United States. She started playing online PlaySugarHouse last month, and hit the $533,239.70 jackpot late Tuesday evening.

The popular progressive slot is only available in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. This is the 14th Divine Fortune jackpot at PlaySugarHouse.com in Pennsylvania since its launch last summer.

Have Mercy

PlaySugarHouse’s sister site, BetRivers, also had a big winner.

Closing the book

For those of you who still have Super Bowl LII on their DVR (guilty), a replay of Brandon Graham strip sacking Tom Brady still moves us to tears. Eagles fans will never forget it…and neither will Brady.

Is it Philadelphia's year to bring home a title?

The Philadelphia 76ers won their last NBA Championship in 1983, 11 years before Joel Embiid was born and 13 years before Ben Simmons‘ birth.

The Philadelphia Flyers’ championship drought is even longer. They last hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1975. Nine years later, the oldest player on their current roster was born (Nate Thompson). A quarter-century later, Joel Farabee, the youngest player, was born.

Despite the fact that they would have to watch the teams’ titles on VHS, many aren’t scared off by the lack of championship pedigrees. The Flyers and the 76ers are among bettors’ favorites at PA online sportsbooks to win the respective championships.

FanDuel sees uptick in 76ers interest

The Philadelphia 76ers are a popular play at the FanDuel online sportsbook. FanDuel says that over the last two weeks, they have seen quite an uptick in interest in the 76ers.

Overall, the 76ers rank No. 2 in handle and No. 2 in total bets in the NBA Championship outright market. They have accounted for more than 25% of bets in the outright market. It makes them a significant liability for the book.

76ers odds at FanDuel:

  • NBA Championship: +2000
  • Eastern Conference winner: +700

Lakers and 76ers lead the way at DraftKings

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers (+250) are the favorite to win the NBA Championship at DraftKings PA. They are also pulling in the highest percentage of handle (33%) and bets (31%) at DraftKings. The 76ers have the second-highest amount (16% of handle/31% of bets).

The 76ers’ last trip to the NBA finals was in 2001, and Embiid and Simmons have yet to advance past the second round of the playoffs. However, the 76ers are tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for percentage of handle (31%) to win the Eastern Conference and slightly edge them out for percentage of total of bets (29%).

Underdog Rangers a popular pick at FanDuel, Flyers not far behind

At FanDuel online sportsbook, the New York Rangers (+4000), the 11th-place team in the Eastern Conference, who will play the Carolina Hurricanes in a qualifying series, are getting the most backing. However, the Flyers rank right behind them for total bets to win the Stanley Cup.

FanDuel Stanley Cup winner top teams by bet count:

  • Rangers
  • Flyers
  • Bruins
  • Lightning
  • Avalanche

By handle:

  • Rangers
  • Bruins
  • Flyers
  • Lightning
  • Avalanche

Philadelphia Flyers odds at FanDuel:

  • Stanley Cup winner: +1000
  • Eastern Conference winner: +500

Flyers a favorite for NHL bettors at DraftKings

At DraftKings online sportsbook, the Philadelphia Flyers account for the second-highest percent of handle (13%) and percent of total bets (12%) to win the Stanley Cup.

Even if the Flyers don’t win the Cup, bettors are bullish on the Broad Street Bullies to win the Eastern Conference. The Flyers are tops, with 18% of the handle and 21% of total bets placed.

Philadelphia Flyers odds at DraftKings:

Stanley Cup winner: +1000

Eastern Conference winner: +550

No. 1 seed, Eastern Conference: +550

Conn Smythe winner:

  • Sean Couturier: +2700
  • Claude Giroux: +4000
  • Carter Hart: +5000

How Pennsylvanians are betting on the NBA and NHL

A BetRivers Pennsylvania/PlaySugarHouse representative gave Playin Pennsylvania a breakdown of how Pennsylvanians are wagering on the NBA and NHL.

The 76ers lead the way with 43% of handle and 24% of bets to win the NBA title. The Los Angeles Clippers (16%) and Lakers (15%) round out the top three.

On the ice, the team on the western side of the state is earning commonwealth bettors’ backing. The Pittsburgh Penguins lead with 68.5% of handle and 49% of bets to win the Stanley Cup. The Flyers are a distant second with 10% of handle and 10% bets.

Philadelphia Flyers odds at BetRivers/PlaySugarHouse:

  • Stanley Cup winner: +1000
  • Eastern Conference winner: +550

Pittsburgh Penguins odds at BetRivers/PlaySugarHouse:

  • Stanley Cup winner: +1500
  • Eastern Conference winner: +850

 Flyers/Penguins Conn Smythe odds:

  • Sean Couturier: +2700
  • Sidney Crosby: +3000
  • Jake Guentzel: +3500
  • Evgeni Malkin: +3500
  • Claude Giroux: +4000
  • Carter Hart: +5000
  • Kris Letang: +15000

Maybe it’s not the team or the bowl game Penn State fans were hoping for.

For a while, they were smelling roses, expecting some other Power 5 team. Instead, when the bowl games were announced, the Nittany Lions drew Memphis from the American Athletic Conference in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

Maybe it’s not the matchup everyone was hoping for. There’s still plenty to be excited about for Penn State fans though.

For starters, the game will be played at the Dallas Cowboys’ stadium: Jerry’s World. It’s nickname inspired by Dallas’ owner Jerry Jones. Football fans are probably familiar with it, especially in light of the Philadelphia Eagles’ win over the Dallas Cowboys there just yesterday.

The Cotton Bowl is a big-time bowl game with a storied tradition. This year, Penn State is projected to win it. FanDuel Sportsbook currently has them as a seven-point favorite heading into Saturday’s game at noon on ESPN.

James Franklin seeking third bowl win at Penn State

Penn State head coach James Franklin is currently 2-3 in bowl games at Penn State, with his most recent bowl victory in the 2017 Fiesta Bowl. On the other sideline, Memphis will be sporting a brand-new coach after previous head coach Mike Norvell left the program earlier this month for Florida State.

The coaching transition could be helping Penn State a little in regard to the point spread. FanDuel has Penn State at -260 on the moneyline. Memphis is +205. Here is a look at the latest Cotton Bowl odds:

[odds-feed game=10242 sportsbooks=DraftKings,FanDuel,RiversCasinoPA styling=small odds=pointspread]

BetRivers has more than 30 wagers posted for the Cotton Bowl

Beyond the point spread, players will have plenty of options for wagering on Saturday’s game. BetRivers PA has alternate spreads available in a range of seven points from the standard line. Memphis has odds available from +14 to a pick. Penn State ranges from -14 to a pick on the other side.

FanDuel has the game’s total set at 59.5 points

Oddsmakers are expecting a good bit of offense in this year’s Cotton Bowl, with the game total set just under 60 points at FanDuel. DraftKings has the number at 60.5 points. Penn State has scored more than 24 points in four of its last five games. And Memphis has eclipsed 28 points in five-straight games.

It will be interesting to see if the Nittany Lions time off (the team’s last game was on Nov. 30) and Memphis’ coaching change affect those offensive outputs.

A number of sportsbooks have alternate totals available, ranging from 53.5 – 67.5 points.

Over at FanDuel, there are individual team totals posted for Saturday’s game. Penn State’s number is set at 33 points. Memphis’ number is 26 points.

Parx also has prop bets posted for the contest

Prop bets could also provide another entry point into Saturday’s action for those seeking different wagers. Parx Sportsbook has Penn State at -155 as the first team to score. Memphis is +114.

There are also lines available on the spreads and total for the first quarter and the first half. The Nittany Lions are -130 on the first quarter moneyline. The Tigers are +230. A tie is +375. The first-quarter total is 13.5. The first half moneyline has Penn State at -167 and Memphis at +170. A tie is +1150.

Saturday’s four-game schedule provides parlay possibilities

If you’re looking to build a parlay bet with the Penn State game Saturday, there are a few other big-time games to work with. Those games are:

  • Camping World Bowl: Iowa State (+3.5) vs. Notre Dame; 12 p.m.
  • Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl: Oklahoma (+13.5) vs. LSU; 4 p.m.
  • Playstation Fiesta Bowl: Clemson (-2) vs. Ohio State; 8 p.m.

So Saturday’s action kicks off with a team and a game Penn State might have liked to avoid. When it all begins, the disappointment will dissolve and the team’s mindset will be much the same as those who happen to be holding a betting ticket.

They just want to win.

Almost a month after the first PA online sportsbook began testing, a second one is about to get underway.

Three days of betting app testing start Monday

The Parx sports betting app begins its first of three days of testing today. The Monday session will run from 4 p.m. EST until midnight. Here is a full look at the testing schedule, which is overseen by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB):

  • Monday, June 24: 4 p.m.-midnight
  • Tuesday, June 25: 2 p.m.-midnight
  • Wednesday, June 26: Noon-midnight

Once Parx clears this testing period without issue, it will be clear to run around the clock with its new offering. As a reminder, if you want to bet on Parx’s new app, you need to be at least 21 years old and be located inside Pennsylvania state lines when you wager.

What to expect from Parx online sports betting

While the app is still not available to the public for a couple of hours, there are a few things we can already tell you about the Parx app.

Like PlaySugarHouse.com Pennsylvania, Parx is powered by European sports betting company Kambi. So, expect a similar feeling and navigation as you would on the SugarHouse app.

One thing that will give you a great sense of how the app will work is the Parx Betslip Builder page. The ticket builder launched as part of Parx’s PA retail sportsbook offering. It allows users to build their betting slip in advance, then head to the book’s kiosks or betting counter and scan a QR code to submit and print it.

Promotions include $10 sign up bet, $250 risk-free bet

If you want to take advantage of the offers from Parx, the best way to do that is to access the site via your browser or download the app onto your Android phone.

The Android download is an easy process where you go to pa.parxcasino.com and a button to download on Android will immediately pop up. Once you click that, the app will begin to download on your phone.

In order to set up an account with Parx, be prepared with personal info including your:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Last four of your Social Security number
  • Email address

The current promotions on offer are twofold:

The first is $10 free bet for all new sign-ups. There is no deposit required.

The second is a risk-free bet of up to $250 commiserate with your first deposit. Both of these are available without a promo code.

Parx Sportsbook deposit options

So far, it looks like Parx customers have several ways they can choose to get money online. The current list of deposit options is:

  • Parx play prepaid card
  • ACH/ e-check
  • Bank wire
  • Cash at the Parx cage
  • Check
  • PayNearMe

The sight is not forthcoming about withdrawal options, but that might just be a side effect of the testing period. Additionally, not all elements of the support functionality were up and running at the time of launch.

New features to enjoy from Parx

What immediately stands out about the Parx online sportsbook is a deep commitment to responsible gambling.

Sure, anyone can get themselves on the PGCB self-exclusion list. However, what Parx offers are a list of options to allow you to keep betting with major controls in place to ensure you are keeping things fun and not problematic:

  • Deposit limits
  • Wager limits
  • Time limits
  • Max bet limits
  • Reality check tool, which notifies you based on how long you are on the app

What is also a big draw for the app is the live betting interface. The current setup for in-game betting on Women’s World Cup includes a representation of the field as well as what action is taking place, kind of like a game cast interface. At the bottom of the screen, the odds automatically update on in-game wagers as the game progresses. Users can then approve those odds changes before placing a bet.

Rivers en route to sportsbook launch, too

The word on the street is the number of apps in PA won’t sit at two for long. Rivers Pittsburgh, sister casino to SugarHouse, plans to start testing its BetRivers sports betting app, in the very near future as well. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the app will test this week as well, but only for two days instead of the standard three.

There are no exact dates on when Rivers will start its three-day testing phase, but the casino has been expecting to launch at some point in June for several weeks now.

Rivers Pittsburgh did not obtain an interactive gaming license, so it will not offer PA online casino, but the BetRivers app is on the way and should be a near-exact replica of the PlaySugarHouse app the other Rush Street casino in PA is already offering.

DraftKings

When it comes to promos at Pennsylvania online sportsbooks, DraftKings is one of the most generous. So far in FY 2020/2021, the sportsbook doled out $16.8 million in promo credits, the second-most of any operator in the state.

Giving out freebies isn’t as easy as it seems. With twelve online sportsbooks available in PA, there is plenty of competition and an array of options for customers to choose from.

Even though sports betting in Pennsylvania is still in its infancy, there are some promos that bettors are already familiar with due to their popularity. DraftKings’ “Hammer the Over” promo and the “No Brainer bet” are likely crowned the most popular by DraftKings’ users. But the sportsbook also has had plenty of other promos like mystery profit boosts, 25% profit boost on any college basketball game and a regular refresh of sign-up offers.

Lexi Janson, director of sportsbook promotions at DraftKings, and her team are the “brains” behind the “No Brainer Bet” and DraftKings’ kingdom of promos.

Sights set on post-PAPSA USA

Janson, who hails from Melbourne, Australia, grew up with two older brothers and always loved sports. Sports betting is ubiquitous in Australia and when she reached the legal age, she started to consider it as a possible career.

Lexi Janson

When Janson attended the University of Melbourne, she worked at horse racing tracks for BetFair encouraging racegoers to sign-up. She studied economics and finance and developed a deeper understanding of how the betting exchanges worked.

Once she graduated, through her experience and network, she started working at Racing Victoria. As a strategic planner, Janson worked with bookmakers on betting structures and adapting the racing products to improve the user experience.

Janson always had ambitions to live in a different country. She took a role in the United Kingdom in 2014 with the British Horseracing Authority and then worked at Playtech BGT Sports, a sports betting tech provider.

While in London she attended various NFL games and her eyes started to wander stateside.

“The whole concept of sports betting really interests me. Once I saw the post-PAPSA being cleared in the United States, combined with my love of American sports, I had my sights set on the United States.”

A new world for sports betting

In 2019, she landed at DraftKings in New York. Janson answered questions from Playin Pennsylvania about her role as director of sportsbook promotions, football fans in different countries, the early stages of legalized sports betting in the states, and other features of the DraftKings app.

Before it was a career for you, you were a fan. Can you touch on some of the differences of fandom in Australia versus the United States?

Janson: The biggest difference is there’s a lot of teams in the same cities in Australia, but in the US, everyone in a city is crazy into the one team so it’s way more of a community. You can walk around a tailgate and people are high-fiving pumping each other up.

Australians love sport and gambling. We even have two public holidays for big sports events (like if Super Bowl Monday was a holiday), but it’s still a different feel in America.

Also, the people in the United States are way friendlier to opposing teams compared to soccer in Europe and other places. I watched a Titans fan celebrating beating the Cowboys at AT&T Stadium and expected people to hurl abuse but the worst anyone said to the guy was “Hey Titans, you ruined my day.”

What was it like to come to a country where sports betting outside of Las Vegas was just starting?

Janson: To come to the US from very mature sports betting markets has been interesting because you can take some of your knowledge of what works in those mature markets. But ultimately, the US is so different. Each state is different. We can have sports that customers love in Pennsylvania and certain promotions they enjoy but it won’t necessarily fit in a different state.

It’s an exciting time filled with testing and learning about what customers in each state like. You have to take customers on more of an educational path. A lot of them don’t understand some basic parts of sports betting like odds and point spreads. You can really see the customer base mature through the educational journey.

DraftKings sportsbook promos and info inside the app

DraftKings has a trove of information in the app. You can click on a game and it has lots of stats on each team and betting information. (Like ATS record/total points line record/point spread movement). Not every sportsbook offers that. Why has DraftKings prioritized this?

Janson: My team has customer service experience and that’s a big focus for us at DraftKings. Through making sure customers have as much information as possible, the product is easy to use. When we design promotions, we try to make it as easy as possible for people to get the information they need and understand what’s needed to make and complete their wager. DraftKings is very customer centric. Every product is designed around how we can make the best customer experience. We want to give them as much betting knowledge as possible.

What is the process that goes into coming up with a promotion?

Janson: We are very data driven and customer centric. We have a general idea of potential events and products we want to promote. Our team is very diverse and we all have sports we love and we open it up to the rest of the company to submit ideas. Then our team sits, brainstorms and bounces ideas off each other. We think about if the customer will understand it, we incorporate past learnings, do a lot of research, try things out and continue to learn.

“Hammer the Over” is a social promotion. Do they generally tend to have better success?

Janson: We are always trying to innovate and get customers talking about the product. It includes being relevant to a sporting event or doing something relevant to what’s topical in the news. Some of the socially-driven ones like “Hammer the Over” is something customers really like.

The most recent “Hammer the Over” promo was super popular with customers and it was hammered to zero in 48 hours. Sports betting is actually quite social by nature where everyone loves to share their wins with friends. “Hammer the Over” allows customers to help each other make the odds of winning better.

Live betting is a popular feature. DraftKings is the only sportsbook I’ve noticed that offers boosted live bets. Why?

Janson: In game and live betting is a massive part of sports. Having something you can continue to choose to wager on is important and we put a lot of effort making sure our live product and our promotions give customers something to continue to be interested in. It’s the game within a game. We have a really good live betting product and I want to continue to promote it.

What is it like to work at DraftKings?

Johnny Avello praised you and your team’s work. Being at a place like DraftKings as it breaks into sports betting across the country must be exciting for you. Can you give us insight on what it’s like to work there?

Janson: It’s awesome. I made the best decision ever when I came here. When I meet people and tell them I work here they say, “That’s so cool.” And it really is.

Everything is so exciting and new and we do have the liberty to try different things as long as we are learning from those things. We get to unleash our creativity and it’s so much fun. The team around me, not only just my direct team, is very creative and fun to be around. The overall culture of DraftKings attracts super smart people. Even our developers, I think they have superpowers. They deliver things so fast. It’s a great time to be here and super exciting. It’s only going to get better.

Eagles Draft Moves 2021

In a stunning turn of Friday afternoon events, @Jeff_McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that the Philadelphia Eagles have traded the No. 6 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 12 overall pick, the 123rd overall pick, and a 2022 first-round pick. (This report has since been confirmed my multiple sources.)

The move was set up by a previous swap that saw San Francisco trade up from their No. 12 pick to the No. 3 position with Miami. One of the future No. 1 picks acquired by the Dolphins in this deal was then promptly included as part of the package that allowed them to make the deal with the Eagles.

Eagles draft moves signify focus on future growth

The Eagles could now potentially hold three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL draft. That is, if Carson Wentz plays 75% of the offensive snaps in Indianapolis this year. That pick would be a second-rounder if he does not achieve this benchmark.

The Eagles were previously thought to be candidates to move up to the No. 3 pick themselves in order to draft a Quarterback, but according to Ian Rappaport (@RapSheet) of NFL Network, the team ultimately decided that, “Moving back and collecting a future 1st rounder was a better way to build the team.”

The top 12 picks now appear as follows:

What is to come of Philadelphia NFL futures odds?

The Eagles are now armed with a new head coach (former Colts OC Nick Sirianni), a back-up turned starting QB Jalen Hurts (with Wentz now officially out of the picture), and a lot of future draft capital.

It is unclear at the time of writing how the draft trade will affect Eagles futures odds for the upcoming season. The Eagles are currently +7000 or +8000 to win Super Bowl and +400 or +500 to win NFC East.

PA sports betting apps will likely respond to the draft moves with some NFL odds shifts soon. Expect those odds to move even more after the 2021 NFL Draft, which takes place April 29-May 1.
