Flyers Need to Heat Up

They need a win. The Philadelphia Flyers have lost three games in a row. Their combined margin of defeat in those contests is 12-5.

So it’s been a rough stretch for the Flyers, who are in the middle of the pack in the NHL’s Eastern Conference, sitting in fifth place with 34 points.

But there’s still a lot of hockey left on the schedule, with about seven weeks remaining in the season. So flickers of hope remain. The Flyers could still get hot and make a playoff run. Futures odds have them at fifth in the East Division, precisely where they are at now.

A turnaround is not impossible.

But first, they need a win.

That could happen tonight, when Philadelphia hosts the New York Rangers at 7 p.m. DraftKings has the Flyers at -106 on the moneyline with Philadelphia +1.5 priced at -286. The game’s total is set at 6.

The Flyers are hoping for a much better home result than Tuesday, when the team trailed 4-1 after the second intermission and heard boos from some of the fans in attendance, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Flyers GM recognized team’s roster problems

On Wednesday, Philadelphia GM Chuck Fletcher held a midseason press conference and addressed many of the team’s struggles. According to the Philly Sports Network, Fletcher admitted the team’s roster is not ideal right now.

“I think the makeup of our group is not right. I think that’s a fair comment. I think we have to address that to get the right mix,” said Fletcher.

But he also said it’s unlikely the team will make any major moves in the immediate future to fix things. So for better or worse, the change must come from within.

“We have a lot of confidence in our group,” Flyers center Claude Giroux told NBC Sports. “We still think we’re going to make the playoffs. We need to be a little bit more consistent in our game. It starts with me. You can’t play one good game and then one bad game and keep going like that. We need to put a few games together here.”

So a win tonight would be a start. And then maybe with a little luck, an opposite streak will begin. One that brings more victories and more optimism and far fewer questions about where the team is going.

Flyers longshots to make the playoffs

For now, there seems to be more pessimism than anything else. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Flyers at -340 to miss the NHL playoffs, while a playoff berth would pay out +230.

So oddsmakers aren’t expecting much from this team. But the season isn’t over just yet.

In time, everything will be decided on the ice. But about halfway through this season, the Flyers will need a major turnaround to make the season a success.

They need a spark. And some momentum.

And tonight, they just need a win.

Three Match 5 winners emerge as millionaires

The last Powerball drawing had three Match 5 winners. As a reminder, the winning numbers for Saturday, March 20 were 1 – 6 – 22 – 42 – 61 with a red Powerball of 4. Also the $1 Power Play multiplier was 3X.

Winners from Florida and Illinois matched all five white balls for the second-place prize of $1 million. However, the winner from Virginia matched all five white balls and added on the $1 optional Power Play multiplier boosting the prize to $2 million.

The winning ticket in VA was sold at a 7-Eleven located on 1125 Wilroy Road in Suffolk. The store receives a $10,000 bonus for selling the winner. According to the Virginia Lottery, the winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the prize.

Sweet 16 Promos at PA Sportsboooks

The bracket is busted.

No. 1 Illinois is gone. No. 2-seeded Ohio State and Iowa have been eliminated as well. The same goes for No. 3 seeds Texas and Kansas.

And yet, Villanova is still standing tall after all the wreckage, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz after the twister touched down.

The Wildcats have been overlooked after losing their senior point guard and team leader Collin Gillespie to an injury in early March. But their seasons continues Saturday against Baylor in a 5:15 game on CBS.

And over at DraftKings Sportsbook PA, new users can get 100-1 odds on Villanova-Baylor, or any other game for the remainder of the tournament. March Madness betting is in full force, and we will keep you posted with all the sweet Sweet 16 promos here.

Villanova is an underdog in Saturday’s showdown with No. 1 Baylor

DraftKings has the Wildcats as 6.5-point underdogs in Saturday’s game, with a moneyline price of +250. The game’s total is 139 points. But if that game doesn’t grab your attention, there are seven other Sweet 16 contests across the weekend.

Here’s a list of the other matchups with the point spreads according to DraftKings:

NCAA Sweet 16 Games Saturday:

  • No. 12 Oregon State (+6.5) vs. No. 8 Loyola Chicago; 2:40 pm
  • No. 15 Oral Roberts (+11.5) vs. No. 3 Arkansas; 7:25 p.m.
  • No. 11 Syracuse (+6) vs. No. 2 Houston; 9:55 p.m.

NCAA Sweet 16 Games Sunday:

  • No. 5 Creighton (+13.5) vs. No. 1 Gonzaga; 2:10 p.m.
  • No. 4 Florida State (+3) vs. No. 1 Michigan; 5 p.m.
  • No. 11 UCLA (+6.5) vs. No. 2 Alabama; 7:15 p.m.
  • No. 7 Oregon (+2.5) vs. No 6 USC; 9:45 p.m.

Futures odds for the tournament champion have also been updated now that there are only 16 teams remaining. Gonzaga is still the favorite at +155. Villanova is +3300 at DraftKings. And pricing is available on the rest of the field as well.

Sweet 16 promotions are live at Pennsylvania’s sportsbooks

In case a full weekend of basketball isn’t enough, PA sportsbooks are rolling out a healthy assortment of promotions too. In addition to the aforementioned DraftKings 100-1 odds promo, FOX Bet is giving away a free $10 bet for every day of college hoops in which you wager at least $10. Here are the details:

  • Opt in within the ‘Challenges’ window before placing a $10+ wager (parlays are included) on a qualifying game each day on the NCAA Men’s Tournament
  • Qualifying wagers must be placed -200 minimum odds (-200 on each parlay leg)
  • $10 Free Bet will be credited instantly and is ONLY available for use on that same day (expires 11:59 p.m.)
  • Players can only take advantage ONCE per day

And FanDuel is giving new users 30-1 odds on any team to win its Sweet 16 game with the exception of the Loyola Chicago-Oregon State matchup. Find more info on the app.

Also, BetMGM Sportsbook is helping curb bad beats with its new “Buzzer-Beater Insurance.” Bettors can get a refund up to $20 if a bet loses because of a shot made in the final five seconds of the game.

Can the underdogs keep it going? Or will the chalk prevail?

It all starts Saturday afternoon. After an opening weekend that decimated the bracket’s top teams, the underdogs continue their uphill climb in the Sweet 16.

And Villanova is right in the middle of it. The Wildcats are often among the tournament’s favorites, but without their star point guard, this team seems a little different.

Perhaps they are survivors more than anything else, a collective group trying to overcome whatever expectations and obstacles are tossed in front of them.

So far, so good.

The tornado has touched down and the team is still standing.

The journey continues

Three Match 5 Winners from NY, MI, and SC

Just because no one hit the big jackpot for the last drawing does not mean that there weren’t any big winners. In fact, nationwide, three lottery tickets won $1 million on St. Patrick’s Day.

Just as a reminder, the winning numbers were 34 – 38 – 42 – 61 – 62 with a red Powerball of 19. These winning tickets from NY, MI and SC matched all five white balls but missed matching the Powerball number to win the whole jackpot.

  • New York: The winning ticket was sold at a Speedway gas station located on 1810 Maple Rd. in Amherst.
  • South Carolina: Continuing the theme, the lucky ticket was sold at another Speedway gas station on 421 William Hilton Pkwy. in Hilton Head.
  • Michigan: Last but not least, the winner in the Wolverine State purchased the lottery ticket online through the MI Lottery.

Online lottery tickets for sale

However, you don’t need to be in Michigan to buy online lottery tickets. For Pennsylvanians, the PA online lottery also offers tickets to draw games as well. Moreover, if you are a new player, you can receive a welcome bonus for signing-up and making a real-money deposit.

Other states that also allow online lottery sales are:

  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

In Pennsylvania, you must be 18 years or older to play the lottery. Please play responsibly.

$1 million RI ticket unclaimed?

The Rhode Island Lottery appealed to the public to check for Mega Millions tickets. Apparently, a winning $1 million ticket may have expired on St. Patrick’s Day.

Previously, a Quick Pick ticket was sold at Season’s Corner Market located on 780 Great Rd. in North Smithfield on St. Patrick’s Day 2020. Those winning numbers were 20 – 27 – 28 – 58 – 59 with a gold Mega Ball of 25.

As of now, there is no update on whether the winner stepped forward to claim the prize. However, St. Patrick’s Day 2021 has now come and gone.

Never lose lottery tickets again by buying online

Yet, there is a way to ensure you never lose a lottery ticket again or forget to claim a prize. The PA online lottery here in the Keystone State offers online tickets that is kept safe and secure in your player’s account.

  • New York

Remember that each state may have different requirements for online lottery ticket purchases. Please play responsibly.

NCAA Tournament Betting at PA Sportsbooks

For the first time ever, Pennsylvanians can wager on March Madness on PA sports betting apps. Online sportsbooks in the state went live in PA in the summer of 2019 but missed out the NCAA Tournament since it was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Now, the NCAA is back and there are more options than ever when it comes to betting in PA.

Here’s the game plan on where to bet on March Madness in Pennsylvania.

2021 March Madness schedule

  • First Four — 4 p.m. start on Thursday, March 18
  • First round — 12 p.m. start on Friday, March 19, and Saturday, March 20

In Pennsylvania, legal sportsbooks are not able to offer betting markets on player props.

In New Jersey, legal sportsbooks can’t offer betting markets on any college sport or game that takes place in New Jersey. Also, while you are physically located in New Jersey, you can not bet on any New Jersey college team regardless of where the game takes place.

For example, the 2021 NCAA tourney is in Indianapolis. You can not bet on Rutgers on any legal, regulated sportsbook app while physically located in New Jersey.

Idaho pulls out of the Powerball lottery

Right now, Powerball is sold in 45 states. Also, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands allow Powerball sales. In fact, the Powerball lottery is so popular that the game is expanding overseas. Specifically, the Powerball lottery plans on expanding to Australia and Britain.

Unfortunately, Idaho state law only allows ticket sales to lotteries played only in the US and Canada. Now, a proposed ID bill in the House of Representatives is attempting to remedy this issue.

Yet, the ID State Affairs Committee opted to vote 10-4 to decline allowing Powerball to continue sales in the Gem State. However, for now at least, ID residents can continue to play Powerball with the ID Lottery still determining alternatives.

Finally, once Idaho stops the sale of Powerball, the Gem State will join Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah as the only US states that do not participate.

Online Powerball tickets for sale

Despite the news of Idaho opting out of Powerball, there are still plenty of sales in the popular draw lottery game. Even more, here in Pennsylvania, you can purchase online Powerball tickets through the PA online lottery.

Other states also allow online Powerball tickets as well:

  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Virginia

Whether buying online tickets or through a physical lottery retailer, please play responsibly.

Possible PA Bets for NCAA Midwest Region

It’s the Year of the Dragon. Well, at least as far as March Madness is concerned.

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams from Philadelphia’s Drexel University have qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

The women’s team plays Monday at noon against Georgia in the Alamo Region of the women’s NCAA Tournament.

And the men’s team faces Illinois, one of the tournament’s top teams at 1:15 pm Friday. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Dragons as a 22.5-point underdog in the contest, but for schools like Drexel, it’s not always about winning. It’s pretty exciting just to be somewhere in the dance.

So although it’s unlikely that the Dragons will win the Midwest Region (FanDuel Sportsbook has those odds at 100-1), right now they’re in the thick of it. And they’re certain to savor their shining moments.

In this installment of Playin Pennsylvania’s Clutch 3, we’ll preview Drexel’s Midwest region, along with a player, team, and game to watch.

Maybe the Dragons’ opponent Illinois will make it all the way through. But March always seems to bring a little madness, so there’s bound to be excitement somewhere.

Team to watch: No. 3 West Virginia

Pennsylvania’s neighbor West Virginia has bounced around near the top ten of the AP poll all season. But the Mountaineers have been somewhat inconsistent, finishing 5-7 against the country’s top 25 teams.

The NCAA Tournament gives West Virginia a chance to put a run together and head coach Bob Huggins certainly has experience working in his favor. Perhaps because of that, the Mountaineers are only +750 to make the Final Four. Crazier things have certainly happened.

Player to Watch: Cade Cunningham, G, Oklahoma State

Cunningham could be the No. 1 overall pick in the next NBA Draft. He’s averaging over 20 points per game for the Cowboys and recently carried them to a Big 12 Conference title.

Oklahoma State has some depth around him, but Cunningham will need a stellar tournament if the Cowboys are going to make a run. FanDuel has them at +600 to make the Final Four. No. 4 Oklahoma State starts the tournament with a first-round game against No. 13 Liberty Friday at 6:25 p.m.

Game to Watch: No. 7 Rutgers at No. 10 Clemson

Rutgers is a 10 seed in the team’s first-round game against No. 7 Clemson, but the Scarlet Knights are the favorite as far as PA sportsbooks are concerned. FanDuel has Rutgers as a 1.5-point favorite in the game, which will be broadcast at 9:20 p.m. Friday on TBS.

The Scarlet Knights will likely draw a lot of action in PA, especially since you’re not allowed to bet in-state college teams like Rutgers at NJ sportsbooks. Rutgers is 24-1 to make the Final Four.

A look at East and West Region bets

The East and West regions may not be quite as interesting to Pennsylvania bettors without a home-state team in those brackets, but here’s a quick look at some possible bets for those as well to get you fully prepared for the tournament action.

East Region

Team to Watch: No. 11 Michigan State

The Spartans will start the tournament with a play-in game against UCLA and a great promotion from FanDuel that has their point spread at +88.5 at press time. But Michigan State could be able to make some noise beyond that. BYU or UNC Greensboro would loom in a second-round game and the Spartans might even be favored in that contest.

In addition to an experienced coach in Tom Izzo, Michigan State has played some tough competition all season and owns wins against Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio State. The Spartans are 55-1 to make the Final Four.

Player to Watch:  Cameron Thomas, G, LSU

Thomas can light up the scoreboard. The freshman guard averages 22.6 points per game for the Tigers and is one of four players who average double figures for LSU. The Tigers made it to the SEC Tournament final and only lost by one point to the No. 2 seed in the East Region, Alabama.

Oddsmakers expect a close game in the first round for LSU, installing them as a 1.5-point favorite in the matchup with St. Bonaventure. That game tips off at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Game to Watch: No. 7 UCONN vs. No. 10 Maryland

This contest could be another close one if oddsmakers are correct. Connecticut is a three-point favorite at press time according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The Huskies have been playing well as of late, led by guard James Bouknight, who averages 19 points per game.

Maryland will counter with the guard tandem of Eric Ayala and Aaron Wiggins, who both average above 14 points per game. The Terrapins will tip off their game with UCONN at 7:10 p.m. on Saturday.

West Region

Team to Watch: No. 13 Ohio

If you’re looking for an underdog that may have a little bit of life, the Ohio Bobcats have been getting a lot of love from the experts. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas predicted them to win their first-round game against Virginia, who had to withdraw from the ACC Tournament because of COVID issues and could have a few concerns that still remain.

The Bobcats are led by junior guard Jason Preston, who figures to be an NBA draft pick in the near future. They also nearly beat No. 1 seed Illinois in a road game earlier this season. Ohio is a 7-point underdog in the game Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. with a moneyline price of +290 at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Player to Watch: Luka Garza, C, Iowa

Garza, a 6-foot, 11-inch center, is a matchup nightmare. He averages 23.7 points per game and the Hawkeyes have a lot of good three-point shooters around him, making the team pretty tough to defend. No. 2 Iowa is a 14.5-point favorite in its first round game with No. 15 Grand Canyon, which tips off at 6:25 p.m. on Saturday. The Hawkeyes are +350 to make the Final Four.

Game to Watch: Drake vs. Wichita State, No. 11 Play-In Game

One of the first games in the entire tournament could be a doozy. Drake and Wichita State face off in the First Four at 6:27 p.m. Thursday on TBS. FanDuel Sportsbook has Drake favored by a single point in the matchup of two Midwest teams. Both teams are -108 0n the moneyline and the game’s total is set at 140.5 points. If you’re looking for a good game to get your tournament sweat started on Thursday night, this could be it.

Let the NCAA tournament games begin (finally)

So there you have it. Philadelphia’s Drexel Dragons will take the court in the Midwest Region, but that’s only the beginning of what will be a jam-packed weekend of NCAA Tournament action.

We’ve waited two long years for it.

But thankfully, the games are about to begin.
